Pacquiao says he hasn’t been paid yet either

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

I posted an article a few days ago about Roach saying he hasn't been paid from Pacman..

Below is Senator Manny Pacquiao’s official statement regarding Freddie Roach’s allegation that he has not yet been paid:

“I have no problem with Coach Freddie Roach. I’m not the one paying him, it’s Bob Arum. The trainer’s fee is automatically deducted by Top Rank from my purse. So, if Coach Freddie has not yet received his payment, we are in the same boat. My purse has not yet been released by Arum.”

Good post. As a fan, I was wondering how these payments break out and I always thought that the highly paid fighters typically get their money after all of the numbers get tabulated weeks after a fight. I'm sure Manny gets all sorts of percentage points on the total take so for Roach to come out so early bitching about his stupid pay check seemed premature and ridiculous. Roach's prestige is on the way out now. He's showing his true colors.

Don't some boxers get a guaranteed amount on the day of the fight? Usually the base rate before adding ppv revenue etc. I assumed that Pacman would have, but I don't know. Whether Roach gets a percentage from that. Again like you said, it's something I wonder too as a fan.

I think that most fighters on any particular card get paid the night of but the big stars like Floyd don't get their money until their lawyers rip into the gate's numbers and fight for every cent due to their client. Numbers just aren't available until well after a fight. But there is guarantee money that i'm sure is negotiable up front or the day of. I think the earlier you get money, the less you actually get.

I can't wait for Enlightened One's response to this, after all the BS he stated in the other thread. I won't hold my breath though for him to admit he was wrong.

Under normal circumstances, there isn’t a business or contractual relationship between a promoter and a fighter’s trainer.

The promoter usually pays the boxers agreed upon purses regardless of winning or losing.

When the boxer receives his purse money, he must then give his manager, trainer, cutmen and other people their share.

There is no reason (unless there was prior agreement) for a wealthy man like Pacquiao to not compensate Freddie Roach immediately for the work that he’s performed.

It is abundantly clear that Freddie Roach was expecting to receive his money from Manny Pacquaio, regardless as to whether the Filipino has been paid or not, since his contractual relationship is with his fighter, not Bob Arum.

I personally doubt that Bob Arum is legally responsible for compensating Freddie Roach for all of his efforts. Manny is almost certainly contractually liable for this duty.

I only read Pacquiao’s response to Roach’s claims after I submitted my previous response, but there are two facts that cannot be refuted, which are: Manny hasn’t spoken to his trainer and nor has he paid him either.

As far as whether the two have spoken personally, who gives a shit. They spoke after the fight, and Roach told Manny to give it a week before making any decisions on his future. Enlightened One STILL claims that Manny is the one that directly pays Roach, and thought public shaming would help, and how pathetic it was that he hasn't paid Roach. I would think if that is true, it would have been done. Once again, below is Manny's statement. Like I said before, I won't hold my breath. All he will say is that there must have been a prior agreement that he wasn't aware of.

Statement from Michael Koncz:

Koncz expresses shock over Roach’s claim

By Nick Giongco

Mike Koncz, the Canadian adviser of Manny Pacquiao, yesterday called the attention of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach on the issue of the alleged non-payment of his professional fee following the Jeff Horn fight last week in Brisbane, Australia. “For the last five years, we have instructed our promoter to deduct said payment from our guaranteed purse and this is how our corner has been paid,” said Koncz yesterday after an article on Sports Illustrated reported that Roach has yet to collect his payment.

“If Freddie had some concern, he should have brought it up with Manny and not in the media,” said Koncz, noting that the fee of conditioning coach Justin Fortune and cutman Miguel Diaz also get theirs from the promoter.

Koncz said Pacquiao has a payment scheme that sees to it that Roach and the others receive theirs from the promoter.

“That’s how we pay them the last five years,” he said.

You didn't read my carefully-articulated words closely enough. I simply described the "normal" situation and also included a couple of caveats.

By the way, can we not have this discussion on one thread?

Maybe Manny already borrowed his purse and is waiting on residual monies. Not that Arum isn't capable, but Pac is a spending/gambling machine. You never know.

Roach's statement was stupid. You don't trash the loyal friend who's put millions of dollars in your bank account. "He hasn't paid me. I don't know if he's mad at me. He won't even talk to me or say hi to me." He made Manny out to be a cold hearted skinflint and ingrate. I would have a problem with a long time associate who went to the media with an untrue story like that. Pacquiao is being too kind. Probably making allowances for Roach's grasp on reality.

Roach is an incredibly overrated trainer, thanks to Manny. If anyone owes the other money it's Roach. The poster child for a disease giving you the pass to be a complete cock to most of the public. He was an entertaining pug, downhill since then.

It's a one trick and pony show.
