Pick a fighter that could beat a great

Post by paddy chavez »

Every fighter has a style he doesn't like or a guy he struggled with like Ali and Norton or Tommy hearns and Iran Barkley .
I'll start with Sugar Ray Robinson an obvious one would be Tommy Hearns less so terrible Terry Norris .

I think several non-ATG HWs could beat ATG HWs who boxed generations ago. For example, it wouldn't surprise me if Wilder beat up Marciano, who is about the size of a stubby modern LHW.

Maybe with the size difference of older heavyweights to modern heavyweights you are better off sticking to weight categories with picking a non-great to beat a great. E.g. welterweight has always been 147lb throughout the ages

With this I would suggest Hearns is also a great, so not so much a 'fighter that could beat great' but a 'great who could potentially beat a great'

:maybe:

That's why I said the obvious choice

De Jesus could certainly beat a few greats at lightweight.

He is not in the HOF and was unbeaten at lightweight from 72ish to 1980 - unless your name was Roberto Duran who he went W1 & L2 with.

Seen as many rate Duran as the greatest lightweight of all time I'm sure De Jesus could have give many a great a run for their money :TU:

Valero was ridiculously overrated. I think Witherspoon could beat Ali.

Yeah. I was never impressed with Valero when I saw him in spite of his gawdy KO percentage. The people that think he's some amazing talent that never reached his potential lead me to believe they never spent much time actually watching him, and they're just in love with the fighter and puncher they see on paper.

The real thing was significantly less impressive in my view, and would've gotten his ass handed to him by A LOT of fighters if he'd stuck around long enough.

His chin was straight up in the air. He wouldn't have lasted 2 rounds with Manny or Marquez.

What about Fullmer over Robinson, think Gene has 2 wins and a draw with SRR in 4 fights, Sugar Ray was getting on a bit mind

Fullmer was great. I think he means hypothetical fights anyway.

I was a Valero fan as you can probably tell. But I also agree that he wasn't anywhere near the most talented boxer. But he was an animal when he got in that ring.

Although even then, 24hr weigh-ins has probably screwed with the comparison in some cases.

I don't think beating someone before they improved a lot really counts.

Like Boone beating Stevenson or Choyenski beating Jack Johnson.

Club fighters don't win world titles. Gatti won 2.

That's true, but he was pretty far from great. I can't think of anyone he could beat that was.

No argument there, but he's better than a "Club fighter". That's all I'm saying.

I wouldn't pick him to beat any fighters I consider to be Great either, and there's several guys NOT in the Hall of Fame in his weight range that I think would've beat the hell out of him.

I adore Gatti, he's the reason why I'm a Boxing fan, but I keep it real about what he was capable of.

Was more relative to their weight, plus Ali had advantages when he was younger as well as holes in his game.

I'm a big Frampton fan when he's on a good day but I reckon there's a fair chance he could've taken most folk on if I'm honest... x

Gatti is the reason a lot of people got in to boxing. The guy was an absolute legend! Whether you like the guy or not, he was a phenomenol fighter and someone I always looked up to! Who never liked Gatti?

Personally I couldn't get enough of him man!!!

I'm a massive fan of your posts mate. But... Wilder beating up Marciano?

Marciano was a pure beast! Severe killer!
