Because DM was the only A-game fighter in that list, besides Hill and Griffin.pundit wrote:Anybody tell me please why Jones before moving up to heavyweight wasn't a great light-heavyweight. He fought and beat everybody except DM - Hill, Harding, Griffin, Johnson, McCallum, del Valle - whoever was there. And not one win was even close. And the fact that RJJ-DM didn't come about wasn't only Jones' fault (besides, I have little doubt about who would have won that fight).

Hill-just beaten by DM.
Griffin-great win but in the end he is 1-1 with Montell.
Johnson-fat middlweight, McCallum-40 years old...etc...

Still need to find an insult for Harding and del Valle....Axe wrote:Because DM was the only A-game fighter in that list, besides Hill and Griffin.pundit wrote:Anybody tell me please why Jones before moving up to heavyweight wasn't a great light-heavyweight. Besides - who exactly did Jones NOT fight at l-h but should (except DM)?

i still think that if jones stayed at super middle and defeated the likes of benn, mclleland, ottke, eubank, calzaghe, collins and maybe toney again if he could make the weight then threads like this questioning him wouldnt exist.
he had the talent and he had a division with quite a lot of depth in terms of quality to cement his legacy. his up and down the weights antics, his calling out of fighters that he was never going to fight like lennox lewis, money demands and choice of opponents later on in his career all cast doubt on him being classed as a true atg imo.
the fights were there, he just never took them.

No one! Jones fought and beat the ranked light heavyweight contenders that DM simply refused to face!
It's kind of comical how he tried to make the Griffin-Jones seem like Jones only got the better of Griffin once...Jones knocked his out twice, only Griffin was awarded a victory while on his back with his feet in the air during the first bout, but then Jones showed what a "flub" that really was by destroying Griffin!
But since the DM fan wanted to downplay a couple of the champions that Jones fought and beat, we might as well have a look at the stellar opposition that DM faced:
And this is the competition of DM's supposed "championship" years:
Leeonzer Barber
Nestor Hipolito Giovannini
Roberto Dominguez Perez
Paul Carlo
Everardo Armenta Jr
Philippe Michel
Asluddin Umarov
Christophe Girard
Graciano Rocchigiani
Christophe Girard
Virgil Hill
Nicky Piper
Darren Zenner
Andrea Magi
Mark Prince
Drake Thadzi
Muslim Biarslanov
Montell Griffin
Graciano Rocchigiani
Ka-Dy King
Alejandro Lakatus
Richard Hall
Joey DeGrandis
Richard Hall
Derrick Harmon
Julio Gonzalez
Fabrice Tiozzo
Some real gems in there....NOT! Hell, even die-hard, hardcore boxing fans have a hard time figuring out who 75% of his competition was, which is exactly why DM faced them...with the exception of Hill, none of the rest had much of a chance of even making a fight of it, yet DM still managed to lose to one of those guys!
Now what I want to hear is some more praise about the like of Leeonzer Barber, about what a vicious and dangerous fighter he was.
Or how about the Muslim Biarslanov's, Joey DeGrandis's, Darren Zenner's, but most of all, how about all of the opponents that Jones had already ruined, which DM then found the heart to face.
Enlighten us if you can DM fan about the great competition that DM faced compared to that what Jones faced!
