In his first reign - Muhammed Ali''s final WBC/WBA/Linear defence was March 1967. He didn't fight again for 2 and a half years until late 1970, when he technically defended his Lineal title twice before meeting the new WBC/WBA champion Joe Frazier in 1971.

Ali still went in as Linear champ, people's champ, and "true" champ..... despite Frazier having picked-up and unified both governing body belts.
Hi T.M.K

Actually Ali gave up his lineal title when he officially announced his retirement on 3rd February 1970. He did so in order to let his pal, Jimmy Ellis, fight Joe Frazier for the undisputed title.

Little did Ali know that he would be back in business himself a few months later. So in hindsight obviously his retirement announcement was premature.

His comback contests against Quarry and Bonavena were both scheduled for the 15 rounds championship distance though, so I suppose a case could be made for them being lineal title fights.

Also, Frazier was not recognised as lineal champion until he beat Ali in 1971.

Good to see that Boxrec recognises Tyson Fury as the current lineal champion.

Which clearly illustrates how ridiculous the lineal championship subject can be. Jabba the Pizza Slut is boxing's lineal clown at this point. He could end up the GOAT of boxing clowns if he continues snorting and gorging in that direction.

lineal must be fury. its awkward as at some point michael spinks was lineal champ when tyson was undisputed champ. foreman took the lineal title and lost it to briggs. and in other weight divisions it has been even more convoluted.
so joshua is active, undefeated, and has 2 belts of the 4. he must be recognised as the no. 1 active fighter. fury is lineal. if joshua took out wilder he would have to be recognised as champ if fury hadnt fought in the mean time.

Do you think your comments are funny?

You can't really be revelling in the state of his career, can you?

No, others are "revelling in the state of his career." I am doing a public service by doing my part to hopefully piss him off enough to get off the cocaine and pizza pie diet, social media, and his prodigious ass, and get back to work.

You are all welcome. :OhYes:

Everyone loses their sh!t over the Lineal Heavyweight Championship and thinks this makes them hardcore true boxing fans who are somehow defenders of the history and tradition of the sport (myself included tbh) but how many here, without google, can follow any lineage for any of the other seven traditional weight divisions? How many can even list the first champion in the line of any other division without google?

My point is that in every other division we are happy to anoint "The Man" as the guy recognised as the best or in the case of middleweight, the guy who has a direct line to the last time there was an undisputed number one (Hopkins - Taylor - Pavlik - Martinez - Cotto - Canelo) which has nothing to do with tracing a line back to the year dot.

Go ahead Ossy, tell us who is a bigger clown than Jabba in boxing at the moment. He is a self made joke. When / if he becomes other than a clown act, I will be more than happy to give him credit for it.

How long does one have to be inactive/supsended before they are no longer considered the man in the division?

Fury is over 18months out the ring, had annpunced his retirement, failed drugs tests etc but by man ly is considered the man.

If we are going on lineage surely it ended when lewis retired and started a new line when wlad was considered lineal? Hardly a long historic lineage.

He is ring magazine champ on paper but again he has broken all their rules about defending it. If he comes back and that belt is on the line it makes a disgrace of it imo.

Well, here's a few examples for you:
James J Corbett did not defend the title for 3 years and 2 months between the Charley Mitchell and Bob Fitzsimmons fights.
Jess Willard was inactive for 3 years 4 months between the Frank Moran and Jack Dempsey contests.
Muhammad Ali was an inactive lineal champion for almost 3 years because his licence was suspended. Ali also remained the Ring Magazine champion during that period.
So Fury has a way to go yet.
