I had no idea they had a rematch. Can't believe all the record books missed this. Boxrec should add this to the database.

Re: Jack Dempsey vrs Jess Willard (II)
Why didn't they celebrate the anniversary in beautiful Toledo, Ohio instead of Miami Beach?
Re: Jack Dempsey vrs Jess Willard (II)
They didn't need Willard to do a rematch... Just bring in a big slab of beef and Dempsey.

That's because the 're-union' actually happened in January of 1939.APerno wrote:Why didn't they celebrate the anniversary in beautiful Toledo, Ohio instead of Miami Beach?
according to one of Jack Dempsey's autiobiographies,Willard was broke and asked Jack Dempsey for a job,
so Dempsey hired him as a liquor salesman to promote his new product"jack Dempsey's Special Label Whiskey"
"the whiskey with a punch".
They did a number of appearences for it and what almost sounds like sometype of early filmed early commercial9possibly for the movie houses)
because a lot of cameras and media were present.
BTW I think the other person with Doc Kearns at lleast in the second film clip was Jim Dougherty the referee who refed Demspey vrs Gibbons among others.

Dempsey with Kearns and Dougherty - Dempsey must be a forgiving man. Dougherty and Dempsey had quite a falling-out after the Gibbons fight.Caractacus wrote:That's because the 're-union' actually happened in January of 1939.APerno wrote:Why didn't they celebrate the anniversary in beautiful Toledo, Ohio instead of Miami Beach?

Ouch!!! Funny story!!! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you -- Willard was really a poor businessman. Willard had the equivalent of over a million dollar in today's money after the Dempsey fight. So do you think he or his corner would stop the fight after the 1st round -- when it was hopeless??? Not a prayer.APerno wrote:Dempsey with Kearns and Dougherty - Dempsey must be a forgiving man. LOL
Willard fought amazingly well in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. He hurt Dempsey with an uppercut.

Re: Jack Dempsey vrs Jess Willard (II)
yeah,I just re-watched the fight.
It was amazing Willard came out for the second round.
I don't believe he was even knocked down in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.
looked like he was just getting warmed up,but the damage that Dempsey did in the first was just too much,
with the missing teeth, broken jaw and broken cheekbones, broken ribs, etc.
BTW the uppercut that Willard hit Dempsey with was the second hardest punch he was ever the reciepient of next to a punch by Gunboat Smith
according to Dempsey.

Re: Jack Dempsey vrs Jess Willard (II)
It wasn't even close to the 2nd hardest according to Dempsey himself...and the shot didn't do anything to Dempsey.. He immediately resumed smashing Willard. Dempsey said the hardest punch he was ever hit with was a left hook to the body by John Lester Johnson... "That's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life, by anybody, anywhere, with anything... It broke 3 ribs like matchsticks." ... That's from his autobiography "Dempsey"Caractacus wrote:BTW the uppercut that Willard hit Dempsey with was the second hardest punch he was ever the reciepient of next to a punch by Gunboat Smith according to Dempsey.
Other punches Dempsey noted were the first punch from Fripo... a hard right hand from Carpentier that staggered him... and the first punch from Gene Tunney -- a straight right... Jack Sharkey was a light hitter, but he had Dempsey staggering and damned near knocked out.. The way Dempsey loaded up and threw against Willard was very unusual. You only load and throw like that when you have absolutely NO fear of anything coming back.
Dempsey also claimed that Fireman Flynn legitimately knocked him out... something that's more than a little dubious based on eye witness accounts.
Re: Jack Dempsey vrs Jess Willard (II)
You had commented once that Dempsey eased up after the first round because the infamous $10,000 '1st round' bet was gone. Which I think is a good insight. -- Dempsey's awkward, 'loaded up' style in the first round may also have been caused by the bet. He was willing to make it an all or nothing matter. - Dempsey looks a more polished boxer in rounds two and three. -- Dempsey was a better boxer than he is usually given credit; certainly he was no Tunney or Ali, but they were great boxers, and he was no Louis either for that matter, but still better than he is often remembered. I believe the two bawls with Willard and Firpo created a misconception (legend) that Dempsey was all banger and no boxer.Kalan wrote:It wasn't even close to the 2nd hardest according to Dempsey himself...and the shot didn't do anything to Dempsey..
