Is Darnell Boone one of the best journeymen of this era?

Post by IronFrost »

Knocked out Stevenson.

Knocked down Kovalev and Andre Ward.

Thats pretty impressive for a guy who has 23 wins and 24 loses and only 50% ko ratio

He is shot now, but yes, he was probably the best journeyman. Note that Ward was his 9th fight, and on one of the cards, he only lost by a point. I don't know if Khomitsky qualifies as a journeyman. If he does, he could be a competition for a best journeyman.

I love a good journeyman. A proper journeyman that is a genuine test for prospects. Can't stand it when prospects are brought through (especially in the UK) knocking over random Eastern Europeans. We get told that everyone starts with journeymen, but the shite that we see here aren't even journeymen, they're just bums.

Anyway, the answer to the question is yes.

Boone was entertaining. Lots of good ones. Emmanuel Burton, Kirino Garcia amongst others.

Whenever I hear or think of the word, 'journeyman', I think if Darnell Boone. He's probably the best journeyman.

No he's not... He lacks skills and gets beaten and knocked out too often... He's one of the best known because he floored Ward and knocked Adonis Chickenson out... Better journeymen are: Hank Lundy.. Andrzej Fonfara.. Jhonny Gonzalez.. John Molina.. and guys who generally hang in there. Boone loses to a lot of guys you never heard of and he has little going except he can throw.

Cosme Rivera was a good one. That's one of the biggest things missing today. Fighters used to be hard before they got a title shot, now most test their mettle for belts.

Damned right he is right now... He's no champ... Since Gary Russell roasted him in 3 or 4 rounds like he was a cheap sparring partner -- with several knockdowns and boxing the piss out of him, he's had 7 fights after that and has done well.. But he's not world class anymore at 35 and everyone knows it.

YOU don't... It's a boxer who's a reliable and good performer, but not outstanding... Certainly that applies to Jhonny Gonzalez at age 35... Boone is getting past the journeyman stage, with more losses then wins. He had 1 fight last year and 1 fight this year so he's not in great demand.

Eddie Mazon referred to himself as a "Journeyman Middleweight" in the 1970's.. He had 78 fights in 6 years and quit the business at 24 -- because he found better things to do with his time.. He fit the tag, because promoters used him a lot and he fought anybody, anywhere, at anytime.

Jhonny Gonzales wasn't a journeyman for a career like Boone was. Gonzalez hasn't been a B-side a lot in his career. He was a former world champ and really doesn't fight on the road unless its big fight so he usually is the A-side. Boone always is on the road and picked as a opponent. Jhonny has only been brought in as an opponent in a few cases and hasn't since Mares fight. Russell fight was him defending his title in a pick em fight odds wise.

A journeyman is a boxer who is below the level of a gate keeper, who is below the level of a contender, who is below the level of a champion. Journeymen are usually brought in to be opponents, not the main attraction. Hopefully it's all a bit more clear for you now :TU:

A journeyman fights anyone, anywhere, anywhen. They don't care about winning, only surviving and getting paid for it.

Kalan is deeply confused - and not for the first time.

You're full of crap.. A journeyman cares a lot about winning.. You're talking about a bum who's record is loaded with losses.. A Journeyman is a capable performer, but not outstanding. He'll put up a good fight with anybody and give fans their money's worth.. Tervor Berbick was even referred to as a "journeyman Heavyweight" when he fought Ali.. though he was a future World Champion.

Ross Purritty, Emanuel Augustus, and Darnell Boone are probably the top 3 journeymen of the era.

Btw, numerical indicators of a journeyman: win percentage is between 39 and 61%, has fought in more than 10 different regions, no more than half of his fights have occurred in the same region, almost all of his losses are against fighters you've heard of, very few of his wins are against fighters you've heard of, has fought in over 30 fights, boxrec rating is approximately 15 - 35.
