Kevin Finnegan outscored Bunny Sterling for the British middleweight title in a big upset in 1974, relinquished the title and had his jaw bust in a routine 10-rounder, lost to Gratien Tonna and twice to Alan Minter, won the British title again by stopping Frankie "The Animal" Lucas on cuts in 1977, lost a third time to Alan Minter and to Ayub Kalule, Charlie Weir and Marvin Hagler (twice), then won the Lonsdale Belt outright by outpointing Tony Sibson in 1979.
