For sure, Eddie Hearn is very media friendly and he portrays himself as a likeable and humorous character when being interviewed in front of the TV cameras, but let's not forget that it is actually Sky Sports that is the driving force behind the vast majority of Matchroom's most recent successes.

Sky are the ones funding most of the fight cards and relentlessly promoting Matchroom's events on a 24/7 basis.

If Eddie Hearn didn't have the backing of Sky's massive war chest fund, coupled with fulfilling his contractual obligation for that network to sanction the contests that they'll allow to be included in the various fight cards, I truly doubt that everyone would be singing his praises.

We also shouldn't forget that it was actually his father that established the business in the first place and he's still involved in the day-to-day running of it.

So whilst Eddie Hearn certainly deserves to receive a lot of praise, it needs to be tempered by the context of how he was able to achieve such success.

I don't think the booing showed hatred for Hearn. It was more bad timing, interviewing him after the fighters. As boxing promoters go, I don't think he's that unpopular. He delivers regularly for fighters and fans. Sure he has big money, Matchroom brand etc. but he's still the one who puts it all together.

He gets booed because there is a perception that he makes it "all about him"...sitting in the middle at press conferences, always has his face in the middle of a square off, always giving interviews immediately after fights, walking to the ring with his fighters.

But the reality is he is just the pantomime villain (a role he plays very well for the camera) and the majority who boo see it as a bit of banter rather than hatred

Sky are losing big money to BT so staging a saturday night dust-up on PPV, marketed to football fans on the lash on a Saturday is their business model to claw back money. These fights are heavily advertised on Premier League broadcasts, all it takes is some fake 'beef' and they have an customer base.

He's made himself a personality and put himself centre stage in order to sell the fights, if that results in more exposure and higher earnings for a greater number of fighters then it's all good. I have no real opinion on the man but Matchroom fighters certainly seem to enjoy a far higher profile than those with other promoters; whether he is just a Sky yes man or not perhaps the cards wouldn't have the same pull were they not being promoted as he does...
