Luis Ortiz Manager: Joshua Must Face Us Next, Not Klitschko!
WBA mandatory challenger Luis "King Kong" Ortiz (27-0) is fully recovered from a hand injury suffered while training for his aborted April fight against Derric Rossy. The fight was supposed to be his debut fighting under Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions' banner.
A few weeks after Ortiz's injury, IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua got off the canvas to stop Wladimir Klitschko in 11 rounds to add the vacant WBA and IBO belts to his collection.
Klitschko is contractually entitled to a rematch but Ortiz's team insists that their mandatory status takes precedence over the rematch clause.
Ortiz's manager Jay Jimenez said that they can speak to whomever they desire but that in the event that Klitschko decides to come back for a rematch, Joshua must face Ortiz first.
"He can meet with them all he wants but I know when we spoke to Jorge Carmenate (President of Dade Promotions, Ortiz's promoter) he stated that in a letter from the WBA - there is a contractual agreement from the WBA - and if they break it we will win a lawsuit and expose the WBA for violating the Muhammad Ali act for intentionally hurting a boxer's career," said Jimenez.
Jimenez said that Ortiz is working hard but admits that his fighter is frustrated by the lack of headway being made in securing a title shot.
"Luis has been training hard since last month and he will come in his best shape ever but he's becoming frustrated with the WBA hold up," Jimenez told BS.com.

The WBA could have him fight Oquendo for the regular WBA title.

Eddie Hearn has previously confirmed that Antony Joshua has already been given the green light by the WBA to skip mandatory challenger Luis Ortiz in order to engage in the Klitschko rematch.

That would be a sensible solution.RScarf1 wrote:The WBA could have him fight Oquendo for the regular WBA title.

Blah, blah, blah.

After his last two showings.

IMO, anyone who sues WBA to get a title shot (i.e. Oquendo) should just fight Luis Ortiz for the title. Like... "here you go. Is this what you wanted?"
Re: Luis Ortiz Manager: Joshua Must Face Us Next, Not Klitschko!
There's a lot of crap going on in Boxing and it never ends... Ortiz is not going to get his shot until he's 40... That's the way it is.
Gary Russell is not going to get fights with any of the top Latino Featherweights. Or Carl Frampton or Lee Selby.
Garcia vs Broner get favored over Garcia vs Lomachenko

I'm surprised people actually picked that they want to see Ortiz/Joshua. Poll should be zero considering how awful Ortiz has looked. He doesn't deserve a fight, and he would be dominated by Joshua.

As long as the evidence aint there, he got the right to prove people wrong.Mexi-Box wrote:I'm surprised people actually picked that they want to see Ortiz/Joshua. Poll should be zero considering how awful Ortiz has looked. He doesn't deserve a fight, and he would be dominated by Joshua.
Fury was also expected to lose against Klitschko, but he won fair.

Actually, I was one who thought Fury had a chance. I gave Klitschko the edge, but Fury's talent definitely was there the whole time. People only hated on Fury because of his antics. Ortiz has seriously looked horrendous.asdfjkl wrote:As long as the evidence aint there, he got the right to prove people wrong.Mexi-Box wrote:I'm surprised people actually picked that they want to see Ortiz/Joshua. There was a sizable minority going for Fury, or at least giving him a good shot. I remember handsofstone saying Fury would outbox him for a decision, and me suggesting that it was very unlikely

Well, beating Jennings, in significantly less time as Klitschko did, tells me he was one of the best heavyweights out there, especially at the time. And I remember that Jennings also seemed to prefere to avoid him.

Are you sure he isn’t already older than forty?Kalan wrote:There's a lot of crap going on in Boxing and it never ends... Ortiz is not going to get his shot until he's 40... That's the way it is.
I know what is “official” age is (he claims to only be 38 years old), but he looks an awful lot older than that!
The Cuban’s age has even become a running joke on the iFLT TV YouTube channel (from interviews with several fellow boxers) and also for the Sky Sports pundits, because they’ve all commented on how old he actually looks. Even Eddie Hearn has commented on his seemingly premature aging.
I also feel that Ortiz’s most recent lacklustre performances against the likes of Jennings, Scott & Allen indicated a trend that suggested that he’s already on the decline (perhaps due to his advanced years), which is unusual for a heavyweight fighter that had not previously been tested since he made his pro debut almost seven years ago.
