Jamie McDonnell vs. Liborio Solis II - 4 November 2017

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Terms have been agreed for the rematch between Liborio Solis and Jamie McDonnell ordered by the WBA for the Bantamweight title. McDonnell won a Unanimous Decision against Solis in Monte Carlo at the end of 2016. Many saw it as controversially scored and the WBA ordered the rematch when the Paul Butler bout could not be made. Reports suggest the bout is likely to take place in Yorkshire and his brother Gavin will also fight on the card.

Another bout that Eddie Hearn has confirmed is Kal Yafai (22-0) defending his WBA Super-Flyweight title against his mandatory Sho Ishida (24-0). Ishida was the Japanese champion but Yafai will be a big step up for him and has to be the heavy favorite given how he has performed in winning and defending his title.

Me too. Credit to McDonnell for taking this - would have been easy to swerve it, I suspect.

Not without vacating the title I'm pretty sure the WBA ordered it after reviewing the first fight

Wonder if they will put this on Monaco card in November as that gives it World Title on the bill.

Strange because Jamie's been in excellent fights (Hall, Ceja, Kameda 1st fight and Solis as well) and does the twelve round distance better than anyone in the UK

It's a joke how inactive Jamie has been. It will be nearly a year since the first solis fight when this happens. He hasn't been injured either.

They waited for ages though for Paul Butler date - they agreed terms with FW for him to fight on BN.

Eventually they had to move on as did Paul Butler who I can only presume wasn't very happy either hence departure from FW.

Any news on this yet? Been a fan of Jamies since he won the Euro title (can't believe that was 7 years ago).

Funny but back when I was growing up & watching boxing in the 70's & 80's, a fighter like McDonnell would have been a household name. Kind of.... Like Duke McKenzie was. Kind of :maybe:

But he's undefeated in almost a decade (21 bouts) and has won British, European, Commonwealth, IBF & WBA world titles & made five defences including two against a very highly rated Japanese (adopted Mexican) overseas.

He just doesn't seem to get the respect his record deserves, to me.

I feel like there's something about him or the way that he's promoted which makes it easy to forget about him. He's definitely got a respectable record....

I presume it is trickier because if I remember rightly he has no interest in boxing, so whereas Matchroom can get out almost all of their other fighters as pundits/co-commentators at some point there is very little they can do with him unless his brother is fighting.

Agree with someone earlier though, I've really enjoyed his career from around the Ian Nappa fight, shame lately he's been inactive.

I agree, his acheivments seem to have flown under the radar, got to respect a non puncher that can still get the job done over 12 at world level

McDonnell/Solis is Nov 4th in Monto Carlo.

Yafai was going to be Chief Support for AJ in Vegas but must still be planned for that show whenever it happens or else if it was Brum then Eggington wouldn't be on in Liverpool.

Should be a good fight, both guys need to do more than they did last fight, I had McDonnell nicking the 1st fight by a point, remember him nicking a lot of the rounds at the end of them, most people did have Solis winning though and McDonnell is gonna have to start fast for a change, neither guy has fought since their fight, both guys should be fresh, both they should well up for it and both know they need to prove a point, I can see this going to the wire again with McDonnell getting it on the cards after another hard fought scrap

I think Solis will be even hungrier tomorrow night. Maybe not enough for a stoppage.. Potentially could see a knockdown.. Hope so.

I think McDonnell will get another close one on points.
It’s his last fight at BW. How he made it for so long is beggars belief.
Disappointing recent reign IMO. Don’t forget he’s only the WBA regular champion. Not been a ‘proper’ world champion recently.

Should of gone after Warren or Haskins during his reign for a full title.

Also gutted he can’t make weight anymore as him against Burnett would of been a good fight.

See, I don't understand, how long does a boxer need to hold the regular title before challenging the super champion? Doesn't the WBA eventually mandate it?

There was discussions for him to Fight Rigo at Super Bant last year, after Rigo broke Dickens' jaw. Maybe that fight could happen.

Held loads of discussion with Raushee Warren but fight never got made and WBA never enforced it.
