What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
I want to ask you in your opinion, how would Benny "Kid" Paret's career play out if he had not died from the sustain injuries by Emile Griffith in their third match?

If he had'nt died then he would have lived
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
If he hadn't died less people would be familiar with his name.
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
You tell me, he had lost 5 of his last 7 bouts.
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
I think Paret was at the end of his career - unlikely he would have been champ again - the thing about the fight that always disturbed me was that the ref took so much heat for his inaction - Paret was known for playing opossum, and even in this fight early on, he laid on the ropes looking like a beaten fighter when he suddenly exploded and staggered Griffith - I suspect that when the tradegy occur the ref wasn't sure if Paret was trying to set up Griffith again or not and waited (until it was too late).scorpio83 wrote:I want to ask you in your opinion, how would Benny "Kid" Paret's career play out if he had not died from the sustain injuries by Emile Griffith in their third match?
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
Never knew he left behind a two year old son and that his wife was with child again - more tragedy. - In a different article, I didn't post, stated that an autopsy found no evidence of brain damage before the fight (I guess they can determine that).

Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
Eventually the scrutiny of an outcome such as this, (which is inevitable in any life activity, and snowflakes of the world are always profoundly amazed to find that we are mortal, and always go hyperactively hysterical) ..was going to get the attention of the public....and it all would have been roughly the same story just different names.
Life always has one outcome.....namely el morte' ......and of course if we outlaw all risky activity, then more of us will die of boredom. Which will of course start the ball rolling in the other direction. Snowflakes will then demand an investigation into boredom and excitedly report to us, it's various and insidious dangers.

Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
My question is how long would Benny "Kid" Paret's career last had he not died? By his early thirties or mid-thirties?
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
I would assume by surviving that fight, his career would have ended due to the injuries.
If this fight never took place.....I suppose he could have gone on into his mid thirties.
Or until the game got the better of him in some other way.
He was no shrinking violet.....so he wasn't leaving the sport anytime soon on his own volition.

I assume snowflakes are all the Hilary voters BuzzBox??? Or anyone who believes health and safety regs need to have teeth, and Climate Change is a concern???BoxBuzz wrote:snowflakes of the world are always profoundly amazed to find that we are mortal, and always go hyperactively hysterical ... if we outlaw all risky activity, then more of us will die of boredom ... Or maybe anyone who doesn't have the stomach to watch a helpless man get beaten to death by 28 unanswered punches -- including 13 straight right uppercuts at one point. All the while Paret was completely defenseless, out on his feet, and not making the slightest effort to avoid punches or to punch back.. I don't like to be critical of referees, but that was the worst job of refereeing I've ever seen.. The primary concern of referees should be the health and safety of the boxers -- that way there are fewer tragedies like this.
BTW, there's a lot of non-boring activities that aren't real risky.. Reading novels, going to the movies, working out, watching TV, conversations with interesting people, going out to dinner, dancing with pretty girls, playing chess, painting, sculpting, woodworking, other arts and crafts of various kinds..
If you like dangerous activities like auto racing, bull riding, deep sea diving, hang gliding, paragliding, cliff diving, ski jumping, pipeline snowboarding, hot air ballooning, boxing, MMA and the like, you need to know exactly what you’re doing and not go beyond your level of expertise.. The people who provide venues for such activities need adhere to health and safety regulations and provide as safe an environment as possible.
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
Benny Paret was already at the end of his career, and had already accomplished his greatest feats. Prior to the fatal Emile Griffith bout he took a brutal beating from Gene Fullmer as well. Hindsights 20/20 of course, but he should've been retired before the 3rd Griffith bout. Just one of those tragic things that's unfortunately bound to happen sometimes with a sport like Boxing.
Officials definitely became more safety conscious after this bout though it was still a while before it got to the way it is today. The amount of unanswered punches Paret took at the end of this fight without the referee intervening was absolutely ridiculous. You'd never see anything like that now, and it's a good damn thing too because nobody would want to.

Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
Was this fight the beginning of the end of the turn-buckle, or did that awareness come later? Was there a claim, at the time, that Paret got hung-up on the turn-buckle, or am I thinking of a different fight.

He's going to accuse you of making assumptions about his 2nd generation Russian wife soon. But those assumptions (that you haven't made) are wrong. All of them. But he doesn't know what they are. He's just assuming.
Then he'll tell you that he's a former Hilary Clinton fan but he's really not but he is. But he's not. Unless he's trying to prove a point.
Because he can't keep up with his various lies, bless him.

I'm not condoning that ref's in competence.... don't be a lame brain. You are better than that ....I' m sure of it.Kalan wrote:I assume snowflakes are all the Hilary voters BuzzBox??? You apparently live in a bubble. And you may well never understand "the dignity of risk". I'm somewhat surprised at your attitude. And a bad referee is no worse than placing your fate in the guy coming at you in the opposite lane, you HOPE he stays on his side of the road, and behaves, and acts responsibly. But since that is such a risk, perhaps cars are a bit "over the top" and we should stop their manufacturing ASAP. HOW MANY MORE LIVES must we sacrifice to the automobile?
That ref is like the guy coming at you the next time your in a car. Let's hope all future drivers and refs, act responsibly.
Don't be a snowflake....you'll end up melting.
Re: What if Benny "Kid" Paret didn't die?
You’re playing ignorant and dumb again Buzzbox. You know I haven’t led a sheltered life as you have. I’ve engaged in many risky sports and activities and you have not. Once I was in a rough neighborhood and witnessed a gang of thugs beating a man viciously. I was alone and unarmed, but without giving it a thought I dove into the fray and saved the man. That wrecked my clothes and was risky business. A friend of mine—who was an undefeated professional Heavyweight at the time—was shot dead the previous year when he intervened in a Hell’s Angels altercation. I’ve taken major risks in my life when they were warranted. A defenseless boxer taking dozens of unanswered punches ISN’T acceptable.BoxBuzz wrote:I'm not condoning that ref's in competence.... don't be a lame brain. If a guy coming your way in the opposite lane is your definition of risk, you truly live in a bubble. That is an extremely low risk. There’s a much bigger risk of you getting cancer from your crappy diet if you eat like the average American. I remember Richard Nixon bragging in a speech that he lived in San Clemente within 20 miles of a nuclear power plant—and that he had absolutely no concern about that. Whoopdee Doo Dicky ... the man of steel. A regular BuzzBox.
