Patriotic rooting ?
Re: Patriotic rooting ?
You're welcome BC. It makes a lot of sense when you know that doesn't it?
In answer to the Fury v Joshua question, Ossy is right. Anthony Joshua is way more popular probably because he's seen as a nice guy and great role model as well as having a more exciting style.
I'm pleased and proud to say that for the vast majority of UK fight fans, the white man v black man thing is a complete non-issue, although there are always exceptions, maybe more than I realize.

Re: Patriotic rooting ?
Best Coast & Candyslim, it is expected and natural to root for your compatriots, but not always. I dont care for flags or anthems, but I despise crowds booing on national anthems of their opponents ("Balkaneros" do it often, but I was surprised by Brits booing on Ukrainan anthem on Joshua-Klitschko fight) or burning "enemies flags" or screaming about killing (Americans, Russians, Germans, Brits, Mexicans, it is simply the same).
I have a lot of friends, casual fans, following mostly HW division. Joshua has been becoming very popular among them, he is something like archetype of HW champion : tall and strong, muscular puncher with exciting style. Most of them respect Klitschko, but his style (clinching/holding)is too boring for them. Fury is considered a "very cool fool" and he is rather beloved, some of my friends are his followers on Instagram.
Rivalry between AJ and TF is (could/should be) wonderful for boxing, generally speaking.

Sadly Valmar we Brits do have at least our fair share of poorly educated, mouthy, aggressive young men who don't necessarily mature, just grow older. They are the ones who get the British their reputation for boorishness when on holiday, and for football hooliganism. This definitely seems to be a trait of the British character buried deeper in some than others.
These traits are not welcome in a peaceful society but they make tough and gritty fighting men in times of war, and it has probably been that way for centuries. I believe it was Kipling who famously said of the British soldier "It's Tommy this and Tommy that, and throw him out, the brute ... but he's the hero of his country when the guns begin to shoot" - basically he's saying everyone complains about the boorish behaviour of our rowdy and pugnacious young men, but there are times when our nation has had good reason to be grateful for those same qualities.
For the record I cringe in shame when I hear foreign people, flags or national anthems etc being disrespected by some of my more ignorant compatriots. In their defense it's generally not personal. They aren't necessarily prejudiced, they'll boo anybody

Lucky Brits ! You can always know which side would your "tough guys" choose in the the case of war. Here, on Balkan, only God Almighty knows.candyslim wrote:You're always welcome Valmar

Nationalism is stupid and evil.
Bunch of idiots willing to kill for a manipulated idea.
Bunch of idiots waving flags of countries that routinely sh!t on everyone but the rich.
Even the very progressive countries of Northern Europe have practices and policies that are devastating to the poor.
Many of those abuses occur outside of their borders so they are able to maintain their progressive identity.
I wish we could forget these imaginary borders and just treat everyone as equals.
I've rooted at one time or another for fighters/athletes from just about every nation/region of the world, depending on the individual athlete. But that doesnt mean it's "EVIL" to root for someone from you local school, hometown, home state/province, your country or your region of the world (Africa, Asia, Americas, etc).
But nonetheless, feel free to keep waving YOUR flag...the white snowflake one-world flag with a Unicorn in the middle.
Why isn't human nature the many places where "war" was mostly taunting and fist fights? (Instead of using lethal weapons used for hunting)
Why isn't human nature the much more common living arrangement of multiple cultures, languages and people in one area?
In fact, the consolidation of "one people" geographically bordered off never was a worldwide concept until fairly recently.
The people of the Caribbean had no such single island nations. People may have had related tribes in Cuba, Jamaica, and Haiti that they had closer relationships with than the people on the their own islands. They co-existed in closer proximity to each other, with less land space, and had relatively no war.
So please stop telling all of us that our nature is that of your imagined cultural/scientific history.
Sorry buddy, you, like the other violence apologists, don't realize that your view of human nature is highly influenced by those in power who benefit from the false perception of, and a severe misinterpretation of survival of the fittest.
The people in power love to convince you we were always at each others throats.
It justifies their power.
It keeps everybody from looking up.

I really like Joshua and was rooting for him vs Klitschko. AJ is exciting, congenial, disciplined and dedicated. But I must confess, if he ever fights Wilder I will be rooting for Deontay. If that makes me a "nationalist" then so be it...ValMar wrote:Best Coast & Candyslim, it is expected and natural to root for your compatriots, but not always. Sorry dude. You lefties love to whine about "evil colonialists" and "imperialists" and love to blame the white man for all the world's problems. But historical fact is that long before Europeans came to America or Africa, many African and Native American tribes were at war with each other!! Africans were being enslaved by fellow Africans 5 CENTURIES before white Europeans even arrived on that continent. It's just as evil for an Africans to enslave other Africans as it is for Europeans to enslave themBAD INTENTIONS wrote:Crazy how a few cultures went around killing everyone, and all of a sudden they define ALL of "human nature".Best Coast wrote:Sorry amigo. Trying to play it off by pretending white European "imperialists" introduced violence/slavery to North America, Africa, etc is just a ridiculous fantasy. African and Native American tribes KILLED each other over territorial and other disputes. War and violence are part of HUMAN NATURE not just "rich imperialist's" nature.

War and violence are really dark side of human nature, and I hate this dark side. I do not need war, I do not need any kind of violence.
I do not want to bother any of posters with my life story, but believe me, war is really traumatic experience. I am fed up of keybord warriors, f.ck them.

The world is an evil place... That doesn't mean you give up the fight for peace, justice, fairness, kindness, generosity, and neighborly behavior -- because whatever you do that's positive and selfless, means one less evil person in the world -- at least for that day when you were good.candyslim wrote:Well said ValMar. Not sure if you are aware of it, but "Tunney" actually refers to the user name that "Freedom2013" used to post with here at Current Scene. He was exposed as a racist who regularly frequented a racist sports website whose name I cannot remember. Since changing his user name to Freedom2013 he has SLIGHTLY toned down his racist sentiments against black fighters, but still has a strong anti-black bias in many of his posts/threads, especially against black American fighters (he's not fond of Jews either and is especially hard on Jewish refs and commentators (Teddy Atlas, Jack Reiss, MAx Kellerman, etc).candyslim wrote:Can't see Bad intentions succeeding where Dempsey failed.
