Kirkland Laing winning the Euro title against Antoine Fernandez at Wembley.

I was living in Woking, Surrey, working for Lotus Software (they were still the biggest software company then as Windows was in its infancy) in Staines and going to fights several times a year.

I took several mates (casuals in todays parlance

) and we saw Henry Maske make his debut. Lennox Lewis also fought that night but I was a Laing fan so had to choose - I had been to Lewis's debut a year before.

The Contender Challenge: UK vs USA @ Newcastle Arena.

A "Ryder Cup" of boxing it was attempting to be, but it was an absolute shit-show. Meandered down to Ringside by about 11pm without any one coming close to questioning why I was there. On the plus side I did get to be around Sugar Ray Leonard and Teddy Atlas, albeit too pissed up and generally f--ked off about the event to really say anything.

As the night trundled on at a ridiculously slow pace, about 1am with a few fights still to go on the card, we decided the beer, blow and bitches at a nearby club were a far more enticing option.

I was there. An absolutely blathered Londonirish bought me a pint. I don't think he's drank since. Had a great chat with Dom Negus, Teddy Atlas and was with Nigel Wright before and after his fight. I also upset Peter Manfredo! I told him Calzaghe was no joke and he stormed off, it was the week before the fight.

I was at that one as well, in the aldstadt for three days with all the York and Doncaster lads. And Issac Lowe put in an appearance in an Irish bar all day the Friday. Boring fight but one of the most pleasing. The big lad did the business.

Henry Wharton v Kenny "The Shotgun" Schaefer! Kenny used our amateur gym to train and I got to know the old shotgun, then fight night, I was asked to carry Henry's flag into the ring. Kenny gave me a mucky look, I'm sure I unsettled him and that's why he was unconscious in about a minute.

I took my lass to Joshua v Leo and I dragged her along to the Copperbox a few weeks ago for Walsh v Davis. For the Walsh/Davis fight, we watched most of the undercard and the two fights that were on after the main event. She must love me.

In all my years going to boxing events that's one thing I've never done (stay after the main event). Most of the time I forget there's more to come and I'm desperate to get to the boozer for a decent pint! Snidey beer in plastic tumblers blows massive cock!

Lucky enough (and old enough) to have gone to Lewis/Holyfield 1 and 2.

First one in New York, had a blinding time and thought the decision was a formality on the night, remember walking out and feeling totally flat, went on to have a few too many in a New York bar and work up in the hotel foyer about 0600 the following morning.

Rang the missus back in Blighty and she said everyone at home thought it was a robbery and they were already talking about a rematch in Vegas later that year. I had not heard any of this as was drinking myself into oblivion. I remember saying to her that's a bloody shame but we can't afford for me to go out there as well and to my delight she said stuff that your going, I knew from that moment she was the girl for me.

Vegas was not straightforward either, we booked with the same guy/firm we had gone with to the first fight and low and behold he did a runner with the money of about 180 people, long story short he got caught and went to prison, got 18 months but not sure how much he served.

We only found this out on the Wednesday before the fight we had been ringing for updates on where our tickets were and kept getting told in the post etc and they finally owned up so to speak on the Wednesday. I thought that was it and my adventure to Vegas to see Lewis win the title was gone but up pops the Mrs again, gets out the old boxing news editions from the weeks before the fight and rings up an agency that was advertising a package trip to the fight, lo and behold they had four places left on a plane going out Friday with tickets to the fight included plus a hotel on the strip (Imperial Palace), she borrowed the money from her mum and booked me and my mate on the flight. We did not get into Vegas until about 2300 Friday night if memory serves but we had a few beers a walk around and then heads down for the morning. We had a blinding time on the Saturday because we had already booked a Grand Canyon trip for 0830 local time that morning and that was already paid for so we did that, flew back from the canyon early afternoon, wash and brush up and off to the arena. Lennox did the business and the rest is history.

Still my greatest memories from boxing are these two trips, would love to do it again one day.
