Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
According to former contender and father of one of the fighters, Denzil Browne. Denzil Jr. and Daniel Ruddock were scheduled to be on Mark Batesons Elland Road show on Sept 1st, which is already subject to extra security measures after a riot at a semi pro show at the venue earlier on in the year. Big Denz says police have insisted on no black fighters and he's speaking to his lawyer and the press as I type!

I had to double check that I hadn't stumbled into the Boxing History forum by mistake...

And that is why I cannot believe that this happened.mickey1975 wrote:Big Denz says police have insisted on no black fighters and he's speaking to his lawyer and the press as I type!

Why? He's been selling tickets for weeks and then this? And Ruddock is nothing to do with Denzil.bripez wrote:And that is why I cannot believe that this happened.mickey1975 wrote:Big Denz says police have insisted on no black fighters and he's speaking to his lawyer and the press as I type!

Denzil is not shy about it, and is friends with Bateson so can't see him making it up.

A total random guess from me is police want neither on and it's a coincidence they're black. I've seen Ruddock before and he has a very rough following, but they were really well behaved to be fair!

Its hard to believe that in 2017 police are insisting no black boxers to partake in sport. I dont know either boxer so not sure if there is issues between them that could result in some sort of riot. Even if that was the case its upto the security on the night to prevent such issues. I just cannot believe that police would say that no blacks to fight on a show. Its incredibly a foolish and racist thing to say and someone should be accountable for saying such a thing.

They're both house fighters and have no problem with each other.mimmy123 wrote:Its hard to believe that in 2017 police are insisting no black boxers to partake in sport. Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
What a load of pish! As if the police are going to ban people fighting based on their skin colour. Anyone believing that needs to get a grip ffs.
Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
Surely this can't be true? Not in 2017 in a civilized country.
Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
Race is a protected characteristic i.e. you can't discriminate against someone because of their race. I'm not a lawyer but denying someone the right to practice their trade because of the colour of their skin is (without ambiguity) illegal.

I find it hard to believe that the police would be foolish enough to say that they don't want them on the show because they are black; I mean, it would be an act of staggering stupidity if they put in those terms. However if they have said that then the parties affected should contact a solicitor.

Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
I believe Denzil has said this. However he's either misinterpreted what the police have said or he's put a spin on it. There is absolutely no way the police have said that no black boxers can fight - trust me, in this politically correct world ANYBODY working within a public sector organisation would never dream of ending their career with a statement like that.
What MAY have been said is that 2 boxers representing rival gangs in Leeds will not be allowed to fight on this bill. Absolutely nothing to do with colour, just their associates.

Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
Police in this country wouldn't say no blacks.
Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
As the last couple posters said, no way on earth the police would have said that.

So it sounds like the police didn't actually say anything specifically about black fighters? If so, why are people speaking to lawyers / the press? Seems like a non-story tbh.mickey1975 wrote:If you look further up, I said it's probably coincide they're both black.tobyh5 wrote:As the last couple posters said, no way on earth the police would have said that.

No, that's my theory, Big Denzil is 100% saying they said that.Boxerbeetle wrote:So it sounds like the police didn't actually say anything specifically about black fighters? This is it in a nutshell.dalcumly wrote:I believe Denzil has said this. However he's either misinterpreted what the police have said or he's put a spin on it. Mickey - is this the same outfit where there was a riot at their last show? (somebody posted up a video) - initially the Police banned all unlicensed boxing shows at a particularly venue?
At the very most, the Police might have said they don't want Boxer X or Boxer Y on the bill because their supporters have a history of causing trouble.
It may just be that Boxer X and Boxer Y are both black and "Big Denzil" has gone off on a complete tangent and seen an opportunity for some fake news about Police being racist or something.
What are the actual details and background to this?

Re: Two boxers not allowed to box because they're black?
No, there was a riot at the same venue on an unlicensed show, nothing to do with this BBBC promoter or fighters. The promoter has been promoting there for years without trouble and neither fighter has any history of trouble at their fights.bripez wrote:This is it in a nutshell.dalcumly wrote:I believe Denzil has said this.
