The Ward Irony
The Ward Irony
I don't have too strong an opinion either way on Ward and his most recent fight with Kovalev. I thought the fight was close and there were some blows that could be considered low, especially the last one. But, nothing I haven't seen before, but in reading the posts of fans both before and after this fight, I was struck by something...
I find it ironic that the general consensus is that Andre Ward can't bring home big, big money in the ring even though his accomplishments in the ring are first rate. Everyone in the world seems to hate him, and tons of boxing fans simply can't wait for him to lose. I seem to recall a guy recently who turned that dynamic into a lot of..."Money".
He's an excellent fighter, but maybe those that hate him so much can take solace in the fact that his business and PR instincts are non existent; he'll retire wealthy, but his failure to cultivate the proper persona to match his ring style is literally costing him tens of millions.
I know people will say they will never watch him and have even gone so far as to banish themselves from boxing fandom due to this guy, but I'll be interested to see what happens when another KO machine gets a crack at him, will people show up to see somebody finally deliver the KO they are dying to see?? Probably not, but only because Ward doesn't know how to fan those flames of hatred and use them to line his pockets...

Re: The Ward Irony
Ward deserves to be despised, because of his dirty tactics. He is a grand-master of boxing, that is evident, but he use a lot of low-blows, head-buts, clinching, wrestling, holding....Honestly, I am fed up of him....And, yes, he is better than Kovalev, but Beterbiev and Gvozdyk are coming....

I agree,Interesting fights.ValMar wrote:And, yes, he is better than Kovalev, but Beterbiev and Gvozdyk are coming....

Bull. Las Vegas "judges" notwithstanding Kovalev handily won the first fight - and Las Vegas "referee" notwithstanding he won the second fight as well, because Ward would have been repeatedly warned and points deducted and then disqualified by an honest referee.
Re: The Ward Irony
STFU you cry baby little twat. Kovalev was hurt by several body shots and showed he had quit in him when Ward really brought on the heat. Kovalev was looking for a way out of the innevitable beating he was about to get if Weeks let the fight continue.x2x wrote:ValMar wrote:Ward deserves to be despised, because of his dirty tactics. Re: The Ward Irony
The real irony is that he was looking good in the final round, and could have scored the best win the sport has seen since Marquez knocked out the pacman.
Instead he got dirty and ended up with a boat load of controversy and the prospect of the result being changed to an NC on appeal.

No he wasn't looking good until he started landing the low blows. Up until then he was looking like manure. I didn't think K looked that sharp either, but he was definitely ahead on any legit card, and even one of the on-the-payroll Las Vegas judges had him way ahead. A NC would not be fair either. The fight should be changed to a DQ win for Kovalev. Of course the appeal goes where? To the same mobsters who run boxing and the drug test racket and the alphabets in Las Vegas, Nevada, so no doubt they'll turn it down and say what the jerk above says, "low blows what low blows we didn't see no low blows. We din see no stinkin low blows!" (with thanks to Alfonso Bedoya for paraphrasing his famous line!)
Re: The Ward Irony
Exactly. Wards face was swollen and ward did more damage with his constant low blows round per round than with his best punch landed in the 8
Re: The Ward Irony
His s.o.g gimmick is blasphemous and hes a weirdo....he fights once a year...he stinks the place out usually...yes he is a great boxer...any man who can do what he did to froch is....and yes he has the all american good guy family life....jas80s wrote:I don't have too strong an opinion either way on Ward and his most recent fight with Kovalev. But trust me its his horrible s.o.g gimmick that turns people off and corporations too

People know Ward is a criminal... And he works with other criminals.jas80s wrote:I don't have too strong an opinion either way on Ward and his most recent fight with Kovalev. A boxers face being swollen just means he bruises easily.. doesn't mean he's taken a lot of damageJip wrote:Exactly. Wards face was swollen and ward did more damage with his constant low blows round per round than with his best punch landed in the 8
Re: The Ward Irony
My goodness you guys got a nice little sewing circle in here! All we're missing is 4 large coffees and the value size metamucil.
Its the gift that keeps on giving, you guys biting the big one again. Guess what? Result ain't changing. You can pray it does but it isn't. Be thankful it got stopped when it did, that loud mouth douche was unraveling clear as day. He was broken down. So not once but twice the chumps got burned riding the bandwagon. Good, well deserved.

Re: The Ward Irony
Theres a big difference between hate and wanting someone to lose (like with money, hamed, eubank snr) and indifference which is what ward gets

Many people would be glad, as having such a dirty fighter as p4p #1 even temporarily is deplorable.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Very true, if he never fought again nobody would care.Bricks wrote:Theres a big difference between hate and wanting someone to lose (like with money, hamed, eubank snr) and indifference which is what ward gets

Roberto Duran disagrees.not that I think ward is p4p.ive seen them all fight recently and he's not as good as Crawford or Spence.boxing_rocks wrote:Many people would be glad, as having such a dirty fighter as p4p #1 even temporarily is deplorable.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Very true, if he never fought again nobody would care.Bricks wrote:Theres a big difference between hate and wanting someone to lose (like with money, hamed, eubank snr) and indifference which is what ward gets

With all due respect guys, the posts about Ward from many on this forum do not sound like "indifferent" posts to me.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Very true, if he never fought again nobody would care.Bricks wrote:Theres a big difference between hate and wanting someone to lose (like with money, hamed, eubank snr) and indifference which is what ward gets
I understand that he has never been able to enter the mainstream and engage casual fans like Mayweather was somehow able to do, but in my opinion, actual boxing fans have even stronger opinions on Ward than they do on Floyd...
Anyway, if he had an obnoxious, boastful personality, he would be a richer man, that was my only point.

Re: The Ward Irony
I don't think he would. He just made almost 12 million for two fights where a fair amount would probably be 2-3. He's doing fine.

Re: The Ward Irony
Nope... The fans don't show up for this guy because they know he's a crook, a dirty fighter, and a stinking cheat... I generally buy every PPV or accept invitations to see them... I never do either for Ward... I just pirate his fights on the Internet which they make you jump through hoops for... Like Micahel Montero I don't like watching Ward because you know you have to beat him bad or knock him out.. He's got the officials in his pocket.jas80s wrote: Anyway, if he had an obnoxious, boastful personality, he would be a richer man, that was my only point

Sure, and Kovalev's face wasn't swollen.Jip wrote:Exactly. Wards face was swollen and ward did more damage with his constant low blows round per round than with his best punch landed in the 8
I was actually how beaten Kovalev looked.

His resume is better than both. His resume at 168 alone is probably better than both fighters resume put together.
