Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16
Billy Joe Saunders has a new opponent for his second title defense.
An industry source told RingTV.com that Willie Monroe Jr. will step in and challenge Saunders for his WBO middleweight title on September 16 in London. The source requested anonymity because the deal is not yet official.
Monroe (21-2, 6 knockouts) will have a second shot at a 160-pound title after suffering a sixth-round stoppage to Gennady Golovkin in May 2015. The tricky southpaw actually enjoyed some success in the middle rounds of the defeat, and was able to land some big blows.
Since the setback, the 30-year-old has scored wins over John Thompson and Gabriel Rosado, but inactivity could be an issue. Monroe’s last fight? That September decision win over Rosado.
Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs), too, will be coming off a layoff. The 27-year-old hasn’t fought since December, when he surprisingly struggled en route to a points win over unheralded Russian Artur Akavov. His last outing before that was in December 2015, when he won the title from Andy Lee. Saunders is rated No. 4 by THE RING at 160 pounds.

Hey, that's not too bad a match up.
Probably have to hose both of them down with some WD40 before the first bell.
Could have been a worse opponent for BS at this stage..
It looks like curtsie is going to be "tied up" for a while which is a shame, although Easter will make a more stylistically appealing fight.

WBO ranked number 5.. could have picked worse.. i predict it goes 12 rounds.. a somewhat close fight that we will be scored similar to the Akavov fight in favour or BJS..
Monroe also hasn't fought since before BJS.. must have too much money lol.

Sad to see a 2nd-tier fighter like Monroe become a perennial challenger. His handlers must have some friends in key places.
Re: Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16
He's only fought once for a title and I don't think he's that bad of a challenger, though I'm expecting a boring fight. I'd say he's in the top 15 at 160...

Re: Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16
I'll give you this much...he's better than Gabriel Rosado, who is a 3RD-TIER fighter who's already had 2 undeserved title shots. The fact that Monroe "earned" his title shot by beating Rosado (for a regional WBO title no less) is what grates on me. There are a number of undeserving challengers at various weights who get their title shots because of their connections. He may be top 15 at 160, but there is NO WAY he should be #5!!crusader wrote:He's only fought once for a title and I don't think he's that bad of a challenger, though I'm expecting a boring fight. In addition to any WBO connections he might have, Monroe is a sentimental favorite with old-schoolers who remember his dad "Willie the Worm" as the last guy to beat Marvelous Marvin Hagler before Hagler started his phenomenal 11-year unbeaten streak.
Re: Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16
This fight isn't good or bad. But if anything, it's closer to bad, because it's probably going to be BJS's only fight all year, after coming off of a year when he only had one fight against some scrub named Artur Akavov (cue Russian-biased posters who think literally every Russian boxer is the greatest boxer ever). In an ideal world, BJS's next opponent would rival the best fighters he's ever fought (i.e. it would be Daniel Jacobs). But in a realistic world, I would settle for an opponent who wasn't a total waste of time (e.g. Martin Murray, Maciej Sulecki).

You're wacked out... Does every American poster think every American boxer is the best ever??? I would say not.. But some of them talk about Eastern European based boxers as if you beat 1 you can beat them all.. And lets face it...nobody is bending over to be fair to them or cares if they're on the shelf forever.

I favor Monroe to get a better of BJS. But considering that fight will be close and likely uneventful home decision is a clear possibility. Also I am not entirely sure BJS will make the weight.

I'm rooting for Monroe but if the fight gets slightly close BJS will get the nod. I think Lemieux was adviced to not go to the WBO route just to keep that WBO belt safe for Canelo, win / lose vs GGG.

I think BJS will come unstuck in this one if munroe just keeps the workrate high and stays busy.
Got to be careful saying anything against BJS as you get all sorts leveled at you but he was utter garbage in his last fight and his lack of dedication looks to be catching up with him. Much better opponent than I thought they'd go for.

Re: Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16
I've gone for Saunders decision. It's not a bad fight per se, but for a 160 title is clearly not top quality. Both operators.
If Saunders fights at the level he did last fight he'll lose. He needs this fight to get his career going

