Robert Guerrero announces retirement

Welterweight Robert Guerrero, who won world titles in two weight classes and fought some of the biggest names in boxing during his 16-year professional career, announced his retirement from the ring on Monday.

"First, I want to thank God for allowing me to have a wonderful career," Guerrero, 34, said in a statement. "I'm a kid from a small town in Gilroy, California, who made it to the mountaintop of the boxing world. When I was a young kid growing up, I always believed in myself, but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined a small-town kid like myself would be fighting in front of millions of fans."

Known as "The Ghost," Guerrero, who won world titles at featherweight and junior lightweight as well as interim belts at lightweight and welterweight, had not looked good in years, as he lost for the fifth time in seven fights. It could have easily been six defeats in that span but for kind scorecards in a 2015 bout with Aron Martinez.

Whether Guerrero was winning or losing fights, a few things were always constant: He gave it his all, made for entertaining fights and showed an enormous heart.

"A boxer's career is a long and tough road," he said. "Many tears were shed, lots of blood and tons of sweat. Many miles were traveled, thousands of rounds sparred. None were easy, and nothing was ever given to me. I earned everything I got the old-fashion way. I never ducked anyone and fought the best fighters in the world. I fought my way through every obstacle to make sure my fans enjoyed every second of every round of my fights."

Defenitely for the best, he's been a great servent to the sport, a 2 weight world champ who always gave value, even in the Figueroa fight you could see him bite down on that gumshield trying to muster some sort of comeback when all was lost, I always felt he jumped too many divisions too soon, apart from the Berto fight it never really happened for him at 147, he'd have been better hanging around 140 a little longer or even 135

First fight i seen of him was against katsidis when katsidis said "what you looking at?" In the center before the fight,thought that was funny. Great contender and made some good fights. Hope he enjoys his retirement.

I really rated Guerrero in his pomp, amazing to actually think he was only an official 2 weight world champion because he had so many other interim titles at Light, Light Welter and Welter - against decent opposition also. There is a case he is a 5 weight world champion of sorts. His interim titles were not exactly against bums.

Wow, Guerroro really took thanking Al Haymon to another level there.

So he should !! He was grossly overpaid in some of his PBC fights. $1mill for Aaron Martinez and $500k for Peralta.

Glad he has called it a day, looked shot against Figueroa. Probably should have packed it in after that Aaron Martinez fight which he definitely lost.

Al Haymon paid him a LOT of money and he has always struck me as a sensible guy. Don't forget he gave up prime years of his career to look after his wife so had circumstances been better he may have achieved more.

First time he really caught my attention was when he completely dominated Katsidis and I remember the Berto fight being quality.
