I was just watching Lazlo Papp vs Luis Folledo now and it called my attention the way it ended. The fight was ok with a good supremacy of Papp and little fear shown by Folledo and then Folledo was down 2x in round 8 and referee didn't even do the 'standing eight count'* that since (as far as I know) it was already established in "Queensberry Rules" in 1800s as a rule to be used and was used used all over the boxing countries.
Folledo seemed not being so hurt like in some bouts we see the guy very stunned, he seemed ok to continue forward, then the referee stop it like if he was beheaded. It was ridiculous because old times referees were most sadistic ones.
It didn't show a way to protect Folledo and IMO seemed yes to give an early/anticipated victory to Papp, he was winning, but this stupid referring action does not justify the early stoppage.

It depends on the jurisdiction if the standing 8 was in effect or not. Different states and different countries use different sets of rules. And it certainly wasn't in effect in the 1800's the way Dempsey stood over Willard and smashed him back down as soon as he got up in 1919. It wasn't in effect for Patterson-Johannson 1 in 1959... Sometimes a fight is so one-sided that it doesn't make any sense for the referee to allow it to continue.
Different referees have different ideas about what stops a fight. Shannon Briggs didn't really get stopped by Lennox Lewis. He missed a hard left hook and slipped. It wasn't a great time to stop the fight because Briggs wasn't hurt and was firing back. Both fighters were getting hit. Lewis ducked a big left hook and Briggs went down on his own momentum. Frank Cuppiccino, a real prick, thought it was the perfect time to end it. I liked one thing Cuppiccino did. He yelled "Get off his neck!!" when Lewis grabbed Briggs around the neck with his left -- like a lot of referees let him get away with.
