I'd enjoy the fight more.

At least he's a super featherweight.
I'd enjoy Marriaga more; there, does that offset your opinion?

Marriaga and Smith are around the same level for me. If Marriaga moved up and fought Smith I suspect that it would be very competitive. He put Valdez through hell last fight, and I think Valdez is better than SS.

But I agree that it's lame. Walters was only 9 months ago and I think Sosa was a solid lower top 10 guy, so I'm not buying any suggestion that Loma is happy fighting weak opposition, but this is his worst opponent since Koasicha in 2015.
If he closes out the year against someone good like Berchelt or Corrales I don't mind.

But it is very disspointing it is not Salido.

Smith would be a crap opponent for Lomachenko anyway, so it doesn't really matter who is better.

Lomachenko needs to be in talks to fight all of the best super featherweights now. It doesn't matter if they have a fight arranged.

Talk to them now and try to get a contract signed to fight the winner. He's wasting his prime.

We'll see what happens after this fight. It was only 7 months ago that he beat Walters, and if he beats another top opponent after Marriaga, let's assume at the end of 2017 or early 2018, I wouldn't say that his prime is being wasted.

I don't like this fight at all, but I can live with it given the opposition Loma's faced in roughly the last half year. If the next opponent is anyone other than a top fighter, then it will be another story.

He's already done this type of thing in his career before though.

He fought chumps for 2 years after beating Russell Jr (which wasn't a super amazing win anyway), before fighting Martinez (who was a pretty weak world champion).

He's clearly a very talented fighter, but what's then point of all of his talent if he doesn't feel the need to prove it against the best?

Vasyl Lomachenko

Nicholas Walters
Roman Martinez
Gary Russell Jr
Jason Sosa
Orlando Salido - (Lost)
Gamalier Rodriguez
Jose Ramirez
Suriya Tatakhun
Romulo Koasicha
---

A good record, but hardly mind-blowing stuff. His recent weak opponents are not really the exception, they are pretty much the rule.

He needs to stop fighting these guys and only fight the best. As of now, he's nowhere near a (deserved) Hall of Fame spot.

Top Rank instead announced late Thursday night that Lomachenko will meet Colombia’s Miguel Marriaga in a super featherweight title fight ESPN will broadcast August 5 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

“When [Salido’s] financial requests were met, suddenly there were other issues, like a hand problem, which led to a weight problem, which led to Marriaga,” Moretti told ESPN.com. “Funny how that happens. So we moved on to secure the best possible opponent at the time, and Miguel Marriaga stepped up to the plate.”
Fighting on ESPN will be good exposure and good for Lomachenko's career ,even if it's a crappy opponent.

Why doesn't he fight 12 of these guys a year, if he wants more exposure?

Don't piss about only fighting 2 chumps a year when you can fight 12 or more of them.

Great exposure.

Exactly Mayweather has been crystal clear they don't want that fight because he isn't ready. Pure bollocks because anyone with a paper belt should be ready to fight anyone in their weight class.

Marriaga is a crap fight through. Walter beat him comfortably. Valdez beat him in a good fight, but Loma is multiple levels above Valdez ( though I don't rate Valdez as high as others)

Looking at the rankings on the site the top 10

2 and 4, 3 and 10 squaring off in a couple of weeks.

Loma already whooped 5 and 6

7 has had three BRUTAL fights in a row and not fit.

8 been discussed

9 lost last two fights to no 3

Outside of that you are struggling. I would say Edner cherry would be a decent keep busy fight.

Hopefully it's a unification or move up in weight after. Whilst it seems good fights are on espn. Is this another obstacle to stop good fights happening ?
Completely agree, Marriaga is a poor fight. And there is a simple reason for that, Rigo was seemingly offering himself for the date. I have not seen an effort from Loma team to negotiate with Rigo. But dont come here with garbage about Davies. Anyone with half brain should know that Davies is ducking Loma.

