Nice work so far

I hadn't realized how few defences of the Australasian titles had been made. Or have you just put up some framework and there is plenty more to add?

I hadn't realized how few defences of the Australasian titles had been made. Or have you just put up some framework and there is plenty more to add?

Ongoing research but I don't know when people vacate their title because most just won the title and not defend it

Your not the first person that asked me that actually but wasn't sure because in boxrec it was entered as Australian title but since multiple people are saying same thing we can assume it was also for Australasian title

An Australasian Title could only be contested between an Australian boxer and a New Zealand boxer. That would be the reason why there have not been many fights. There were two, for the Lightweight title, in Brisbane in the early 1970's between Hector Thompson and Manny Santos.

That makes perfectly good sense.

But if you watch the Michael-Ropis fight not only does Howard Leigh announce it as for the Australasian title. Ron Casey also says it was for the Australasian title in the wrap up.

Then again, few sports have more mistakes and inaccuracies than boxing. In fact thinking about it, probably none.

It appears that Colin Bell and Tom Heeney fought twice for the Australian title, with a footnote for the Australasian title for the first of those two, sourced from a Mackay newspaper by boxrec. Heeney was NZ HW champion at the time of both bouts.

Jimmy Clabby also defeated George Cook for the HW Australasian title.

Just to add to the confusion of this title which i profess to know very little about. Double checking the records about the possible Austalasian bouts i had suspected, i noticed American born boxer Jimmy Clabby, former World (Oz version) WW champion, former World (US version) MW champion, former WW, MW, HW Australian champion, towards the end of his career won the NZ HW Title then proceeded to challenge Australians Tommy Uren for the Australasian MW title and George Cook for the HW version, if that isnt confusing enough

Seriously though im suprised the title isnt utilised more often, esp in recent times where Oz and NZ could probably benefit from a bit of trans Tasman rivalry....

Australasian title was born, because in those days Aussies & Kiwis only title apart from their National was Commonwealth & OPBF, which could open WBC's gate.
These days, regional titles are bob a dozen....albeit so...will open all gates, because they're affiliated with peak bodies - WBC, WBA,IBF, WBO etc etc
Such is life in wonderful wonderful wonderful & honest world in pro boxing

Junket boys, who cough-up to 500 bucks per year to respective bodies, eventually score overseas gig = purse, 2 days accommodation & 3 meals for doing SFA, because they simply don't posses any authority.

WHAT...............I was saying Malcolm was the Australian Jr Welterweight champion at the time of the Michael v Ropis so they could not have fought for the National title that night it was the Australasian Jr Welterweight title fight that's all mate.

After a 7 year absence the Australasian super welterweight title will be dusted off and presented to the winner of Dwight Ritchie and Kiwi Shay Brock in December.
