Gervonta Davis to defend title against Francisco Fonseca on August 26

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Now, Davis will be able to showcase his stuff on the big stage as the co-feature on the Mayweather-McGregor undercard. He’ll defend his junior lightweight title against untested prospect Francisco Fonseca (19-0-1, 13 KOs) on August 26 in Las Vegas.

The plan was to match Davis with former titleholder Roman Martinez, but the Puerto Rican is not in training and wouldn’t be able to make the 130-pound limit, a source told RingTV.com.

“I’m really excited to fight as the co-main event on the biggest card in combat sports history,” said Davis, who is the youngest-reigning champion in the United States. “I plan to put on a great show for everyone in attendance in Las Vegas and for those who purchase the PPV. I want to thank my team for this incredible opportunity. I’m ready for Floyd Mayweather to pass his torch to me.”

“I am super grateful for this great opportunity,” said Fonseca. “The dream of every young boxer is to fight for the world title and this opportunity comes at the best moment of my career and in the biggest in the history of this sport. I will beat Gervonta Davis and I will shock the world that night.”

Showcase fight for Davis

19-0 seems nice, but the combined record of FF's opponents is 172-223-23 (thx gil).

Fonseca was ordered to fight Dib in an eliminator recently, so wonder who will replace him there...Dib vs Ogawa?

Davis will beat Fonseca with ease but if the knock on is good bouts down the food chain then ...yay

... and if Garcia doesn't want him, then take on Crawford or Spence. Hell, why not Joshua?

May I ask why doesn't Davis need to man up?

The undercard is actually pretty decent IMO. This is definitely the worst fight of the main part (Jack-Clev, Porter-Dulorme, Tabiti-Cunningham, and this).

Dulorme actually gets overlooked a lot. He's a legitimately talented fighter he just has a glass jaw. He'll be able to give Porter problems for as long as it lasts, and Porter's NOT the biggest puncher so who knows how it'll go.

Knowing Dulorme's issues with ability to take a punch though I wouldn't be surprised to see Porter rush him, and try to bulldog him outta there the way he did Malignaggi.

Jack vs Cleverly could be a very competitive bout. Definitely a solid 1st Light Heavyweight opponent for Jack. Tabiti vs Cunningham is interesting, not sure what Cunningham has left at this point, but this fight will tell us.

Cleverly and Jack is a good fight. I'm not interested in Porter/Dulorme, and Steve Cunningham's ghost should retire. I don't want him to end up with brain damage.
