Clinton is a big smarter and more adaptable than Lacy, and won't just wade forward like a big ape getting smacked in the kisser all night.
Lacy wasn't ready for Calzaghe, and wasn't allowed to fight his fight, but even so, was a decent fighter, made to look ordinary.
Woods will give Joe a tougher time, but I think the difference in speed might make the difference.

I make Joe a strong favourite, but I don't see it as a foregone conclusion. I think that Woods has looked excellent in his last 2 outings and since he's had Richard Poxon in his corner.boxingchat wrote:Does anyone really give Clinton Woods a chance with JC, surely not?
How, why and what with? Please enlighten me because quite simply I cannot see it being any more a fight than Tocker Pudwell.
Hobson may just have opened his mouth one time too many and Warren and JC may call his bluff. £100k bets is that all he can afford to lose?
I hope Warren does call that bluff.
I heard that RJJ is asking for $5m to come over here and fight Joe, which probably puts him out of the equation (if true). I'd prefer to see Calzaghe-Woods than Calzaghe-RJJ anyway

maxbollocks is at it again.jamesmcdonnell wrote:What are you about 'nearly out of it?' are you implying he was almost stopped, because if you are, then you're talking bollocks. I was at ringside for the 1st one and I saw no point where Johnson looked like he was going down.
Woods has looked better of late, but to call Glen Johnson a journeyman is showing your ignorance mate. Would a journeyman have beaten Tarver and lost a close one in a rematch? Johnson has a patchy record because he fought most of his career as the opponent in his adversaries home turf, and had a lot of tight/dubious decisions against him. He also wasn't well backed and was done no favours.
Glen's style also gave Woods a lot of problems, as Johnson has a good rolling defence and is excellent on the inside, and was good at closing the gap on Woods and keeping him under pressure.
Prior to losing to Hopkins, Glen was considered a very hot ticket indeed, and was being backed for future world title success, but was dropped by his backers after losing to Hopkins.
Glen might not be flashy, but he's effective at what he does, and has a good repetoire of boxing skills.
To say Calzaghe would have done this or that is one thing, but bottom line is, Calzaghe pulled out twice and never faced him, so it's all conjecture. Glen was prepared to come and defend his title on Joe's home turf and never got the chance.
were you buying a drink or in the toilets in the last round?
I know of Johnson's body of work, as I've collected a lot of the fights and yes he'd had some good wins. He's not a journeyman, moreso a horrendously badly managed fighter who was put in vs Merqui Sosa of all ppl after getting battered by Hopkins.Johnson was good enough even then to nearly beat Sosa (on my scoring) even with a shut eye
The best he did pre Woods was KO Ulrich which was very good and push Ottke all the way, as well as outwork Eric Harding. Good work, certainly and I enjoyed watching them.
Johnson went down in the last round of the Woods fight. he was staggered by a right uppercut by Woods, went off on one around the ring, got hit by another right and went down. Ian John Lewis didn't call it a KD, but a short Woods right made him go weak at the knees. You might have been there, but check the replay.
Johnson wasn't that far ahead & had obviously punched himself out after a strong start and had little left by the end.
And did I say that Johnson was a fornicating journeyman? I said that Calzaghe said he was a journeyman. I've had a lot of praise for Johnson's showings, especially the past two where he's appeared quite accomplished.

Bingo! That's exactly what I said would happen. Jones despite getting his arse kicked twice in a row and stinking the joint out in his rematch against Tarver, thinks he's a superstar....Chambers2 wrote:I make Joe a strong favourite, but I don't see it as a foregone conclusion. Calzaghe and co should tell RJ to go play with his cock......he has a farm full of them after all.

Bizzarely, a lot of people at ringside for the 2nd, said they thought the 2nd fight was closer. I thought that Johnson beat him pretty emphatically in the 2nd, it was still close as Clinton had his rounds, but I think I had it by 3-4 rounds clear to Johnson at the time.
Johnson is such an underrated fighter, and I think his experiences on the road have made him a better fighter. He's one of those guys whose later careers are impressive because they finally get the breaks and are able to draw on their experience in the ring.
I also think that for a guy his age he has very good fitness, he threw a lot of shots in both fights with Woods and dug deep when he had to.