Re: Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16
Whilst I’m no fan of Billy Joe Saunders, I do feel that he is underrated and severely disliked, possibly because he’s turned into a mini Tyson Fury.
I believe that people underrate the Brit, for good reason, probably because his most recent performance against Artur Akavov was absolutely terrible. However, this was clearly due to a combination of ring-rust and a training camp prioritised on losing weight rather than obtaining peak conditioning.
In regards to Willie Monroe Jr., whilst his performance against Gabriel Rosado was impressive (he dominated him in a better fashion than Martin Murray did), he would have been inactive for a year by the time he enters the ring against Saunders.
Saunders will also be performing a voluntary defence of his titles, so I’m guessing that the American is considered very beatable by his team, since he is a hand-picked opponent.
It’s no coincidence that Billy Joe is defending his title on the same night as the Golovkin-Canelo bout, as he’ll be trying to showcase his talents in order to finally get one of them to sign the contract to face him.
So I’m expecting a physical prime version of Billy Joe Saunders out-boxing Willie Monroe Jr., in a competitive fight, en route to scoring a legitimate unanimous decision victory.
I reckon that people from this forum will allow their apparent hatred for Saunders’ to cloud their judgement, so instead of supplying an objective and honest evaluation, they’ll boldly proclaim that they’re rooting for the American, but that he’ll get “robbed” on the scorecards.
If the outcome results in a victory for Saunders, then his haters will probably claim one of the following: that he was awarded by a hometown gift from the judges; the ref stopped the fight too soon; or Monroe Jr. was a shot fighter… but if he loses, then Billy Joe wasn’t that good in the first place. He won’t get credit from anyone regardless the outcome.

I don't mind Saunders, but wouldn't call myself a fan either. I do believe he is slightly fortuitous to be champ. Do you believe him to be better than Martin Murray (possibly is now but murrays at the end of his career). Murrays had some good performances against very good opponents but seems destined to be a nearly manEnlightened-One wrote:Whilst I’m no fan of Billy Joe Saunders, I do feel that he is underrated and severely disliked, possibly because he’s turned into a mini Tyson Fury.

LOL. How can Billy Joe go this long as champion and not have a quality defense yet? What an absolute joke. Willie Monroe Jr. is pathetic.

Enlightened-One wrote:Here are the facts:
It was only the 27th January 2017 when Saunders was officially ordered by the WBO to face Khurtsidze, since Canelo was previously the mandatory challenger to the Brit’s title the month prior.
Saunders’ promoter actually had to pay Khurtsidze a six-figure step-aside fee, coupled with having to agree to stage a bout for the Georgian against Tommy Langford for the WBO interim title, in order to get him to agree to step aside to allow Billy Joe to face Gennady Golovkin instead, but the Kazakh ended-up “losing his pen”.
Therefore, Avtandil Khurtsidze’s delay in getting a shot at Saunders was primarily due to K2. However, the ‘Mini Mike Tyson’ shot himself in the foot with all of his criminal activities outside the ring.
Billy Joe Saunders cannot possibly he held responsible for the Khurtsidze & Golovkin situations!
The previous year, Fwank Warren had also attempted to negotiate a deal with Oscar De La Hoya that would involve Billy Joe Saunders appearing on the undercard of the Canelo-Smith bout, which was subject to certain conditions, with a view for the WBO champ to face the winner of that bout:
• Queensberry Promotions would pick the opponent
• Fwank Warren paid for Saunders’ purse, but would receive financial contribution from GBP to pay for his opponent’s purse
• Golden Boy had to guarantee that the winner of this fight would be next in line to face Canelo
Here are the reasons why Fwank Warren declined to allow Saunders to face Rosado:
• Billy Joe had not committed himself to agree to fight on the Canelo-Smith undercard
• Gabriel Rosado was picked by Oscar De La Hoya and was not included in the list of opponents that GBP & Queensberry had originally discussed. Fwank Warren was actually supposed to pick the opponent, but he wasn't given the opportunity
• GBP’s contribution towards the purses of Saunders & Rosado was insufficient, resulting in a greater financial outlay for Queensberry Promotions
• Golden Boy Promotions refused to provide a written guarantee that the winner of the Saunders-Rosado fight would actually be next in line to face Canelo
Coincidentally, Willie Monroe Jr. replaced Saunders and faced Gabriel Rosado instead, with the bout being promoted as the winner being Canelo’s next opponent. There are multiple YouTube videos of Monroe Jr. and Rosado explaining the importance of their fight, due to the financial benefits of facing Canelo. Even the TV commentators and the media had covered the very same narrative.
And guess what happened? Willie Monroe Jr. defeated Gabriel Rosado, but never received a shot at Canelo! I guess that’s the consequences of not requesting GBP’s promises to be committed in writing.
During December 2016, GBP actually lobbied the WBO to instate Canelo as Billy Joe Saunders’ mandatory challenger, which they agreed to do. So the Brit was temporarily obliged to face Oscar De Lay Hoya’s Mexican cash cow, but Alvarez very quickly changed his mind and renounced his status, preferring to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. instead.
Ultimately, Billy Joe Saunders had absolutely no fúckíng control whatsoever to do about the fact that he wasn’t able to secure a bout against Golovkin, Canelo & Khurtsidze!

