Will Kovalev get DQ'ed this time ?

Post by boxing_rocks »

Ward and his team definitely succeeded in getting under Kovalev's skin. The question is if it is good for them or not.

Kovalev clearly hates Ward. Today, he rushed from the presser right after his speech skipping a face-off. Duva thinks that it is good that Kovalev is angry and that he wasn't angry and was too respectful before the first fight.

Can he be too angry? Can he punch Ward tomorrow during the weigh-in and get arrested? Can he punch Ward who is taking a knee, punch after a bell or foul otherwise making disqualification an option for a ref? What do you think?

It's possible, but the chances are slim.

Kovalev is a grown up professional boxer, not a little kid. Of course a DQ is always a possibility in any fight, but I don't think the chances are really worth mentioning.

Abraham and Uzcategui are also grown up professional boxers. So is Golovkin who punched Lemieux when he was taking a knee and Gassiev who punched Thomas after the bell. When you are too angry, it is easier to make mistakes like that.

Uzcategui didn't lose his temper and commit a foul out of anger, it was truly an accidental foul. He was in mid-combination when the bell rang. Abraham on the other hand may have been a touch frustrated.

Touche, and good examples. I do still believe Kovalev will remain composed, but anything is possible! :TU:

I am also weary about Kovalev going off the rails in this one. I can just see Ward taking a Andre Dirrell dive if a punch goes low or late and this turning into a debacle. Ward is definitely going out of his way to get him angry too so he knows exactly what he's doing.

I personally think that the knockdown killed Kovalev in the first one. After knocking Ward down, he went for the knockout for the next two rounds and that was a mistake. He lost all of his energy and strength and it was a rookie mistake to make against a seasoned pro. The funny thing is that I think that he'd make the same mistake tomorrow again if it presents itself. He hates Ward so much that it's going to end up hurting him in the end.

Kovalev isn't a real American, I don't think he will break rules on purpose.

Speaking about Kovalev being an American, many articles refer to him as "The Russian". That is how he is perceived by most, regardless of him having a green card or an American passport. He definitely kept his Russian citizenship anyway.

If Ward is owning Sergey by round 6, clearly outboxing him, I could see Kovalev getting desperate and starting to hit under the belt or intentionally head-butting. But I'm thinking it should be a close fight with Ward winning by 3-4 rounds.

Well, Kovalev looked composed and in a good mood during the weigh-in. Ward was talking to him probably trying to provoke, and Hunter was ready to jump in, but Kova just ignored the Son of Judges. War, Sergey !

Even when Pascal pissed him off, Kovalev was composed. Trash talk doesn't affect him, but I do also think he crucified Pascal. Everyone talks about Ward's adjustments, but Kovalev is known to adjust. He adjusted to Boone, gave him a beating, and then adjust to give an even worse beating to Pascal, practically crucifying him in the process. I would be scared if I were Ward because Kovalev is a dangerous man in that ring.

Ward is scared. All that talk including the JDJ story is because they feel insecure.

I think Ward's strategy is to make Kovalev angry enough to fight on emotion instead of sticking with a logical game plan that will play out effectively over 12 rounds. I can think of 2 bouts where that strategy worked and caused otherwise smart fighters to fight stupid fights that were lacking a logical game plan: Mayweather-Corrales and Hopkins-Trinidad. Both Chico and Tito fought very stupid fights, wasted a lot of energy and both were stopped in the later rounds. I'm not saying Ward could stop Kovalev but if he can get him tired by later rounds he can win a more clearcut decision.

There's a video with Ward reacting to Kovalev's early leave of the press conference where he's clearly scared.

I would be worried too if i was him.

He knows Kovalev has life-ending power; Kovalev made the gullible mistake of leaving it in the hands of the judges last time; now he realizes he can't do that anymore, and comes to knock him spark out.

So if the going gets too rough, Ward might try to get himself out of there by intentionally fouling and hoping for a Kovalev retaliation.

Intentional fouling is Ward's normal tactics against good opposition. Are you saying he will take it on the next level?

I've never witnessed so much pissing and moaning about what could happen to allow Ward to win. I think Ward will win legitimately, but don't sit around trying to dream up a scenario where he loses unfairly or illegally. Some of you are pathetic the way you go on and on trying to predict what Ward will do to win, and no matter what happens you will give no credit.

I'm ready to give full credit to Kovalev if he wins. Split, UD, KO, doesn't matter. If he wins, thumbs up for him, as he is a great fighter. I just happen to think Ward is better skilled, and the better ring IQ.

The ones who are pathetic are the tiny minority who think that Ward actually won. Them saying that the majority is whining sounds similar to a thief who stole something and asks an owner to not whine about the loss.

Hear hear, the anti-Ward sentiment is way OTT on this forum
