Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
Calzaghe had two extremely worthy scalps in 2008 - RJJ and Hopkins. Let us imagine him facing recent Ward on the the neutral venue with honest ref and judges. What do you think about this fantasy match ?
I think Ward would win, but I would root for Calzaghe. What about you ?

Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
Calzaghe's relentlessness and pace makes it hard for anyone at the weight to steal rounds off him imo.
Ward is ward though, shame they missed eachother by a few years.

Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
This is very hard. Calzaghe got into a great rhythm, his dad was a musician i remember, and his stamina, relentlessness and awkwardness would confound his opponents. But if Ward was to constantly disrupt his rhythm with the tackling and grappling....it would cause problems, but perhaps Joe could keep firing on the inside without tiring. I would want Joe to win.
Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
UK - Calzaghe; US - Ward; neutral - ?

Neutral, let us say Turkey or Germany....or Russia, why not....Ezzard wrote:UK - Calzaghe; US - Ward; neutral - ?
Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
Just a really tough call. Would probably look something like the first half of Calzaghe-Hopkins. There would be a lot of "depends what you like," "glad I'm not a judge tonight" rounds. Neither of them would wear out, and they'd both be making adjustments. Probably just twelve ugly rounds and then "well... let's see what the judges said."

will largely depend on the venue

Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
Joe Calzaghe's unorthodox volume slapping would have presented a huge problem to any fighter, but unfortunately for him, the biggest names on his resume were all far removed from their physical primes, apart from Kessler.
The Welshman was also offered career-high purses twice to face Carl Froch, but he declined the opportunity to face the man from Nottingham in preference of receiving smaller paydays against easier opposition.
Andre Ward takes the victory in this fight comfortably.

2006 Calzaghe would probably win on points
Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
These two have one thing in common; they adapt during the fight to win.
Prime v Prime - Calzaghe on points. Close though. Jokes style is more exciting than SOG, but it could go either way.

As I know, Calzaghe was at SMW in 2006, and Ward is LHW right now.darkstar81 wrote:2006 Calzaghe would probably win on points

He could move up a division.ValMar wrote:As I know, Calzaghe was at SMW in 2006, and Ward is LHW right now.

JC defeated two live legends in 2008, and because of that I determined 2008 version of him. OK, RJJ had passed his prime before that, it was questionable for BH, but it was the great achievement for Calzaghe, in any case.Horse wrote:He could move up a division.ValMar wrote:As I know, Calzaghe was at SMW in 2006, and Ward is LHW right now.

Re: Joe Calzaghe (2008) vs recent Andre Ward ?
Something I've been thinking about a lot over the last few months. Would probably have been an awful fight to watch, lots of holding/grappling/dirty tactics (Calzaghe had a proper boxing brain - he wouldn't let Ward get away with constant fouling, he'd be doing exactly the same back). But also would have been extremely intriguing.
If pushed, I'd probably go for Ward who would employ similar tactics to Hopkins, but would also have the stamina to keep it going all night rather than fading as Hopkins did in the later stages.
I'd be rooting for Calzaghe though.

Boxerbeetle, it is very intersting thing. My opinion is the same, totally the same....I have to mention just one thing - opinions are the same, but your English is much better than mine.......Boxerbeetle wrote:Something I've been thinking about a lot over the last few months. Yeah as you probably know I really love me some Joe, but when I try picturing this one it always ends up looking that wayBoxerbeetle wrote:Something I've been thinking about a lot over the last few months. This Froch accusation does need some proof, because it sounds like bullshit. Retrospective made up bullshit, which has followed Calzaghe forever. So, another long winded opportunity is here, please explain.Enlightened-One wrote:Joe Calzaghe's unorthodox volume slapping would have presented a huge problem to any fighter, but unfortunately for him, the biggest names on his resume were all far removed from their physical primes, apart from Kessler.

It's not bûllshît. I have previously presented my evidence to the forum. I can do so again... later on this evening.SFW wrote:This Froch accusation does need some proof, because it sounds like bullshit. Retrospective made up bullshit, which has followed Calzaghe forever. I have a proven track record of defending my claims by citing evidence, so I'm a tad surprised that you doubt me.
Do you care to keep saying the word "bûllshît" over-and-over again, or do you care to research the matter for yourself and retract your bûllshît accusations before I post the proof?
