Ohara Davies: I Didn't Quit With Josh Taylor, I Couldn't Breathe

Ohara Davies (15-1, 12 KOs) suffered his first career defeat when he was stopped in the seventh round in a high stakes fight with rising junior welterweight star Josh Taylor of Scotland.

Davies was down twice in the fight before the contest was waved off in the seventh round.

It was an unexpected outcome, as many saw the contest as a 50-50 encounter and some were even picking the talkative Davies to win.

A few days later, some experts are now wondering if Davies made a mistake by taking a fight like this so soon in his career and traveling over to the opponent's backyard.

Davies, who prior to the fight had labeled Taylor as 'a bum,' has no regrets.

"If I could turn time back, I would still take that fight over and over again," Davies told Sky Sports. "No matter how many times I get offered a fight like that, I will always say yes.

"My dream hasn't gone. I've still got a goal, I've still got ambition. We've still got big fights there ahead. But I don't regret anything that I've done, because everything that I've done makes me the man I am now. I'm a better man now than I was five or six years ago. You've got to take the bitter with the sweet. Not everything in life can go how I want it to go. It's just life."

Davies also denied any and all claims that he quit in the contest. After Davies was dropped hard in the seventh, Taylor quickly moved in for the kill - and then Davies turned his back, which gave a sure signal that he was done - and also prompted the referee to quickly jump in to protect him from further harm.

"People think that I just didn't want to fight, that I lost heart, and I quit," said Davies. "What happened was, I took a shot and then all of a sudden I couldn't breathe. Not through one of my nostrils, but through both of them. I literally couldn't breathe, so that is why it happened. I was getting beat anyway, so I'm not going to use that as an excuse either. I'm going to take this loss as a man."

No one can say for certain whether Ohara Davies could or couldn’t breathe, apart from the man himself. So I’ll assume that he’s being honest about his claims, rather than assuming that he’s simply attempting to downplay the nature of his defeat.

Perhaps his nose was damaged and his nostrils blocked with thick syrupy blood, but this is a moot point anyway, since he felt like he couldn’t continue, due to the fact that he was well-beaten by the better man.

Ohara Davies technically “quit”, regardless as to whether his reasons were legitimate or not.

The thing is… 'Two Tanks' got badly exposed against Josh Taylor and future opponents will no longer buy-into the hype that was previously generated by Matchroom and Sky Sports.

Even though Davies is fairly young, his amateur experience is almost non-existent (only 18 fights I believe) and I feel that it may be too late for him to learn his craft to the point that he will be considered a world-class operator. I really don’t believe that Tony Sims is capable of transforming Ohara’s skill levels significantly.

Instead, I feel that he’ll languish at domestic or even European level for the remainder of his career, unless Eddie Hearn can strategically manoeuvre the trash-talking media-friendly Brit towards a fight against an anonymous and unheralded “alphabet” world titleholder.

Whatever happens, Ohara Davies will almost certainly lose against any durable skilful boxer that possesses a half-decent engine, whilst failing to be intimidated by his trash-talking antics.

He showed plenty of heart, he lacks the talent and skills to compete with taylor. gave his best, no need for excuses or explanations.

Last time i checked you can also breathe through your mouth. I think the hook that dropped him broke his nose and that was enough for him to call it a day. He shoukd retire.

Nobody knows if he could breath or not. All we know is that he quit.
