Re: Mayweather v McGregor
McGregor won't last the distance purely on it being new to him.
Elite amateurs start with four or six rounders to build themselves up for 12 and were expected to believe McGregor can do it in his first fight against the best of a generation.

How is it embarrassing for the sport of Boxing that a retired Boxer is about to come out of retirement and easily beat a 2 weight division World Champion in UFC in his athletic prime? This fight is for the "UFC Champions can kick anybody's ass" crowd, and anybody else that wants to watch just for the hell of it when Mayweather easily handles this guy.
It doesn't hurt the sport, doesn't help it either...it's just an event. The kind of event that isn't done that often.
In a way it evokes the early days of UFC. Boxer vs UFC Champion what's gonna happen?
Remember UFC 1? UFC 2?
Tae Kwon Do vs Wrestler...What's gonna happen?
Sumo vs Jiu Jitsu...What's gonna happen?
Kickboxing vs Sambo...What's gonna happen?
In a way this is reminiscent of that...I mean not for us. We all know what's gonna happen...but that's the way this event feels to the masses. Don't take it away from the poor schlubs, just sit back, crack open a beer, invite over all the MMA guys you know and see if you can make a friendly bet with 'em that Floyd wins.
It's just a one off event guys. The sky's not falling here. If it ain't your cup of tea don't buy it. Personally though I'm 100% confident in Floyd's victory as I'm sure most of us are, I can see the appeal of the fight to the general public. So I'm fine with both guys taking it, and who can blame them? Would you turn down the money on the table here if you were either guy?
For Mayweather to beat McGregor it has to be a dull fight (like most of his wins over the last decade). He doesn't take risk. He's a super smart, super talented fighter who doesn't care about how he looks, just winning - and fair play to the lad. He's f*cking rich![]()
The world is so interconnected now that this could just be a massive black eye for all concerned.
I'm hoping that Mayweather completely outboxes McGregor for 3/4 rounds then McGregor knocks him out in some MMA manner, giving Mayweather the DQ win & MMA fans the chance to say "our sport is for tough guys"
The damage to boxing argument is very America-centric. In the UK this won't do the same business or be watched by as many people as Joshua v Wlad and that did nothing but good for the sport domestically.

I don't disagree with you, but don't forget Lomachenko did a 12 rounder in his second fight, so it's not unheard of.Chris W 1982 wrote:McGregor won't last the distance purely on it being new to him.

It's also rather disingenuous to pretend this is all new to McGregor. He routinely takes part in contests with five five-minute rounds.Asterix wrote:I don't disagree with you, but don't forget Lomachenko did a 12 rounder in his second fight, so it's not unheard of.Chris W 1982 wrote:McGregor won't last the distance purely on it being new to him.

This fight will surely do bigger numbers than Josh vs Wlad in the UK. Or at least on par.

Re: Mayweather v McGregor
I'd ask why you think that. I think it won't, based on the following:TheLeprechaun wrote:This fight will surely do bigger numbers than Josh vs Wlad in the UK. Or at least on par.
Floyd isn't that popular in the UK. Everyone knows who he is, but bar Pacquaio when was he last in a fight that did the business over here? You have to go back to Hatton, and that was because Ricky was a big domestic name. Even the fight against Canelo was buried away on BN.
McGregor is the face of MMA, but MMA isn't as popular in the UK as it elsewhere. Attendances are average, viewing figures aren't great. And this isn't even an MMA event. For sales to massively kick in you need boxing fans to want to watch this, and I'm not sure that many do.
The simple fact of it being on in the middle of the night.
It'll do decent numbers for a novelty event but I think it's a vastly bigger event elsewhere.

True, but 12x3 minutes rounds of boxing is far, far more intensive than 5x5 minute rounds of MMA.dirk2686 wrote:It's also rather disingenuous to pretend this is all new to McGregor. I've never done mma, but 2 minutes of wrestling made 4 rounds of boxing seem relaxing.
Re: Mayweather v McGregor
I disagree. Grappling is exhausting.Boxerbeetle wrote:True, but 12x3 minutes rounds of boxing is far, far more intensive than 5x5 minute rounds of MMA.dirk2686 wrote:It's also rather disingenuous to pretend this is all new to McGregor. Re: Mayweather v McGregor
Grappling requires a lot of energy and is very tiring. Fighters in both MMA and Boxing have superb Stamina. McGregor won't have a stamina issue in this fight, he'll have a talent-gap issue.Boxerbeetle wrote:True, but 12x3 minutes rounds of boxing is far, far more intensive than 5x5 minute rounds of MMA.dirk2686 wrote:It's also rather disingenuous to pretend this is all new to McGregor. Re: Mayweather v McGregor
Hmmm, I might start a thread/poll on this, would be interested to see people's opinions. I've always believed that the championship rounds of a competitive boxing match are about as exhausting as it gets, and don't recall seeing too much evidence to the contrary from UFC or anything similar (not accounting for things like marathon running, which are just too different to compare effectively).IT wrote:I disagree. Re: Mayweather v McGregor
To the extent that he's in an unfamiliar sport against a superior exponent, I suspect McGregor will end up being rather tense in the ring (unless there's some kind of agreement before the fight between them that Mayweather doesn't tool him too badly) and his stamina will suffer accordingly.gilgamesh wrote:Grappling requires a lot of energy and is very tiring. I mean, hell maybe he will have a stamina issue, but it's not like it's a needed advantage for Floyd. Floyd can probably be shooting the sh*t with people in the front row the way he was against Henry Bruseles in this fight. Conor's gonna get his ass kicked whether he's got good stamina or not. If he runs out of gas he'll probably just quit.

I mean fighting someone you know is that much better than you, and the second-guessing it makes you do and the tension it creates in you, can be fvcking exhausting even if the pace isn't that high.

Stamina isn't Conor's best trait. But boxing certainly doesn't require any more conditioning than mma. Very good point about anxiety, I was a better boxer than I was a wrestler so that is a contributing point why boxing was so much easier for me. Crazy misconception a lot of people have about those guys conditioning. They train relentlessly.

Re: Mayweather v McGregor
This may explain it and perhaps also explain why McGregor's stamina then held up better in the 2nd fight:Boxerbeetle wrote:Didn't McGregor gas early against Diaz?gilgamesh wrote:Grappling requires a lot of energy and is very tiring. I dont think McGregor has a stamina problem, although it is suggested in MMA circles that he does but that is really only based on his fights with Diaz, particularly the first fight when he clearly ran out of steam after a very fast and productive start. However he fought the diaz fights at 168lbs, which is more than his walk around weight and he packed on muscle for those fights that he would never usually have. He has previously ruptured his ACL and so that adversly impacts upon the amount of road work that he can do. He also took the first fight on relatively short notice.
12 rounds boxings compared to 5 x 5 minute rounds of MMA will be less physically gruelling in my opinion. As mentioned, the grappling aspect is energy sapping. Boxing is less sophistciated and technical than MMA in terms of fighting systems. I see a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather as being far less dangerous for McGregor's health than him defending his 155lbs UFC title against top contenders.
Lets not forget that McGregor is a professional fighter in the toughest of all combat sports. He is fighting fit and a dedicated professional in the prime of his life (27 years old). In my opinion McGregor is fit enough to box 12 rounds especially against a light punching 40 year old counter-puncher, who hasnt fought for 2 years and has low punch output. Mayweather has previously fought at 154lbs on 3 occasions and didnt stop any of those 3 opponents. McGregor is naturally the bigger man.
Personally, i think this fight will sell big in the UK, paricularly once the world presser tour starts. McGregor is something else with promotion. A very entertaining character.