Here are the timelines in chronological order for what has actually occurred during the Golovkin-Saunders debacle:
• 17/12/2016 – The Golovkin-Jacobs fight is officially announced
• 24/01/2017 - Billy Joe Saunders announces a "game-changing fight" that "the fans will genuinely love", which will require him to "travel", not to the "US" but in his opponents' "home country"
• 07/02/2017 – Fwank Warren announced that middleweight contender Avtandil Khurtsidze would be paid a six-figure step-aside fee, including a shot at the interim version of the WBO middleweight title, to allow Saunders to pursue “a major fight next”
• 13/03/2017 – Billy Joe Saunders claims that he could face GGG “very, very, very, very, very soon”
• 15/03/2017 – The media reports that June 10th is the date set for the GGG-Saunders fight, with Tom Loeffler refusing to confirm the speculation
• 17/03/2017 – Fwank Warren announces that if Golovkin defeats Jacobs then he wants Saunders next
• 18/03/2017 - Gennady Golovkin scores a decision victory over Danny Jacobs
• 19/03/2017 - GGG challenges the Brit to face him in his native Kazakhstan
• 20/03/2017 - Billy Joe Saunders claims that his team commenced negotiations for the GGG fight before he had even faced Jacobs and that they have already agreed the financial terms of the bout, but were simply waiting for Golovkin's signature
• 21/03/2017 - Oscar De La Hoya claims that Team GGG have to be more fair about contract negotiations based on the financials of the Golovkin-Jacobs fight
• 24/03/2017 - Oscar De La Hoya claims that a June fight between Golovkin & Saunders is disrespectful if they also hope to make the Canelo bout in September, due to the possible risks of injury to Golovkin and also reducing the time available to promote the super-fight
• 25/03/2017 - Billy Joe Saunders urges Golovkin to stop wasting time and take the fight
• 28/03/2017 - Billy Joe Saunders issues a deadline of the 31/03/2017 for GGG to agree the fight
• 29/03/2017 - Abel Sanchez claims that Oscar De La Hoya's threats are one way to say that they don't want the GGG-Canelo fight
• 29/03/2017 – Fwank Warren claims all the terms of the GGG fight have been accepted, but Golovkin has ten days, which is a deadline of the 08/04/2017, to sign the contract
• 30/03/2017 - Tom Loeffler claims that his team intend to make the Saunders fight, because nothing is signed with Golden Boy
• 30/03/2017 - Tom Loeffler denies knowledge of deadlines imposed by Saunders & Oscar De La Hoya claiming that an announcement would be made during W/C 03/04/2017
• 31/03/2017 - Billy Joe Saunders reminds Golovkin to sign the fight, offers to loan him his pen and also publishes the text messages he received from Tom Loeffler that proved the delay was caused by Team GGG
• 06/04/2017 - Fwank Warren informs the media that Team GGG is claiming that an injury to Golovkin is delaying the signing of the fight
• 07/04/2017 - Abel Sanchez clearly and adamantly denies the existence of any injury to Golovkin
• 11/04/2017 - Today's date and there are only eight weeks remaining until the originally-planned GGG-Saunders fight date, which now looks unlikely to take place
• 10/06/2017 – Proposed date for the GGG-Saunders bout
• 16/09/2017 – Proposed date for the GGG-Canelo bout
So we know for certain that Saunders had already agreed the terms and the date of the Golovkin bout, with his promoter going as far as paying the WBO’s mandatory challenger a six-figure step-aside fee, but GGG’s pen has somehow went missing!
The Saunders bout fell through and Golovkin wasn't injured, then it is fairly obvious that the lure of the big money Canelo super-fight took priority for GGG over title unification.
Enlightened-One wrote:In my eyes, being injured twice during 2016, the Rosado, Canelo & Golovkin failed fight negotiations, coupled with the fact that Khurtsidze has only just been arrested, in addition to the WBO procrastinating about whether the Brit was able to participate in a voluntary title defence or not, has ultimately hindered his career enormously.
Since the start of 2016, Billy Joe Saunders cannot possibly be blamed for the actions of GBP, K2, Khurtsidze, the WBO or even his own injuries.

The Saunders bout fell through and Golovkin wasn't injured, then it is fairly obvious that the lure of the big money Canelo super-fight took priority for GGG over title unification.Enlightened-One wrote:In my eyes, being injured twice during 2016, the Rosado, Canelo & Golovkin failed fight negotiations, coupled with the fact that Khurtsidze has only just been arrested, in addition to the WBO procrastinating about whether the Brit was able to participate in a voluntary title defence or not, has ultimately hindered his career enormously.
Since the start of 2016, Billy Joe Saunders cannot possibly be blamed for the actions of GBP, K2, Khurtsidze, the WBO or even his own injuries.

So the Brit was temporarily obliged to face Oscar De Lay Hoya’s Mexican cash cow, but Alvarez very quickly changed his mind and renounced his status, preferring to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. instead.
Ultimately, Billy Joe Saunders had absolutely no fúckíng control whatsoever to do about the fact that he wasn’t able to secure a bout against Golovkin, Canelo & Khurtsidze!Enlightened-One wrote:Just to clarify any doubts to those that are appalled or emotionally-distressed about the opinions that I have expressed…
