How do amateur boxers make money?

Post by DaNo »

Does anyone how these fighters with long amateur careers (multiple time olympic medalists who turn pro late or never turn pro) make money? Everybody says they don't get paid for fighting, but how do they make a living? Any thoughts?

In many countries the state/sport authorities, National Boxing Federation or Olympic Committe pay a monthly salary to the National Team boxers. And they can get bonuses for international medals. In other countries the boxers will be employed by the Army/Navy/Marines/Police, etc but can box more or less fulltime. Some top boxers can get some nice sponsorships and also collect money from their province or city.
Many countries have Leagues where the teams pay winning bonuses and then there is the World Series of Boxing.

It was 30k some years ago so probably more now. You had to be world ranked in order to get that much as well.

Accommodation, meals and travel are all covered so it's a decent deal for young boxers who aren't putting another career on hold that they could pick up on should their boxing career not take off.

I read that following his silver medal at Athens 2004, Amir Khan was offered £70 000 per year to stay amateur by the ABA. He turned pro one year later.

I think both Clemente Russo and Roberto Cammarelle are Officers in the Italian police.

I think some are paid under the table, like college basketball players.

Not true. If they are on the national team they get a stipend. If they win medals in the Olympics they get paid and I think also for worlds. At some minor international tournaments they get money also.

Think that they own small competitions and may be advertisement contracts with small brands.

when i was on the national team, #1 get $1,000 per month, #2 get $700 per month and i don’t remember what #3 got if they got anything at all. from what i hear, its still the same today. if you medal at an international competition you can get anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 for your performance. as you probably guess it-- no medal, no money. when i fought in the asian games (big competition), they said $100K for gold , $50K for silver, and $33K for bronze. i was one fight away from bronze lol.

most people i know in amateur boxing have jobs outside of boxing to pay rent and keep the lights on. tough grind. my friends overseas get taken care of much better in amateur boxing.

oh my god, I thought all boxers get money from competitions even though they haven't got medals. However, there are more disadvantages than I initially thought. My friend is non-professional boxer and he receives pretty huge sum of money every month for his trainings and champs, however he lacks money after all. Last month he said that he had disocvered a great article describing a way to earn money online-taking online surveys(https://yourmoneygeek.com/surveys-for-money/). He tried and was actually satisfied with extra income.
