** David 'Destroyer' Lopez Shot Dead in Mexico

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

The pattern of violence continues in Mexico, as another boxer has been killed by a shower of bullets.

Two weeks ago, Mexico was in mourning when the older brother of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was shot and killed by robbers.

Now the Mexican boxing community is once again in mourning after hearing the unfortunate news about the murder of Sonoran boxer David "Destroyer" Lopez, in an incident which occurred in his native Nogales, Sonora.

According to Nuevo Dia, the terrible event arose just before midnight on Thursday, when the boxer and a companion were traveling in a recent model truck and they were attacked by a shower of bullets from heavily armed subjects in the La Brisa colony.

When police arrived at the scene, the authorities realized that two people were inside the vehicle and they had been attacked. Lopez was already dead, so immediately the Red Cross paramedics provided care to his seriously injured companion.

Lopez began his boxing career in 1995, and his achievements that stand out include winning the WBC Latin championship and the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE).

The most important fight for "Destroyer" Lopez was presented to him on June 11, 2011, when he faced Austin Trout for the World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight world championship, and Trout retained his belt with a twelve round unanimous decision.

Lopez's last fight was held two years ago when he lost a split decision to American boxer Paul Mendez. "Destroyer" left his mark on boxing with 42 fights wins, 16 losses, 1 draw and 24 of the victories came by knockout.

Besides facing Trout, Lopez faced a variety of good boxers throughout his career and he was also considered to be a spoiler.

He shocked the undefeated records of Aubrey Sibanyoni, Michael Walker, Jerson Ravelo and Lonnie Bradley. And also defeated veterans Julio Cesar Garcia, Michel Rosales, Saul Roman, Ossie Duran, Danny Perez, Fernando Zuniga, Epifanio Mednoza and Rocky Montoya.

He also faced Marcos Reyes, Jose Uzcategui and Donovan George (which ended in a draw).

A shame... I've known many boxers who were shot to death. The best was Tyrone Everett -- killed in the '70's at the peak of his career when he was 24.

Everett was the slickest and smoothest 126-130 pounder I've ever seen. He was 36-1 when he died but robbed blind in his lone loss in a World Title Fight with Alfredo Escalara.. He easily won 12 of 15 rounds and there wasn't a person in the arena who didn't believe Everett won. When Escalara was awarded the decision everyone was dumbfounded cept the crooks who fixed the judges. Fixer Blinky Palermo bragged "You could buy [judge] Lou Tress for a cup of coffee."

Others shot and killed are: Alexis Arguello, Vernon Forrest, Oscar Bonavena, Hector Camacho, Battling Siki, Frankie DePaula, Freddie Mills, Stanley Ketchel, O'Neil Bell -- and many unknown boxers like Ed Brown, Mike Tracy, Telly Pridgett, Ronny Vargas, Victorius Smith -- and it just seems like a lot of boxers die of gun violence.. It's usually not connected to Boxing -- It's just the areas they live in there's a lot of gun violence.

Dang....I grew up watching a bunch of his fights on ESPN. He was a solid fringe-contender.
