Paying to see somebody lose
I have always questioned this notion. I watched plenty of fights hoping somebody gets battered/schooled but actually paying for the privilege of that. I can't think of any fight I have done that for. It's an often used phrased for some of boxing#s most controversial characters but I was just wondering how much truth there is it as far as Boxrec is concerned.
Have any of you bought PPV/event tickets just to see a particular fighter lose?
Come to think of it. I can't recall if Vitali v Williams was PPV but if it was I paid for that to see Williams get flattened as he was behaving a bit to disrespectfully towards Tyson after his tainted win. Bellew kinda reminded me of Williams and I'm duly hoping one of the heavyweights gives him something similar.

I've been to a few Khan fights in the hope he got chinned, got my wish with Prescott.
Re: Paying to see somebody lose
I've rooted for people to lose, but I've never bought a fight just to see somebody lose. Usually when I've bought fights it was because I either really wanted to see some Boxing or because I was a huge fan of the dude in the Main Events.

Don't agree - he's got a massive ghetto style following, there was a huge pimped up crowd at the Hatton fight when I saw it.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Only reason Mayweather is rich..

Also you get the glory hunters that love to follow a winner.
I once took out this girl who was half English, Half Italian.... i asked what team she supported in Football... she said 'Brazil'... 'Because they are the best'. I quickly lost respect for her

I Was thinking this about Ohara Davies. Most people I have spoke to about him all wanted to see him chinned but now that this has happened so early on in his career what way does he go now

The same way as before the Taylor fight. He came up against someone really really special. Won't affect him.smiling assassin wrote:I Was thinking this about Ohara Davies. Sorry boys I didn't make my point clear. Of course he can come back from the loss, I was referring to the point of how does he sell himself now as he was playing massively on making people not like himOiky wrote:I agree, ODs career isn't over cos of that lossjaymitch81 wrote:The same way as before the Taylor fight. He can sell himself the same way. The Taylor loss doesn't change that.smiling assassin wrote:Sorry boys I didn't make my point clear. Most people have contribute to Floyd Mayweather being the biggest money maker in combat sport just based on there hate for him. He has got
over so much on the fan that gets fooled each time that someone will beat him.

Re: Paying to see somebody lose
What exactly is the evidence that 'haters' primarily fund Floyd? I'm sure some people buy the PPVs because they dislike him and thus want him to lose, but how are you concluding just how many people that is?
He also has loads of black fans, his name became very recognizable after beating Oscar, and things have gotten to the point where his fights become 'events' for people to take in.

Re: Paying to see somebody lose
Yes he does but its majority. He needs a demographic opposite of him to help him see Oscar, Hatton, Conor, Alvarez. Haters put money in his pocket more than his fans. This Conor fight proves that. If this is a forgone conclusion like most think, then the only reason to buy it for most is what people keep getting caught with the pants down thinking it will be exciting and it never is.crusader wrote:What exactly is the evidence that 'haters' primarily fund Floyd? I paid to see Floyd lose from Cotto onwards except the Berto fight because I hate wife beaters
And I paid for Bomber Haye because I just wanted David to shut him up...

Re: Paying to see somebody lose
Schadenfreude rules my world. When I do buy PPV seven or eight times out of ten I buy the fight hoping to see some probably perfectly decent chap who I've taken an irrational dislike to beaten up. I know that the fighter who I've taken a dislike to wants me to buy the fight but the logical side of my brain which knows that the best way to express dislike of a fighter is to ignore him thus hurting him in the pocket is overruled by my desire to see primitive justice handed down.
The last fight I attended live was the BJS v Andy Lee fight which I found hard to enjoy as I thought both of them were thoroughly decent blokes but if memory serves Liam Smith was on the same bill and I'd happily pay money to watch any of the Smith bros lose although in fairness I find it hard to dislike any of them personally except for Paul.

Not true, the casual fans like him and didn't mind his fights. Like being a Duke fan, riding the winner.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Only reason Mayweather is rich..

Even more than black fans, younger white hiphop kids adored him. the hate is from the hardcore fan base. Often times beyond irrational.crusader wrote:What exactly is the evidence that 'haters' primarily fund Floyd? I think you guys are overrating how many like Floyd, some only defend because its so much hate towards him sometimes not even being a fan.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Even more than black fans, younger white hiphop kids adored him. the hate is from the hardcore fan base. I've never done that before, but if Charlie Edwards v Prince Patel had ever been made I'd have been tempted!

No, I've seen it myself. You're just having a hard time differentiating between Boxing fans and the people that buy Floyd's fights. I watched hundreds of casuals cheer wildly for him against Judah.world ranked wrote:I think you guys are overrating how many like Floyd, some only defend because its so much hate towards him sometimes not even being a fan.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Even more than black fans, younger white hiphop kids adored him. the hate is from the hardcore fan base. That's Judah and how long ago was that. Since then he hasn't been a fan favorite in any fight.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:No, I've seen it myself.
