You be protecting yourself and still get stopped if you're being hitand not throwing back. I guess SRL stopping Floyd SR wasn't fair neither. Cotto was protecting himself when he was stopped by Pacquiao. Simply protecting yourself doesn't guarrantee anything if you're stil getting hit.
Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?

He wasn't throwing back which is part of protecting yourself and could result in a stoppage. You can cover up all you want and a fight can stil be stopped if you fail to do anything but that. Kovalev didn't land a punch in the last 30 seconds let alone when he was kneel over. Of course you can say "the punch was low" but if the referee doesn't call it, it's the fighters responsibilty to save himself and Kovalev had a good 30 seconds prior to make something happen if he hits as hard and was much of a destroyer he was made out to be.

Don Turner, Kovalev's assistant trainer's reaction why Kovalev lost: "He got hit".
He goes on to say Kovalev is just a puncher, not a thinker.

The ref was a disgrace. Boxing has become a joke due to bad refs.
Those low blows were so obvious, even in the previous round, but the ref just ignored them. Ward got the stoppage on 3 big obvious low blows and that's disgusting at that level of championship.
Anyone saying it was a good stoppage is just either a big Ward fanboy or a Kovalev hater.

Re: Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?

one has to be blind in every sense of the word to see it as a legit stoppage

Nice trainers Kovalev got. One was discussing jumping the ship to the opposite camp, another one thinks that he can't box. Was likely also leaking information from Kova's camp. The deck was stacked in so many ways.Badhusker wrote:Don Turner, Kovalev's assistant trainer's reaction why Kovalev lost: "He got hit".

Wow. I suppose Turner is at an age where he just says whatever the eff he wants, but that was pretty damning of Kovalev.Badhusker wrote:Don Turner, Kovalev's assistant trainer's reaction why Kovalev lost: "He got hit".

Yah he'll be brutal on the nursing home staff once he's there.
Re: Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?
If that's the case then Kovalev is at fault for picking them.boxing_rocks wrote:Nice trainers Kovalev got. Re: Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?
Yea true deck stacked against old Kovalev a real up hill battle. I believe Turner and Klimas discovered Kovalev in Russia but I am not sure I heard that correctly about Klimas and Turner. Definitely by comments after fight showed Jackson and Turner not really with Kovalev. Kind of sad really.boxing_rocks wrote:Nice trainers Kovalev got. Still I had Kovalev winning first fight 117-112
Had Kovalev winning by 68-66 going into 8th round in the second fight
Kovalev was tiring because he was throwing too many punches and Ward had made very good adjustments from the first fight , negating Kovalev right hand and creating a fight that was a more inside fight, none the less Andre in previous rounds had been warned once maybe twice for low blows, and when he had Kovalev legitmitaley hurt, Ward landed what appeared to be 3 consecutive low blows, for sure 1 massive low blow and fight was called off, wow. In a fair world at minimum Ward would have been deducted a point maybe DQ'd and Kovalev given 5 minutes to recover , but it didn't play out that way.
No way was a Russian fighter going to come in especially during these time of geopoltical tension with Russia and win that fight without getting a KO.

Yep, "racist" Kovalev kept working with black trainers who betrayed him.IKSRTFO wrote:If that's the case then Kovalev is at fault for picking them.boxing_rocks wrote:Nice trainers Kovalev got. SOGgy won both fights. If anyone was robbed in the second fight it was SOGgy being robbed of the satisfaction of the complete beatdown of Krushedner, who did a sh!tload of tough talk that he simply could not back up.
Unfortunate ending but the right boxer got the W, again.
Re: Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?
I don't agree with the stoppage but I agree with the winner being Ward. Kovalev was gonzo. He wasn't coming back in this fight. His legs were gone and there's no way he rebounded after expending all of that energy. Ward worked him like a puppeteer in this fight. Ward initiated the clinches and made Kovalev expend tons of energy. Kovalev threw way more punches in the early rounds. It was a genius gameplay after hearing that Kovalev was making conditioning such a huge focal point of this fight.
The referee sucked. Granted. Boxing is a mess with these same dope ref's that stand in the way of the sport being great. Now Boxing has to worry about these boxers taking dives after receiving punches after the bell. I really wish that someone with a brain took the sport over and made some adjustments to bring the sport to where it should be. That whole PPV even on Saturday was a black eye for the sport when it should have been such a great night. Ward deserves better and i say that as a Kovalev fan. Ward took this crazy beast down and the ref ruined what could have been such a great night for a great champion. I'll give him his due, he deserves it.

Re: Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?
No, and the fact that the poll isn't 100% shows how many people post here who aren't boxing fans. Even if Kovalev was heading to a stoppage loss, the rules are there for a reason. Maybe we should let everyone hit below the belt to force a stoppage.
Re: Do you agree with the result of Kov vs Ward?
Actively posts untruths ?? Dont get so wound up. The way i saw it, if you go back several blows prior to this Kovalev wasnt protecting himself, he had gone to the ropes and wasnt fighting back. Now, as for Tony Weeks he had listened Kovalev whinge about border line punches and at one stage watched him turn his back on his opponent - not the actions of a guy who necessarily wants to fight. Possibly actions of one who knew he was defeated, BUT I agree it could also the actions of a guy who got hit low several times. Hey Ricky, you saw it differently I get that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion hence why this is called a forum.Ricky_ wrote:amwsnw wrote:have you watched the fight? telll me what else was happening. That's the final punch/stoppage. Why are you telling lies that Kovalev wasn't defending himself? Did you want Ward to win so badly you would actively post untruths?
