Now, whilst I'm sure boxingchat can correct me here, that's surely not a figure Calzaghe has hit too frequently. I don't know what he got for the Lacy fight, but wasn't the Veit rematch his highest purse prior to that? Something like 7, 8 hundred thousand, sterling?
Still not sure how FA are going to overcome the fact that Calzaghe is ITV's brightest star right now, and ITV aren't going to be keen to let him fight on another channel, but still..... it's big talk. Does Dennis Hobson bite, or is it all bark right now?

in terms of names it's pants.
kessler - who.
beyer -
danny green - couldn't even beat beyer
mundine - average
not much coming thru either.
Jackson Chanet
Carl Froch
Jurgen Brahmer
Lucian Bute
All lining up, waiting to lose their '0'.
Jurgen Brahmer could be a good fight for Joe - I think he could be the best of the up and commers (along with Dawson) and is becoming a big ticket seller in Germany, plus has the Hatton angle for the lay fans over here.
I think Brahmer/Kessler will probably be the two fighters holding the flag for the devision after Joe moved up/retired.

braehmer struggled in his last fight and has got lucky landing this eliminator.
plus he knocked out ricky hatton in the amateurs and that's a criminal offence where i come from.
dawson is going up to 175, i thought that was fairly common knowledge. another reason to move up in weight.
Brahmer is fighting well within himself, IMO. He might not have looked great, but looked a hell of a lot better than Froch has recently.
I only thought Dawson was moving up because of Lacy being a champion, not because he was particularly tight at the weight, now Lacy is no longer champ - perhaps Dawson will remain at Super Middleweight.
Another couple of guys who are undefeated SM's record wise look good are denis inkin and librado andrade - i have yet to see either fight but inkin on paper looks to be a dangerman but really needs to step it up. Andrade has beaten some decent guys and fights otis grant soon in a WBC elimnator so we could soon be seeing beyer-andrade. ps otis grant is lookin a shell these days.

Brahmer looked fairly ordinary against Thysse. Bute seems to be the bigger prospect.
But all these folks are fairly untested at the end of the day; in contrast to Kessler who is an accopmplished champ. For me he already holds the flag in the division; but since most people fell for Warren's Lacy stunt the majorities' flagholder is obviously JC. But the maojority would change its mind soon rapidly would Kessler get a chance to fight Calzaghe (which of course he won't).

If Kessler does get in with Calzaghe, I think Joe is in serious trouble. However, until that happens I consider Calzaghe #1 in the division eventhough he beat a limited Lacy. I really hope Joe doesn't go anywhere before Kessler gets him, even if Joe beats Beyer. I seriously think if he takes off to LHW without beating Kessler, he leaves a gigantic black mark on his legacy.

You see it this way, most don't, and anyway Warren won't take a fight where there is more than a 30 percent chance of JC losing.
At first I was going to report him to the NSPCC - The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Clinton - but I'll happily put my money where my mouth is.
Max it seems you have only seen the 2 or 3 last Kessler fights. Sure he controlled them in an iron grip using his jab, but he is sooo much more than a great jab. He has every punch and move in the book. Kessler is the complete fighter and only Calzaghe's unortodox style could be a probalem for Kessler, because I do think Calzaghe is a great fighter. Calzaghe has developed a style all of his own that is hard to deal with, but if anyone can in 168-175 divisions it is Kessler.
viciousmaussa wrote:Kessler's well rounded, not complete. He doesn't fight much on the inside. He's best when he's got the measure of a foe on the outside
Well, neither does Calzahge. Calzaghe prefers half-distance, and this is NOT were you want to be when fighting Kessler.
viciousmaussa wrote:Kessler's well rounded, not complete. He doesn't fight much on the inside. He's best when he's got the measure of a foe on the outside
Agreed, Kessler is good at everything, but not great at anything. The jab is his best weapon, but it's not enough to beat Joe at this point.

I disagree, and so do many others. Why don't Joe and Mikkel just square off such that we can find out?

And Joe is far from an inside fighter, he is at his best against opponents at a middle distance, who stand there and fight and don't create many problems with movement, and he can sit from a decent distance, but by no means fighting on the outside, and use his speed. Kessler has better movement than anyone he has fought so far, and evident from the Robin Reid fight, Joe struggles with people who can counter from the outside. I feel Joe would struggle mightily with Kess' jab, as it is one of the best in boxing today.

Calzaghe's very strong on the inside. But he's good at finding his range. Especially at closing the distance with those speedy combinations. To really threaten Calzaghe, I don't know if a left jab can be relied on, however good it is. It is NOT easy to jab a skilled southpaw. ..Calzaghe's weakness is that he's vulnerable to right hands, and he often circles right into the shot. The best right hand puncher around has got to be Paul Briggs or maybe Glen Johnson
