Paddy Barnes vs Silvio Olteanu

Post by handsofstone »

Barnes tops the bill and fights for his first pro title in his 3rd fight this Saturday against former European champ Olteanu, I remember Olteanu coming over here to fight Butler a couple of years back and was stopped, I mind him being tough though and he took his lumps, he also lost a SD to Daiki Kameda in a world title fight a few years ago, I was looking through his record and he seems well on the slide, lost 5 of his last 7, seems he's there for the taking as fodder for Barnes

Still haven't been overly impressed with Barnes yet, he's a tidy boxer, got a lot in his arsenal but his lack of a power and strength will cause problems when he steps up, I think he might have turned pro one Olympics too late, he's 30 now and who knows if he can change his style at this stage

This is a good test to see if he can break an opponent down if he hasn't got a dig, this fight is scheduled for 10 so it gives Barnes plenty of time to soften Olteanu up although getting 10 rounds under his belt is always a good thing, Barnes seemed a bit over eager in his first 2 fights so maybe this time he'll settle a lot quicker knowing he's got 10 rounds

Not a bad undercard either TBF, Evans/Ormond and Carroll/Quigley look decent and there's some other talented lads on the card

I'd go 98 92 Barnes. Easily take care of the majority and maybe gas a little in last 2 :bag:

I thought Olteanu won 96-94, I thought he was the busier the second half of the fight, threw the harder scoring shots, he hurt Barnes a few times and Paddy really struggled with the pace, I like Barnes he seems like a top lad and his amateur credentials are legendary but as a pro ive yet to be impressed, even the little things i'd liked in his first couple of fights weren't on show tonight, he started off the first few rounds jabbing well then just stopped, looked tired and was reduced to showing only nice little flurries, he looked dogged as fvck the last 5 rounds

Havn't seen the fight yet, but I've noticed several cards for Olteanu, some by several points.

Is Barnes another Tom Stalker?

Yeah, lacks the power needed to fight at the higher levels and lacks the stamina to really make a mark on the fringes.

He looks like the guy they are targeting

Potentially the weakest champion, but it'll be interesting to see how long it is before Shiming loses that title. No one has a clue who he's defending the title against, was supposed to be in July with Chinese papers reporting "against a Japanese foe", but the Japanese options in the WBO rankings (Kogawa, Ishida and Igarashi) won't be available for the date, and apparently Shiming's suffered some minor injury anyway...

Still...Shiming has better stamina and will fight at distance to take a decision win IMO.

Funnily enough when I was watching it, I kept thinking about his old amateur rival Shiming, like Barnes he struggled pretty much from the start as well but Zou always had a great engine to slug it out and eek out wins with his busy if wreckless style, Barnes doesn't look like he has a great engine and was forced back a fair few few times

Shiming seemed to take his hits in exchanges but Barnes was getting bullied a lot, he seems very much like Stalker :TU:

I didn't score it as attentively as I usually do, but I felt like Olteanu won the entire 2nd half of the fight, and he won at least 1 of the first 5 rounds. I'm pretty sure my card would've had him ahead if I'd scored it proper.

Wasn't impressed by Barnes, certainly not for someone being touted in the build up as fighting for a world title in a few fights. Barry Jones in commentary seemed won over by a few of Barnes' flurries exhibiting fast combination punching but they didn't appear to carry much dig to me. Olteanu looked the harder puncher throughout and I had him taking it by a couple of rounds.