Yeh, once Rigo's team called bluff on the 130lbs weight limit.. Loma's team immediatly start talking slowly saying they're not promoters and talk to Top Rank. I knew from there Loma won't be fighting Rigo. Jus his manager Klimas talks too much.

Klimas is one sleazy mother fornicator. I dont trust that man. Yet he has the most exciting stable in the world boxing right now.

..I can certainly relate to boxing fans critisizing Lomachenko's team for choosing Marriaga as the next opponent...however, let's not make ourselves ridiculous trying to take apart his resume..his achievements considering he has to fight in "hostile" environment are very solid, in fact he's achieved a lot more than the most of those fighting on their home turf...respect for that :o

I'm willing to make myself look ridiculous taking apart his resume. At this time it simply isn't all that great.

There are about 5 fighters that he could fight at super featherweight in his next fight that would be about a top 2 win on his record.

He can hugely boost his record at this weight, but unfortunately he seems to be content fighting dull opponents.

Lomachenko should be aiming to become an ATG, but he's going to fall way short at the rate he's going.

His biggest fans should be the most ticked off, but no one seems to care that he's fighting opponents that are essentially worthless.

I would rank Russell above Martinez. In my opinion, Loma already has a very good resume with clear wins over Walters, Russell, Martinez, and Sosa. In 9 fights he's fought 5 people I'd consider top ten, with Walters then being arguably the next best guy in the division, and Russell arguably being top 3 at 126 just a couple of fights later.

I don't think Sosa and Marriaga consecutively is too bad if it's sandwiched between Walters and another top fighter. It's not as if Loma has spent years fighting nothing but poor opposition.

If Fury made his first defence of his world title against someone as crap as Marriaga then I would criticize it.

I am willing to criticize my favourite fighters if they fight chumps. I'm not a hypocrite. I want the fighters I support to fight the best.

What's the point in fighting chumps, in forgettable fights, which add nothing to their legacy?

Like I said: His biggest fans should be the most upset by this, because every fight he wastes makes it that much further down the ATG rankings he will end up.

Martinez was a better win at the time and he still has a better overall record in my opinion.

Lomachenko has a good record, but there are people saying that he is the P4P No. 1. Based on his record, he is nowhere near that level.

Lomachenko is a super talent and expectations for his level of opposition should be far higher.

I don't even like him and I expect more from him than his nuthuggers. It's a strange situation.

I suppose Salido is looking to get over 1 Million the next time he takes on that steep of a challenge. I can easily see him losing to just about anybody at this point though and not receiving offers like that anymore. We'll see how it ultimately plays out.

I don't mind Vasyl vs Marriaga, it's nothing to get excited about, but I expect Vasyl wouldn't fight again at all until like October or November so it's ok by me.

Vasyl has already fought better opposition in less than a dozen fights than most fighters have fought after 40. He'll be fighting another top opponent in all likelihood by years end.

I just want the best to fight the best.

Lomachenko is fighting the BoxRec World No. 27 fighter from the division below.

That ranking is unfair, but he should still be fighting much better opposition than this.

If boxers regularly fought in 50-50 fights then boxing could possibly be the No. 1 most popular sport in the world.

Boxing is a shadow of what it could be and I'm sick and tired of boxing fans being apologists for the godawful matchmaking that happens at all levels in this sport.

listen, as a boxing fan I share your concern...and I believe I said that fighting Marriaga is not necessarily the step in the right direction..however, it's not like we live in a perfect world and with this in mind Loma's resume is a lot more solid compared to those I've seen in a long time IMO..

Aren't you one of Tyson Fury's biggest pom-pom waving cheerleaders? You have no right to criticize any fighter if you're gonna defend that fat, unprofessional piece of sh*t.

Have I claimed that his reign as champion has been amazing?

No, he's wasted two years of his prime and he might be a washed up bum if he ever returns.

You are impressed by Lomachenko fighting Marriaga? Screw you, idiot!
