Does Golovkin have any fans in South Korea?
Considering GGG is half Korean through his mother, does he have any fans out there? He should probably go on a press tour out there sometime or even fight there maybe. Millions of fans to sell merchandise to and watch his fights if he played his hand right.

But he's half North Korean, and South Koreans hate North Korea.

I think a person from this forum said that boxing isn't as big as it used to be in Korea, and that its fanbase has been largely taken over by MMA, so i really doubt he'd be famous over there. He might have a few people there who knows who he is because they know boxing, but that's probably it.

Of course he has fans there... But that's not where his fan base IS... Most of his fights are in the USA for the past few years -- so he has a growing fan base here.

Why do you people care so much about upping fighters' race? Golovkin has a solid fanbase, but it doesn't translate into PPV buys.
Re: Does Golovkin have any fans in South Korea?
Not really no. South Koreans tend to only get patriotic with sportsmen and women who are 100% South Korean in sports they like. Baseball players and soccer players rule the roost. For women Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kim Yuna is like royalty.
Boxing ain't that popular its never really recovered from the deaths of Kim Duk-koo and Choi Yo-sam. MMA is bigger there but most South Koreans won't care about say Benson Henderson who is mixed. It's 100% South Koreans like Stun Gun and Korean Zombie who are popular.
Most Koreans will have never heard of GGG. Even the people who have won't care as they won't see him as Korean.

I remember Injin Chi. He was pretty good. His first fight with Michael Brodie was a good little fight.

The GGG-Canelo Fight will pull more PPV's then any fight in the History of Boxing -- other than the massive, thudding dud, May-Pac.Mexi-Box wrote:Why do you people care so much about upping fighters' race? Golovkin has a solid fanbase, but it doesn't translate into PPV buys.

MBC Sports (or KBS Sports can't remember which) have shown documentaries on GGG and he does get some media attention in South Korea, so he certainly has fans there. Hard to say how many, but he's certainly not totally ignored

He was one of the toughest I've ever seen. He gave Morales hell!
