Joes was a super amateur and never got to show it internationally
i thought he did at least box internationally, in terms of boxing for GB/Wales
didn't he stop Chris Byrd and beat someone like Jurgen Braehmer?
christ, my memory.

To be fair are we not able to lay more of the blame for achievement and money on his promoter and/or himself?boxingknockout wrote:Ok - a bit of an odd one, but Joe Calzaghe.
Joe was phenomenal but didn't get the big fights til late, and training with his barking mad dad in a shack, who knew nothing about nutrition and strength training, and had no background in boxing
(look E.g. at Joe's body compared to today's ripped fighters, not to
Mention his hands not being looked after properly) held him back.
With his talent, based in EG london with a nutritionist, good advice, properly promoted and managed and with a good trainer as opposed to sparring a couple or sometimes no half decent fighters on a tin shed with a moustachioed nutter with a chip on his shoulder....
Also Enzo wound up the ABA and stopped his own son from going further as an amateur which held Joe's visibility and signing fee well back.
Joes was a super amateur and never got to show it internationally despite winning 3 consecutive ABA titles at 3 consecutive weights...(correct me if I'm wrong.)
Honestly Calzaghe should've been a superstar the minute he turned pro and been in the spotlight immediately.
Lost out on achievements and money because of his mostly insane dad....
Joe was 22-0 and British champion when he became world champion with a big win against the big domestic name in Eubank. To me that doesn't look like a guy being needlessly held back and forms a foundation for bigger things to come.
What followed, for the next nine years, was a complete and utter joke and a waste of a career given his talent. A common bone of contention for people who don't really follow boxing is that the big fights don't happen. The point is, they usually do. With Joe, how many could have but didn't? Absolutely loads.
Calzaghe drives me mad to be honest. I was a massive fan convinced he was the real deal and still believe it, but he just never had the chance to properly show it.

With a hugely disappointing record and one of those weights was entirely spent against two men with a collective age of more than eighty.Naandrew wrote:2 weight lineal champion .........dirk2686 wrote:To be fair are we not able to lay more of the blame for achievement and money on his promoter and/or himself?boxingknockout wrote:Ok - a bit of an odd one, but Joe Calzaghe.

My frustration with Calzaghe is that I genuinely think he was absolutely brilliant but never really had the chance to show it.

Really? The China chinned cock feeder underachieved? He just wasn't skilful, fast or solid enough.cuban glass wrote:Kevin Mitchell
He was given many chances, top promoter etc
Re: British Boxings Underachievers?
That Joe wasn't a musclebound cookie cutter boxer helped him out, he was as fit as a flea and strong, ask people who fought him. He also was a spiteful puncher until his hands went. Most of all, though, he was a shit hot boxer.

He had all the skills in the world so I don't know what you are talking about maybe you are trolling.. beautiful skills, fast, powerful, movement, he had everything to be a world champion. Unbelievable that he never did. He was winning the fight against Linares when he knocked Linares ( a very good champion) down he should have closed the show that night, but was never the same after that fight.boxingknockout wrote:Really? He blew it himself, He wasn't dedicated enough, he was out drinking all the time.He was due a shot at super featherweight and he messed up with his weight and had to move up. His prime years he was inactive.
Re: British Boxings Underachievers?
Paul Appleby for me. Hard to believe that the guy has only turned 30 but hasn't fought in over 3 years.

i made the point that he underachieved myself, but I'd hardly say it was 'unbelievable' he never won a world championshipcuban glass wrote:He had all the skills in the world so I don't know what you are talking about maybe you are trolling.. beautiful skills, fast, powerful, movement, he had everything to be a world champion. The Martin Lindsay fight damaged him - he never really recovered.cocka09 wrote:Paul Appleby for me. Hard to believe that the guy has only turned 30 but hasn't fought in over 3 years.

Martin could be another one who underachieved, to an extent.3132DW wrote:The Martin Lindsay fight damaged him - he never really recovered.cocka09 wrote:Paul Appleby for me. Hard to believe that the guy has only turned 30 but hasn't fought in over 3 years.
