Yarde - Benn Comparisons

OK, there's no comparison but on the other hand there's a load of comparisons.

For those of you old enough to remember the rise of Nigel Benn (we're so lucky - we had Eubank & others too).

Anyway, what do you make of Yarde v Benn's early exploits?

Benn was a lot more exciting because he threw 100 punches in the first 2 minutes. Yarde is so much more measured.

But who has better knockout power?

I wasn't around for Benn and haven't watched much of him, but I've caught several of Yarde's fights.

He looks powerful, shows good poise for someone who only had 12 amateur fights (doesn't have that unpolished look many of the late starters have), and mixes his attack well. However, he's been a can crusher so far (only 3 opponents with winning records and none of them any good), and has only shown abilities as the guy in command. Maybe he's so good that he'll be able to make it far before he's pushed, but given the poor opposition I wouldn't say that's clear yet.

And is he really 6'0"? He's very bulky, and if he is that tall I don't know how he makes 175. Seems like a guy who could show stamina problems as the opposition sticks around longer and makes him fight harder....

About ten years ago he was coming through like the new Roy Jones, then he fought Courtney Fry - he gassed and got stopped.

He went from looking a million dollars in round one to a bundle of twigs in six rounds.

Hopefully Yarde passes his gut check when it comes.

Yards needs a step up badly. He looks good but his opposition has been awful. That Baranyi guy was 18-1 but the reality was he was terrible - just look at his other fights on YouTube. Yarde needs maybe former European title challengers who are a bit durable or even some decent British guys. That way he can get some rounds in. The current EBU-EU champ Serhiy Demchenko looks a good shout. Fought at a good level, only been stopped once m, statistically poor record but coming off a good win.

What about Yarde vs current commonwealth champ Callum Johnson? (16-0 (11kos)). Good fight for Yarde in maybe 2/3 fights.

Yeah great talent was Salem. My fear with Yarde is he goes from fighting knockovers (current opposition) to someone very decent and able to avoid his bombs and take him deep. Better he gets some better opposition now and step up gradually so when he faces a real challenge it's not such a big bridge in levels. With that much muscle I think it's important his Management get him some durable opposition and see what he's like later in a fight rather than getting found out in his first real test.

I love Benn's style, he was like a street fighter.

Yarde for me should have been fighting for English this year, still got time but there's doubts. He needs someone like Easton just fought, not as good or powerful, but respectable technically and extremely tough. I'd love the Buglioni, Burton, Johnson match ups to come but I'd be surprised if any of them jump in with him.

Who is Johnson fighting next, I'm sure I heard he was rumoured to be in with someone decent.

I'm quite looking forward to seeing someone actually hit yarde see how he copes with a good smack on the nose, terrible opposition so far but doubt he will be tested for a while yet.

I think his much vaunted power is overrated. He's landed plenty of flush shots in his past couple of fights and hasn't kept his opposition on the canvas.

I also wonder if the lactic acid build up in those biceps might prove problematic.

But I like him and hope he succeeds.

Let's not forget Benn failed his first big test, too. Michael Watson broke his heart, but Benn became stronger for it, because he really had steel, and he learned and developed from that defeat, rather than falling apart. Honestly, I knew Watson would beat him, and I thought that would be it; he'd never be the same. It's that ability to get up and come back that defines Benn, more than his punch or his style, for me.
