Anyone care about weigh-ins?

Post by surfthehurf »

I saw a link to a video mentioning/featuring the fighters on tonight's Summertime Brawl bill, then realised I didn't have the patience to watch because it was a weigh-in.

Are there boxing fans out there who genuinely give a sht about weigh-ins?

If it's a big fight and there's someone who's notoriously struggled with the weight it can be interesting to see what sort of condition they're in.

Tonight's main card I've barely got any interest in (that said I'll still probably watch it), let alone the weigh in.

There's absolutely nothing gay about getting excited about seeing a muscular young man in his undies flexing his muscles. It's straight as fornicate and not in any way shape or form closeted voyeurism.

Maybe they should turn 3 x pre-fight events into 2. Those three events being public workout, press conference, weigh in.

For me, just the photo of the two fighters is more than enough.
From that I can get a reasonable idea of how fit they are, and if either looks weight drained.
The photo of Charvez and Canelo at the weigh in said it all, didn't it?

I can understand at a massive event, e.g. Hatton in his heyday or a big super fight. I can understand that this generates some special interest and people just get excited and want to be involved in it all, especially if they've travelled to like Vegas or somewhere and haven't really got anything better to do but get involved. But for 95% of fights I just have no interest in it whatsoever.

2 guys, how much do they weigh, cue generic stare down, pictures taken, jog on.

There's nothing better to do in Vegas than drool over half naked men on weighing scales? Really?

The atmosphere at the big fight weigh-ins is good though and part of the build up to a massive fight. I would suggest you have some 'issues' if you think everybody is drooling over half-naked men ;)

I find almost all boxing matches boring right now, let alone the weigh-ins.

Waste of time.

Oh you'd love a bodybuilding show, helping other men apply fake tan

Interesting you say that, because I am looking forward to seeing Buatsi's debut but then I also know it will be a 1st round blowout. Much like Lawrence Okolie's 4th fight will be. On the other hand I get bored by the small guys who always go the distance.

The weight ins are bullshit in every way you look at it. Many years ago they had it hours before the fight, but because so many boxers got dehydrated during the actual fight, they changed it to one day before the fight. Now you get 300 pound fighters who have a weight in of 5 gram. So I think fighters should be weight in 1 minit before the match, or not at all.
There are fighters out there who are risking their health for these weight ins, while during the actual fight the boxers actually have a lot higher weight.

I find them interesting although I can't really tell you why. I even went to the Froch-groves 2 weigh in. It was a curiously dull affair. I was excited about going to the fight (because in them days, you actually get tickets and stuff) and it was only a couple of tube rides away so I went down.

I had to follow it because I join the PTBF and as expected there's a lot of cheating in the dwarfclasses, I did tayke a bit of risk, but still, I'm absolutely terrible in it, currently 16/58 people are better in it then me. I expect to end around rank 10 at the end of the year.
