"Jessie Vargas Says Conor McGregor Was KO'd During Sparring for Floyd Mayweather"

While Conor McGregor spent the last week going toe to toe with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on the microphone, former world champion Jessie Vargas cast further doubt on whether McGregor can hang with Mayweather in the ring.

In an interview with Villainfy Media, Vargas said McGregor got knocked out during a sparring session in preparation for his Aug. 26 bout with Mayweather.

It doesn't make any difference to me how he's been sparring. I don't see how he's anywhere near Floyd's level. This 'fight' doesn't interest me in the slightest

Secondhand information. That's like saying I heard he got knocked out with pillows.

Sparring is sparring. It means nothing usually. Though I can't say I would be surprised if it's true. He isn't a boxer. Stepping in there with guys who've been boxing for years (guys who will be begrudging him this pay day) they'll be looking for it, and to show this MMA upstart why he isn't a boxer. I'm not sure Mayweather will knock him out, but I'm convinced he might stop him on his feet, 6/7 rounds in Floyd is going to be tattooing this guy for fun. His shots don't break the guard, he isn't as fast, he doesn't have the skills and he isn't as experienced as Floyd. It's a cash grab, it's all it's ever been. He'll go back to MMA and continue his career after with little or no effect to his regard there and that will be that.

People talk about the UfC competing with boxing, but is it damaging that their star went to boxing to earn the big money?

Brandon Rios has denied it. Don't be gullible. Always take sparring stories with a pinch of salt.

He would deny it even if it was true. Though of course that doesn't make it true.

I do wonder what on earth he's doing sparring Brandon Rios when he's fighting Floyd Mayweather?

No, actually I don't. Though if the rumour is he sparked him I assume they're at least sparring? Worst rumour of all time if they're not even sparring.

The only thing about this fight I was looking forward to was the press conferences ect, but even that seems too much like a stage managed circus... Not remotely interested.

I personally doubt the rumour to be true, since I'd expect any of Conor's sparring partners to have to agree to a strict gagging order, which is something that Paulie Malignaggi explained when he was asked to spar against McGregor (whether that was self-imposed or otherwise, the interview where he stated this strongly-suggested the latter).

However, I can't say that I've been that impressed with the sparring footage that I've seen that involved the UFC fighter, so him getting KO'd (or at least hurt) by "someone" (probably not Brandon Rios, but maybe someone unheralded) he was boxing inside the gym, where it wasn't publicly-disclosed, wouldn't surprise me at all. :TU:

I created this thread because of the sheer volume of the media articles that have been published about this rumour within the last 24-hours, which I thought would interest some of you guys.

On the back of the recent rumours about Conor McGregor being KO’d during sparring, it appears that the Irishman has decided against bringing in Paulie Malignaggi as a sparring partner, which I think is pretty damn interesting! :o

"Video: Malignaggi unsure if Conor McGregor still wants to spar him to prepare for Floyd Mayweather"

Paulie Malignaggi says he has yet to hear back again from Conor McGregor about bringing him in as a sparring partner.

Earlier in the month, news broke that Conor McGregor would be bringing in former Paulie Malignaggi as a sparring partner as he prepares for Floyd Mayweather. The two-division boxing champ has gone on record to say that he has accepted the offer. Malignaggi says despite past smack talk through the media, he is looking forward to being a “team player” and to help the UFC champion get better.

McGregor also said during the start of his world press tour that Malignaggi will “answer to what he’s been saying” about him, and is looking forward to having a “knock in the gym” when they spar.

Just this past weekend though, Malignaggi said he has yet to hear back from the McGregor camp again, and isn’t sure if it pushes through.

“I havent done any work with Conor,” Malignaggi told Fight Hub. “They've done alot of talking as far as bringing me in but I'm not sure if they will. It’s up to them really, it’s not up to me.

“If they wanna bring me in, we've spoken. If they do they do. If they don’t, it doesnt matter, I'll be there ringside either way,” he said.

