Carlos DeLeon vs. Matthew Saad Muhammad: Who wins at light heavyweight?

Post by scorpio83 »

I would please like to know who would win the light heavyweight match up between Matthew Saad Muhammad and Carlos DeLeon? Muhammad split two fights with future crusierweight champion Marvin Camel, would he split the fight with Carlos DeLeon? In my opinion, Muhammad would dominate DeLeon at light heavyweight and take a decision. If they fight at cruiserweight, then DeLeon would either take a decision or stop Muhammad. Tell me your opinion. :box:

I concur. And he would've taken Eddie too, if they rematched.

From my fairly limited knowledge of the two I have to go for Saad at 175.

I'd caution folks on this one......Saad had a great fighting reputation and was as rugged as they get....guts that knew no bounds.

But not much of a tech.

But is what Saad had, the stuff it takes to beat Deleon? I think it's food for thought.

Tough fight for Mathew but that's just the way he liked it he would wear down the bigger man and stop him in the 15th round. :salut:

Depends on how serious Deleon trains and takes the fight, I think.
No variance on Saad Muhammad as every fight he came in trained out and ripped and ready for war.
Deleon had a tendency to loaf in preparation, but if motivated may be a hard man to track down and outscore as BoxBuzz said. You'd probably know the outcome at the weigh-in.

If Saad Muhammad and DeLeon were to fight at cruiserweight, would DeLeon decision him in 15 rounds? What is your thoughts?

I think if Saad still at his best went up he'd still win but it would be by split dec but it would have to be a prime Saad :bag:

Yes, if Saad is at his best at cruiserweight and swarming over DeLeon with solid punches he would have win with a decision in 15 rounds. However, if DeLeon used his boxing skills behind his jabs and counters, then he would have take a decision in 15 rounds because it is DeLeon's weight division at cruiserweight. It would be a 50/50 fight between the two. :TU:

Too bad we would never know how good DeLeon could have been. Don King wouldn't let him move up to Heavy to fight Holmes or move down to fight Spinks.

Part of what made Saad so hard to beat at 175 was his pure strength. I remember Gil Clancy used to comment on it nearly every fight. He was a beautiful physical specimen at that weight. I don't know if he would have lost anything moving up in weight.

But then again he was weakened by making the weight against Braxton at the end of his title run. Maybe moving up would have extended his prime. Who knows?

That would be interesting had Saad moved up to cruiserweight in his prime and fighting like the light heavyweight Saad, but we would not know how good he would have been after losing his WBC light heavyweight title to Qawi.

I attended the rematch between Camel and Matt Franklin (before changed to Saad Muhammed) in Missoula. Most in attendance felt Franklin was robbed. A protest was lodged by Franklin's camp, but members of the Montana Athletic Commission had left the arena about mid-point of the bout. Camel was cut prone and that seemed a factor in the loss to DeLeon. My pick would be Saad Muhammed walking DeLeon down with his power. Saad Muhammed by KO 10.
