Mairis Briedis vs. Mike Perez on September 30 in Latvia

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

WBC World Champion Briedis meets Irish-based and Cuban-born Perez in quarter-final showdown on September 30th at the Riga Arena in Latvia.

The World Boxing Super Series is delighted to announce that the Riga Arena in Latvia will play host to the cruiserweight quarter-final bout between reigning and defending WBC World Champion Mairis Briedis (22-0, 18 KOs) and Irish-based and Cuban-born Mike Perez (22-2-1, 14 KOs) on September 30th.

Briedis, one of the cruiserweight tournament’s four seeded fighters, selected Perez as his quarter-final opponent at the live Draft Gala in Monaco on July 8th. His first fight will see him defend the WBC title he claimed with a unanimous points victory over fellow World Boxing Super Series competitor and former WBO World Champion Marco Huck on April 1st, and the 32 year-old is looking forward to kick starting the competition in his hometown of Riga. ‘’I'm greatly honoured to begin my World Boxing Super Series journey at the Riga Arena,’’ said Briedis.

I do not think that Perez will have any chance against Briedis. Simply, this would be a mis-match........

Mike Perez hasn't really done much since his TKO 1 to Povetkin. Could end in early or mid stoppage.

Perez is untested at CW, but I think Breidis has chosen a dangerous opponent here...

I don't think so. Perez reminds me of Chambers. I don't think he's going to do anything at CW. Kudryashov was the bullet that everyone dodged because he has the power to KO anyone.

Perez has never relied on a speed advantage as much as Chambers did, and looking at him next to the other entrants I'm not sure if he's even 6'0". IMO he's better suited for CW than Eddie...

He never relied on it because his stamina was horrendous, but he did enjoy a speed advantage against his opponents. I remember the first five rounds or so of the Jennings fight. He was a pretty fast heavyweight. He just couldn't keep that speed consistent as he supposedly wasn't training, and he probably never had the frame of a heavyweight.

To me Perez is a more conventionally skilled fighter than Chambers and I think he has a larger toolkit to win even if he's not significantly faster than his opposition. I think Perez was comfortably outboxing, but not seriously outspeeding Jennings over the first half.

And, while Perez isnt exactly a hard worker in the ring, I dont believe he's as lazy as Eddie or will struggle as much with CW hustle. He obviously hasnt been tested at the new weight, but I think he has more potential at CW than Chambers did.

I think it might be the first for a legitimate title. Roy Jones Jr headlined a big card a few years back where he defended some trinket (WBU?) against Courteney Fry (I think) and Breidis has defended either the IBO or IBA title at home previously...

Briedis defended the IBA title. Nd yup ur right. RJJ defended the WBU German version belt in Latvia.

Conventional wisdom says that Perez will struggle coming down the weight. He will be too slow and ineffective. However nobody can tell for sure how the weight loss affected him, we just have not seen him in action. Because of the unknown he is a dangerous choice. Kudryashov would have been a lot easier opponent for Briedis in my opinion. Its possible they asked him not to choose Kud to avoid Cuban clash. Or maybe he did not want to go to Russia to fight.

He's already fought at cruiserweight, so how can he struggle coming down in weight?

Conventional wisdom says a drop in weight most likely results in disappointment. I perhaps wouldn't be surprised at a stoppage in favor of Perez, but most likely he loses a decision. I also very seriously doubt he's the "best in the world", regardless of what "people in the know" say.

It strongly depends on whether Perez is finally over his fight which crippled Mago. If yes, it is a 50/50 fight.
