That’s when I really started getting off. I was so damaged by then, from trying to fight him at mid-range that I couldn’t get off the way I wanted because of how strong he was. But somebody like Canelo is going to be fighting like that from the jump, definitely,”
“If you’re too far away from him, or too close to him, he doesn’t fight well. When you’re right in his wheelhouse, he’s extremely dangerous. Extremely dangerous. He doesn’t fight real good close. And Canelo’s real good in close"
Monroe also said David Lemieux had a good chance because he has so much firepower and Golovkin can be hit. And many people, including Monroe, were predicting Willie would outbox and outmaneuver Golovkin because of his speed, southpaw trickery, and boxing ability. Monroe won 1 round of the 6 and suffered 3 knockdowns, the only KD's of his career. Basically he quit "I'm done." If you watch the video Monroe did a Charles Martin. He kept his gloves on the canvas until the referee said "10" and quickly raised them. However, corrupt Jack Reese still let him continue and he had to verbally refuse.
Golovkin cut the ring off on Monroe and didn't let him maneuver. GGG out-jabbed Monroe.. He jabbed the carp out of Lemieux.. GGG even outjabbed the taller and rangier Daniel Jacobs by a solid margin and I think he'll out-jab Canelo.. Triple-G has very quick feet and he's a great athlete.. He's better than Canelo athletically even at 35.. Canelo is at his peak at 27 years of age today, and when he signed to fight Floyd he was only 22.. Is Canelo the better infighter??? GGG showed great infighting skills versus Curtis Stevens, Gregor Proksa, Marco Rubio, and Martin Murray.
Canelo has over 50 fights and many World Championship Fights. You're talking about a peak Canelo versus a slightly past peak Golovkin who's still in his prime.. Alvarez is one of those rare boxers who gets to fight whoever he wants and turn down fights he doesn't want. This is the fight he wants right now.. In the Jacobs fight Golovkin didn't look particularly invincible.. Before the fight GGG remarked, "If I smash Jacobs Canelo won't fight me. If I struggle to beat him he'll fight me." I believe that thought may have played a part in Golovkin's performance after the knockdown. He had a pretty decent lead at that point in the fight. Curiously, he didn't go after Jacobs very hard following the knockdown like he generally does.
Jacobs is a great Middleweight and to ease up on him would have been batz.. It could easily backfire and hand you a loss.. However, when you've been chasing a Lineal World Title Fight for 7 years with no results, you get a little desperate.. Maybe you have to do something a little different. Whatever 3G's performance in that fight...Jacobs is on record saying Golovkin will beat Canelo.. He's one Hell of a lot better Middleweight than Monroe is.
