Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
When it comes to Conor and his chances of giving Floyd a legitimate test, there's a TON of BS going around. What should we believe? What shouldn't we believe? That's the hard part. For instance, take this interview with Paulie after his sparring session with Conor. I've watched it a couple times now and I'm not sure if this meant Conor looked good or not. At a couple of points in the interview, it looks like Paulie is about to break out laughing about Conor's boxing and then in the next sentence he's complimenting him.
It's a Showtime fight so is Paulie just doing his part with the build up or is that really a black eye from Conor? What's your take on this interview?

Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Paulie's left eye has a little bruise and he's got some bruises on his right cheek. There is only a photo of the sparring session with Conor's hands behind his back like Roy Jones Jr. It seems to me that Conor did well. Paulie is retired as a boxer and older than Conor, but so is Mayweather in that he is coming out of retirement to fight Conor and Mayweather is older than Paulie.

Well, what else do we need to know to judge how a sparring session went, than a single still photo?RScarf1 wrote:There is only a photo of the sparring session with Conor's hands behind his back like Roy Jones Jr. It seems to me that Conor did well.

There is only one thing to believe, Conor has no chance of winning one minute of the fight. Zero!

LOL, doing well with Paulie will leave you destitute against Floyd anyway.RScarf1 wrote:Paulie's left eye has a little bruise and he's got some bruises on his right cheek. Oh, okay. Given that information, I suppose Mayweather is probably just as bad as Malignaggi, or worse.RScarf1 wrote:Paulie is retired as a boxer and older than Conor, but so is Mayweather in that he is coming out of retirement to fight Conor and Mayweather is older than Paulie.
... I'm being sarcastic, btw. Mayweather fighting in 2017 is still possibly the best welterweight in the world. Malignaggi in 2017 got knocked out by Sam Eggington, and would be roughly the #30 welterweight in the world.

Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Conor McGregor will not land a single punch against Mayweather ...
Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
I do think that Conor is going to do a lot of that hands behind the back, mugging at Floyd, razzle dazzle to frustrate Floyd or to just get him away from the same old old old old old...way he fights. You all know what that is...that incredibly exciting shoulder roll or the duck down and tie up move. In between those exciting moves that has everyone jumping out of their seats...he may throw a pot shot straight right here and there. Floyd=watching paint dry. I hope Conor turns into Maidana 1 for just one night and just locks him on those ropes.

how are the odds just 5-1? should have started at 5000-1. (((fix)))
Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
He'll win a few seconds of rounds here and there... But he needs better sparring partners than Paulie... I would get Sadam Ali, Alex Saucedo, that kid Ocampo... Your sparring partners don't have to punch hard, but they need to be very good boxers... Paulie doesn't hack it... It's play time.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:There is only one thing to believe, Conor has no chance of winning one minute of the fight. Zero!

Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Paulie Malignaggi is the perfect sparring partner for Conor McGregor right now. Vastly experienced, great ring generalship, elusive, difficult to pin down, low power/risk.
He's like a shadow of Mayweather. If McGregor was take on better sparring partners he'd risk losing this fight through injury.
If he can get the better of Malignaggi, and I doubt he can, he could step up with a month to go. McGregor will need a vertical learning curve and all the confidence he can get and even then he can't know what its like to come out for round 10 with nothing left in the tank.
Don't forget that Mayweather's big strength has always been his stamina as well as his defence. Nothing so far suggests that this is any kind of a contest.

Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Paulie is not hard to hit, that's fiction. He constantly wasted energy and his only defense was his legs. That's when he was a good fighter. He's definitely good sparring for someone at Conor's level, he's nothing like Mayweather. Not even light. Granted, there are no sparring partners to mimick Floyd I just tire of fans confusing speed with defense.
Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Yeah, Hatton had no trouble with him at all, and he barely put a glove on Mayweather. That was back in his prime too almost ten years ago.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Paulie is not hard to hit, that's fiction. He constantly wasted energy and his only defense was his legs. The problem is there's no one out there who can do what Floyd can do as well as he does it.Kalan wrote:He'll win a few seconds of rounds here and there... Conor and his Team are crazy if they think that he's going to get his boxing skills up to compete with Floyd in just a couple of months. They are nuts if they are spending all their time on that. It's not going to happen. Forget pillow hands Paulie...I'd bring in the dirtiest fighters that have ever been in the sport and i'd come up with a better strategy to make this fight as ugly as possible. I"m definitely bringing in Maidana and Robert Garcia for a few days as they were the closest to getting it done.Thomastearns wrote:Paulie Malignaggi is the perfect sparring partner for Conor McGregor right now. Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
The purpose behind all the hype about surrounding the McGregor-Malignaggi war-of-words and subsequent sparring sessions, which resulted in Paulie telling the media that he "respected" Connor's boxing ability, is to allow Showtime to justify the marketing of the legitimacy of the Mayweather cross codes fight.
Paulie would have been paid for his efforts to help keep McGregor's name in the media spotlight, possibly by receiving monies from both Connor's camp and also from Showtime.
The mainstream casuals will now almost certainly believe that McGregor stands a chance of defeating Floyd Mayweather Jr, even if the hardcore boxing fraternity don't, since the Irishman's perceived lack of pro bouts will be considered as a redundant issue if he has already proven himself as being competitive against a former two-weight multiple time world champion during sparring.
To be perfectly honest with you, I suspect that this was a strategically planned marketing ploy and I personally have my doubts about the sincerity of Malignaggi's post-sparring thoughts, due to his very close affiliation with Showtime and Mayweather Jr.
Even Mayweather Jr. has repeatedly laboured over the fact that he himself is nowhere near as good as he once was and that he's struggled during his training camp, when coupled with Malignaggi's sparring stories, has created a fictional atmosphere of uncertainty about Floyd's victory over Connor during their circus event super-fight, which will has been done with the sole aim to sell the bout to the mainstream masses.

I doubt HBO is paying a showtime broadcaster to spar in preparation for a showtime ppv.

Yeah, you're absolutely right and I was wrong. It was a typo. I meant Showtime, but somehow keyed HBO instead.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I doubt HBO is paying a showtime broadcaster to spar in preparation for a showtime ppv.

I'm expecting Floyd to pinball McGregor like he did Hatton. Anything less would be a grotesque performance.SaadOffTheDeck wrote: LOL, doing well with Paulie will leave you destitute against Floyd anyway.
Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
McGregor just has to box his best and whatever happens, happens.. His chances are dim because Boxing is a closed fraternity.. You come into to boxing from the outside you're not treated fairly.. This is something Nate Diaz has pointed out in interviews will wreck McGregor's efforts.. "If Conor starts doing well or landing punches the referee will harass him for whatever he can.. can't do this.. can't do that"caldo2025 wrote:Conor and his Team are crazy if they think that he's going to get his boxing skills up to compete with Floyd in just a couple of months. If Mayweather grabs (illegal) that will be fine. The referee will yell "no punching" and break them.. If McGregor has a hand free to punch the referee will scream "NO PUNCHING!!! ... Break.. Let go gentlemen.. step back.. step back.. step back Conor" ... and the way the bell rings 5 seconds early or 5 seconds late, depending on who's landing punches? That will happen too. But one of Mayweather's better weapons is his left elbow. I doubt if that will come into play because an elbow from Conor could finish him.
Mayweather will already have every advantage known to man -- but forget about it -- they'll find more to give him.
Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Agree. Boxing is dirty. Mayweather generates the money and calls these things. Frustrating thing is he doesn't need the advantages, but has the anyway to make a 90% probability 99%Kalan wrote:McGregor just has to box his best and whatever happens, happens.. Re: Conor and Paulie Sparring Session
Paulie is a good choice of opponent for Conor to spar. For his purpose that is. He's vastly experienced and will no doubt learn bits from him
