Anthony Ogogo Registered Blind After Fracturing Eye Socket
Anthony Ogogo still has aspirations of becoming a world champion –– despite being registered blind.
The London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist was advised by several eye specialists to hang up his boxing gloves in the wake of fracturing his left eye socket.
But the 27-year-old, who suffered the injury on the same night as his first defeat last October at the hands of Craig Cunningham, is keen to make a return to the squared circle and fulfil some of the potential he carried into the paid ranks after the Olympics five years ago.
“I was told that by having my eye operated on that I could make it even worse,” Ogogo told the Lowestoft Journal.
“I said: ‘I don’t care – I want to be a boxer that much.’ It’s been the worst six months of my life but I can see light at the end of the tunnel.” Ogogo has undergone two operations on his left eye after fracturing the socket in eight places, but he could yet be forced under the knife once more in a bid to resurrect his ring career.
“I was actually technically blind – I wasn’t allowed to drive – they took my licence away,” he continued.
“The double vision I had was so severe that I was registered blind. If I had applied for a blue badge I would have got it. “I went to go and see 10 different eye experts to get to the bottom of the problem. It was such a bad eye injury, but I need to do this.
“I want that hard living. I want to go back to [the aforementioned Craig] Cunningham’s backyard and bash him up in front of his own fans –– the same ones that were booing me and calling me names.
“Whether you like me or loathe me, you’ve got to respect me and what I’ve been through. I know I can get to the top.”

I'm not a massive fan but I'm no hater. He did really well to medal in London, but he's had a lot of injury that's stalled him enough that he is no longer in the public eye whilst other prospects have overtaken him. He's resorted to a bit of trash talk of opponents he's not ready for. To stay in the public eye I guess.
Hope the guy gets a break injury wise

He's had a terrible time with injuries. the way he got bashed up by Cunningham, personally if it was me I think I'd be taking that as a sign to try something else.
His body aint designed for the rigours of a pro career and that sounds like a really serious injury he's had to the eye socket there, how easy could that be injured and damaged again in a pro ring? is it worth the risk?

There's no chance he'll win a world belt. Too injury prone and not good enough. Good luck to him though.

He seems like a nice kid but he hasn't shown anything that makes me believe he is good enough to challenge for domestic titles, let alone worlds.
That eye injury sounds nasty, I appreciate his commitment to get back in the ring but I fear he will probably end up regretting it if he does.

Really nice fella. Hugely over-achieved in London in a real tough weight-class.
Unfortunately as a pro his body has let him down. I like him as a pundit. Maybe BN could use him for their amateur and WSB shows. His amateur international experience is top draw.

What did he actually do well as a fighter?
He had average speed, hands up, plod forward, take shots on the arms, throw out inaccurate jabs and 1-2s. Really not a lot there

He had good boxing fundamentals but about 8 fights in 5 years is no way for a rookie professional to develop, especially when half of that time you've been out of the gym nursing an injury. It's fair to say he hasn't developed after the olympics. Look how the active olympians have come on, Saunders etc

He's injury prone it's a shame for the lad cos it must be so frustrating. I think the lad has some talent and it's shame about the eye I hope his health is ok first and let's not slate the kid he could be blind through boxing and I bet boxing will give him fook all in return

The eubanks' and anyone else deriding kell Brook and others for 'quitting' should take note of this.
