Best fight card ever?
Best fight card ever?
I remember when I started watching boxing back in 2003 I saw 6 world title fights (8 if you considered interim and the wbo title as world titles back then) in the Ruiz vs Rahman undercard. You don't see that many title fights nowadays anymore. You're lucky to see 3 fights between top 10 fights on the same card. What is the best fight card that you have ever seen or know of?
Re: Best fight card ever?
I was at that card in Atlantic City. I didn't remember 8 title fights....I've got to look it up now to see what old age has made me forget.
I remember Hopkins/Joppy and Mayorga/Spinks and Zab Judah but the rest is hazy.....maybe too much drinking.

The craziest thing is that card sucked. I remember a Monday night when ABC had Holmes/Jones, Tate/Weaver, Leonard/Green and Mustafa/M Johnson from different sites. I think Hearns, Arguello and a bunch others were in off TV bouts but I might be mixing that up.
Leonard/Benitez and haggler/Antuofermo were on the same card.

Re: Best fight card ever?
I wouldn't even like to say which was the best fight ever let alone best card
In recent times domestically it'd be the Joshua vs moline card. Yes the main event sucked, but whyte vs chisora and burton vs buglioni etc made up for it
Additionally the card where Selby won his world title vs gradovich (sp?) and Kevin Mitchell had a great scrap with linares was good

Fenech/nelson was on the Tyson/Ruddock undercard.
Re: Best fight card ever?
Gosh it is hard to remember full fight cards. I get confused because I don't lump them together and recall individual fights better.
I do remember Top Rank did a 3 fight card where all the fighters were unbeaten called the 0 must go or something like that. It was early last year.
That was really good.

I went to Sports Networks 'Magnificent 7" card in Birmingham - maybe 2010??
Degale, Gavin, Clev, Brook, Macklin, probably a few others I have forgotten...but the best fight was probably Del Boy v Sam Sexton.
There was also an absolutely brutal fight in the crowd not far from me as well!
For sheer volume of decent fights it was very good domestic stuff.
I loved Clev Bellew 2 at Echo Arena as well. The card was good (Groves, AJ v Sprott, Callum Smith) but my brother got me VIP tickets so I was two rows from the apron...amazing experience. I watched the main event sat next to Javier Chacon who fought Jamie McDonnell earlier in the night (he had his arm in a sling after dislocating his shoulder) and Sjekloca (who lost to Smith) and his team were sat on the row behind me.
The worst card I have ever attended was probably AJ Klitchko. Obviously, the main event was epic, but the rest of the card, for the ticket price, was awful value for money. If it was at York Hall for £20 I would complain but at £65 and sat about 140 miles from the ring was not great.

Re: Best fight card ever?
Sheffield 1997 was a long night for us Brits, all on one bill was Calzaghe v Eubanks and Hamed v Badillo both for WBO world titles, Johnny Nelson in a European title fight, Paul Ingle v Jon Jo Irwin for British and commonwealth, Mark Winters v Carl Wright for the British title, Ryan Rhodes in an 8 rounder and all in WBO intercontinental title fights were John Keeton, Pele Reid, Dean Pithie and Jason Matthews, phew !!!
Re: Best fight card ever?
Mexico city 1993 wasn't too bad Terry Norris, Julio César Chávez, Azumah Nelson and Michael Nunn all defending world titles along with Mcclellan and Trinidad on the undercard

I was thinking of this one. King did a few of those huge cards around JC Chavez and Norris.

I was at that show too, was a brilliant stacked card from start to finish http://boxrec.com/show/603040cpfc_fan wrote:I went to Sports Networks 'Magnificent 7" card in Birmingham - maybe 2010??

.
and yeah some crazy fights outside the ring with chairs flying lol between Brummies and welsh.
I wish they would have continued with that theme on putting a load of title fights on one PPV show
Nathan Cleverly - Karo Murat .. was Cleverly''s best ever performance, looked special that night.
Enzo Maccrinelli - Alexander Frenkel. Very good fight, Brutal finish, Shame we never saw Frenkel in the ring again he looked excellent
Dereck Chisora - Sam Sexton 2 was probably the fight of the night yeah :)
Matthew Hall - Lukas Konecny - good fight too
It was actually supposed to be even better .. it was supposed to be Darren Barker vs Matthew Macklin as the main event, and Ryan Rhodes vs Lukas Konecny, but Barker and Rhodes pulled out injured.

I certainly remember that card. I believe it was held in a few different sites. I took off work to watch it.
Surgar Ray Leonard's highlight reel KO of Dave "Boy" Green was the most memeorable part of the show.
But I don't recall Arguello being part of it, even off TV. Hearns neither.
I still like the 1978 Carnival of Champions held at the Superdome and headed by the Leon Spinks-Muhammad Ali rematch.
On the undercard, Jorge Lujan defended his WBA bantamweight title with a 15 round decision over Albert Davila.
Also Danny "Little Red" Lopez thrashed Juan Malvarez in just 2 rounds in defense of his WBC featherweight crown.
In the main co-feature, WBA light heavyweight champion Victor Galindez was stunningly stopped in 13 rounds by the Jewish Bomber, Mike Rossman.
The entire card was televised on a Friday night by ABC. Naturally, Howard Cosell called the main event, which saw Ali become boxing's first 3 time heavyweight champion in a one-sided decision over Spinks.
The telecast drew Super Bowl type ratings, somewhere in the 40s.
At the time, it was the most watched televised sporting event ever.

Re: Best fight card ever?
I remember that as well. I was 9 years old, watched it at my Uncles and I kept waking him up to watch fighters he had never heard of. Rossman beat Ranquello on the undercard of Curry/Brooks, so I was cheering for him.
Re: Best fight card ever?
I think your are right about Cleverley...I am a massive fan of his, and at the time he looked destined for big things but that was probably his best night to date.cuban glass wrote:I was at that show too, was a brilliant stacked card from start to finish http://boxrec.com/show/603040cpfc_fan wrote:I went to Sports Networks 'Magnificent 7" card in Birmingham - maybe 2010??

The Enzo fight was brutal and horrible - I remember him getting up and looking out on his feet...and when the ref let it go on everyone watched through their fingers waiting for Maccrinelli to get wiped out. Its times like that I don't like boxing. Probably the most savage knockout I have seen live.
Re: Best fight card ever?
The Enzo-Frenkel KO was brutal. I love knockouts, but that was tough to watch even for me. Enzo had boxed nicely until getting dropped...
Re: Best fight card ever?
One of the best events I've been to was in Fort Myers, FL. Nearly all the fights were evenly matched. None of them were world-class, but it didn't matter. Even the Florida State Boxing Commission said it was one of the best events they ever saw. Hector Camacho's son Christian Camacho was the main event. It was the same day as Canelo vs. Liam Smith, so attendance suffered, but it was action-packed from beginning to end. People should go to a live boxing event and see exciting fights. Boxing is not just what is on television.