Wouldn't be surprised if he did get KOed. Mayweather isn't really a KO guy. But, I'll be surprised if Conor hears the final bell. I think the skill disparity will be so great that either the ref will have to save Conor or Conor will get KOed.

You should use some discretion when you post shiit and people will take you a bit more seriously. You are the Inquirer of this website. In the off topic section you probably post some links where Bigfoot was reportedly seen driving an ice cream truck at Venice Beach. Give it a rest man. The whole report is a joke. Brandon Rios is freaking idiot and that's where the story came from? Give me a break. Bunch of jealous boxers risking their lives for peanuts compared to what these two are fighting for. Of course it's garbage. Use your head for once.

So you attacked me for an opinion that I hadn't even articulated yet, but when I pointed this out to you, you then decided to attack me for simply posting one of the dozens of articles detailing a story that is being widely-reported by loads of media sources.

If you're intent is to attack me (regardless the situation), even if I simply quote someone else's words, then why don't you ignore my posts instead?

Why didn't you bother to read my opinion on the matter prior to attacking me?

IMO, there is nothing improper about this thread. This story is actually trending like a real news story. It'd be ridiculous if there was no discussion about it on boxrec while everyone's grandma is reading all about it.

It was on major news websites like msn.com, but not anymore apparently because the rumor has been proven to be false.

Jesse Vargas is full of crap.. Brandon Rios never met Conor McGregor and obviously never boxed with him.

It's a story started by Bullsh!t artists who are angry this fight is taking place -- between a novice boxer and Mayweather for 100's of millions of dollars... They're angry as Hell and I can see their point.. This fight is a massive exploitation of the naive -- like the "Snake River Canyon Motorcycle Jump." McGregor would be good if he had about 6 or 7 boxing matches first.. But he's got little going fistically so he sparring with guys like Louis Adolphe who is 6-0 and can't really box that well.. Adolphe thinks McGregor is fast, smart, a hard puncher, and a good boxer, but just very unorthodox. Adolphe hasn't boxed anybody who's any good yet.. Saying somebody is unorthodox is like saying he he's got tons of flaws.. wide punches, poor balance, telegraphed delivery, leading with your left if you're a southpaw, that's all unorthodox -- and it doesn't work against anybody who can box real well.

Aldolphe says he wouldn't write McGregor off against Mayweather.. He doesn't really know because he's never boxed with anybody super good and he wouldn't be saying anything negative if he's being paid well by McGregor to spar. Conor will be well conditioned and strong. I'll say that much for him. He's 29 years old and very strong.. If he can just keep Floyd off of him, that will be an accomplishment. Attacking Floyd will be much tougher so it will be interesting.

The source of the story seems to be Jessie Vargas repeating a rumour he heard. So, I have no idea if the story is true, and it's not a story I would run. Jessie Vargas might be a good boxer but that doesn't mean that he is above repeating gossip. In the video he offers no source for the story nor does he state any detail or specifics.

That said, if you watch the video Vargas says that McGregor was knocked out in the sparring. Then he starts joking with Brandon Rios (who is also in the video) that Rios was the one who did it. From the video it's clear that Vargas is joking about Rios being the one who did it. The fact that the story has gotten twisted into "Brandon Rios knocked out McGregor" is just the internet being the internet.

The Mail in the UK are reporting that Bradley Wheeler was the guy who KO'd Conor McGregor during sparring, who is actually an MMA fighter.

The Mail and The Sun (especially on their websites) aren't above repeating bullshit rumours. It's certainly possible that McGregor was knocked out. However I haven't seen a credible story (by usual journalistic standards).

For instance, The Mirror have said of Wheeler...

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/boxing/mc ... r-10816718
...The Notorious was rumoured to have been sparked in preparation for the money fight on August 26 but Mirror Sport understands that is wide of the mark.

Wheeler, a British MMA fighter, has been injured since June 2 after suffering defeat to Matt Inman at Cage Warriors.

A month in a cast due to leg fractures was followed by a further three weeks on crutches, meaning any rumoured sparring session would have been near impossible...