Pundit mate - let it go
Your obsession with all things anti JC is starting to show through your pretence as an 'impartial' poster.
Fact is JC v Lacy was THE fight at SM Joe spanked him - to discredit Joe at every opportunity is wrong.
Its a shame cos its obvious you are knowledgeable but quotes like "its a difficult fight for Jc therefore it won't happen" betray your true feelings.

strange that is, Johnson won at least 8 rounds to 4 in the rematch, IMO. The first fight I had Johnson either one or two rounds up after 11, but I gave Woods a 2 point round in rd 12.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Bizzarely, a lot of people at ringside for the 2nd, said they thought the 2nd fight was closer. Unbelievable that Johnson wasn't completely destroyed by the Hopkins defeat, as it was one of the nastiest beatings I've seen. Even more amazing that he's come back from all the close losses. Never mind that he'd actually win a world title.
Johnson has looked very accomplished in his last two fights. He's ready to fight a southpaw like Calzaghe, as his last 4 fights have been vs lefties (W12 R Hall, TKO 10 GK Jones, L12 Tarver and W12 Tarver).

Woods just dominated two top ten contenders, Hoye and Gonzalez, both of whom are a level above the men Calzaghe was beating between the 2003 Mitchell fight and the 2006 Lacy fight. on his recent form, improved conditioning, size (consider, by contrast, that Calzaghe is a short armed fighter), and well rounded skills, you have to give Woods half a chanceEl Raincoat wrote:I can't believe this is even a debate. Woods is a very average fighter Calzaghe does everything far better than Woods. If Joe handled Lacy with such ease he'd go through Woods easily.
this is a very good potential fight and i hope it does happen. calzaghe vs woodhall and reid weren't exactly mismatches. the current Woods is better than those two good boxers.
now Woods has never given the outstanding, attention grabbing performances that JC has done when required, but Woods is a subtle, quietly impressive guy. Some may think I'm off my head, but I think a lot of the 'classics' of british boxing are overrated (was Conteh-Finnegan 1 really that close?) and this would be better than most of 'em...
with the shit we've put up with on these shores - notwithstanding a couple of major Warren shows (Hatton-Tszyu and Calzaghe-Lacy), a couple of good FA IBF fights, and some good recent domestic stuff on Sky - we DESERVE matchups like this. imagine the pride and the skills that would make up a fight like Calzaghe-Woods.
at any rate, on paper it looks fantastic, with a unified s/m champ vs a light heavy champ

I also believe this could be a competitive fight. Woods' jab coupled with his reach advantage alone should give Calzaghe something to chew on.viciousmaussa wrote:Woods just dominated two top ten contenders, Hoye and Gonzalez, both of whom are a level above the men Calzaghe was beating between the 2003 Mitchell fight and the 2006 Lacy fight. on his recent form, improved conditioning, size (consider, by contrast, that Calzaghe is a short armed fighter), and well rounded skills, you have to give Woods half a chanceEl Raincoat wrote:I can't believe this is even a debate. It's of course not the opponent that Calzaghe should target - this is Kessler - but it would be a better fight than the celebrity bouts he seems to be considering.
In any case, I'm extremely pessimistic that this fight will happen - Warren just doesn't pick fights that Joe could lose.

Winky wants revenge!
Winky will get whooped too if he faces Joe although maybe not as easy as Lacy since he can actually jab.

when Calzaghe broke his hand and Lacy, Shaw and all the American media (including my editor of the time whom i told was talking outright shit) bragged that Joe was scared of Lacy, Warren tried to line up Winky as a poss foe (with Lacy considering other options at the time).
Would be a good move to wait and see if WW can win the m/w crown. won't be as easy for WW to beat Taylor as ppl think. But it'd be nice to see him take on a good name who's still fully functioning...If WW would beat Taylor, he will be a nightmare to negotiate with
Calzaghe and Woods should get it on, now more than ever... Sure, Calzaghe pulled out vs Woods when CW wasn't considered world class. Woods then won the IBF title and put off a lucratrive showdown, saying that Calzaghe had to fight some eliminator fights...Now both are as big as they will ever be

I'm going to get straight to the point - pundit you are a bell end......... if you think that JC will avoid Clinton because it's a hard fight.pundit wrote:My take: Woods would have an excellent chance in this one. Good jab, good ring generalship, hihg work rate; all things Calzaghe isn't used to deal with.
But because this is so, the bout is unlikley to come about.

JOE'S BRIT OF A BATTLE - The Mirror
JOE CALZAGHE'S next clash could be his very own Battle of Britain.
The IBF and WBO super-middleweight champ, 33, may box Sheffield's IBF light-heavyweight Clinton Woods, also 33, in Cardiff on July 8.
Promoter, allegedly, said: "I've got no problem with the fight. We will name an opponent for Joe in two weeks' time."
It's a title for Joe I suppose, but the LH division is about as exciting as an airport lounge.

I tell you what, this matchup would do more to enhancing Joe's reputation among hard-core boxing fans than the Lacy slugout. Woods is a seasonend, very solid opponent who has improved significantly and has a couple of strenghts - notably his jab - that are not necessarily to Joe's liking.MightyWarrior wrote:JOE'S BRIT OF A BATTLE - The Mirror
