World Boxing Super Series

Post by MarkMcBurney »

Next 168lb-er to sign up is George Groves!

Sounds good, hope some other top names join him, another Super Six would be awesome.

Who is in the 168 version so far? I know Briedis, Gassiev, and Glowacki are in the CW version, with Kud and I believe Dorticos expressing serious interest.

It seems like they have the money to make these very high quality tournaments.

Only Groves announced for 168 so far, so hopefully some bigger names than expected might also sign up.

Why didn't you expect big names? 50 million for 14 fights isn't going to be for nobodies.

Great to have Groves on board. It's shaping up to be a great competition. I hope they get a couple of yanks on board to stoke some interest there. It's a pity that there are no quality Chinese lads at this weight, it would be great for the sport there.

The more I hear about these tournaments, the more I can forget about that bleeding circus that will be the only thing most people will think of when they hear about boxing.

Has glowacki been confirmed ?

Hopefully Kudrysahov is in it. Him v Gassiev will be mental. Two plodding Russians with massive power and poor defence.

I have to admit I'm not really a fan of the smith bros, except maybe Stephen.

It'd be funny seeing Callum bash up paul tbh

Was Kessler not supposed to be making a comeback? Perhaps he'll enter?

I thought Wlodarczyk was in the Cruisers, not Glowacki, or is he in too?

So so far confirmed:

Wlodarczyk
Breidis
Gassiev
Glowacki (??)

Yunier Dorticos has been confirmed for the cruiseriweights, just 4 more to go, with Usyk seemingly through the door too, so which other 3 would you's like? I'd settle for Tabiti, Askin and Glowacki.

Eddie Hearn also stated it's possible Callum Smith will enter the tournament IF they can agree his fight with Dirrell for the WBC strap still goes ahead as part of it. This would be win/win for everyone, anther belt and top two contenders for the tournament, and good money for both competing. Also if the media start picking the coverage of this up then fighters will become huge names after the conclusion of this. That's my hope anyway.

Might I also say that Andre vs Utzcatzgui would be another good fight for this tournament.

I'd love to see Benavidez in it too.

Kessler in at 168 apparently. Obviously well past his prime but with only Groves announced for the Super-Middleweight tournament so far they need to start getting some more names in.

He believes, after 4 years out. He can't just jump in with the best 168ers

Good. I don't want him to fight anymore. Why come back he isn't going to be what he once was.

His time is done and he will be looked back in a very positive way if he never fights again. Coming back will tarnish that. He also had bad eye problems as well which kept him inactive and retired him.

I'd love tournaments in every weight but we have to be realistic.

Promotional issues get in the way of things ( which is a shame). This is why I don't have high hopes for the super middleweight one alongside the fact the weight isn't stacked.

As for cruiserweight it is the opposite loads of fighters without big promotional commitments and a very good lineup announced so far. Kudryashov has said he is up for it hopefully Usyk is in and that is all the champions*

* Lebedev is a paper champion Gassiev should be the unified champion now.

Fair enough, probably makes sense but in terms of the tournament there's hardly a host of better options. Smith/Dirrell and Zeuge should be added. Benavidez would be a really interesting addition. That undefeated Turkish fella that beat Periban might be a cheap filler with a good record.

Edit - I say that as if he's not very good, in fairness I've never watched him so for all I know he could be excellent.
