Hearing a lot of good stuff about Nery and seen quite a few predictions that he'll win. Haven't watched much of him myself though...

I've seen him a couple times, I don't see him being that close unless yamanaka slips significantly. We'll see, sometimes guys step up on the biggest stage. I'm excited it's on live. Not the same when you know the result. I also love fights with announcers that speak a different language.

Watched Nery's last couple of fights

I fancy Nery to take him if he can keep disciplined. He got floored trying to wipe an opponent out. If Yamanaka gets that chance Nery is done.

Yamanaka is a great champion but this may be his time.

Nery from what I have seen has fast hands, variety, power and crucially upper body movement.

That being said this is a seismic leap in quality for him. If he does the business we could be looking at a very special talent.

Seen lots of people pick Nery, who will need a career best performance...Yamanaka might get old over night...but I suspect the Mexican will be "exposed" as some one who has been bashing up Filipino Flyweights

I looked abit on youtube and I had the feeling Nery was indeed better, but I also expect Indigo to win, unlike everyone else.

I watched some of his fights and he does look good, though he seems a bit open and it's true that he's been facing undersized opponents pretty frequently. Interesting fight that I unfortunately wont be able to catch before knowing the result.

I have watched the vids if Nery proactively looking for good reasons to pick him, but all I have found is the same excuse; maybe Yamanaka has slipped.

Nery is a decent boxer. He is relatively tough. He has ok defense and footwork. He has his own querky twist on the shoulder roll. He has decent pop.

Imo, he is not fast enough. His punches are too wide and projected from too low. Nery is very open to straight shots. Yamanaka's length, power, high workrate and experience should win the day by stoppage mid rounds.

I've seen a few of Nery's fights on YouTube. I'm not sure what the hype is about. The guy has some leaky ass defense which isn't great against a puncher like Yamanaka. I think Yamanaka is going to knock him out. I think the only way Nery wins is if Yamanaka gets old overnight.

This is a war through two rounds. Nery is wide, but fast and unafraid. Might be the FOTY if this keeps up.

It was kind of strange.

Nery got to Yamanaka, at least a little bit, in every round. It looked like a case of younger, stronger, quicker and it would just be a matter of time.

BUT,
even though Nery was dominating the 4th, Yamanaka never went down, was throwing back, and never looked completely "out of it".
Then his corner jumped in the ring and stopped the fight.

I could see why his corner stopped it, Yamanaka was being battered all over the ring IMO. Took a lot of huge, huge shots in that last round.

He was firing back, but his (career-long) problem of staying upright & looking to end things with one left was gonna get him KO'd eventually in this one.

Great fight while it lasted though, I definitely thought Nery's knees buckled off a left at the end of the second & Yamanaka landed some brutal straight lefts to the body.

Great win by Nery!!

I do not agree that it was a FOTY candidate. Nery largely gave up the first three rounds, although he started coming on late three.

I also think that Yamanaka's corner stopped it early. He had 30 seconds or so to survive the round. While he was taking punishment he was throwing back and deserved a chance to make it through the round and decide for himself if he wanted to continue.

Nery showed the best defense that I have seen of him. That combined with his granite chin were the keys to the fight for Nery. But, Yamanaka has also slipped and he was open to Nery's southpaw wide left hook all night.

That is not to take away from Nery's victory. He displayed great patience, terrific footwork, explosiveness, and straighter punches than I have ever seen from him. Nery turned it up a notch for the higher level of competition.

I have to respect Team Yamanaka's decision to stop the fight but I disagree with it. Nery looked to be too young, strong, skilled and gifted than the 34 year old champion at the end, but without a legit KD in the last 30 seconds of the 4th I would have had it 39-37 Yamanaka going into the 5th.

It was a great fight for boxing enthusiasts and casuals alike but I did not see a FOTY candidate. I did see a beautiful job of boxing by the young lion dethroning the long in the tooth king.

Check it out on Youtube or in the Beast's lair, ASAP.

I will watch every Nery fight going forward. He has the makings of an elite boxer who is simultaneously exciting.

@Tanzio: I agree with everything apart from the "stopped it early" thing.

Yamanaka had taken about forty full-blooded bombs, couldn't defend himself properly & was reeling all over the place. Furthermore, he didn't complain, needed to be helped back to his corner & (most tellingly) didn't seem to know what was going on.

I genuinely thought he was so out of it in the corner afterwards that he simply could not tell why Nery was bouncing all over the ropes; at one point he's taking a drink & then he looks up at Nery climbing the ropes & he asks his cornerman something & you can see genuine surprise register on his face when the dude leans down & whispers in his ear.

I think if a guy's sustained enough damage to not know where he is/what's going on & his corner stop it, that's a good, justified stoppage. Wish more boxers' corners cared about their charges enough to do so.

Good win for Nery

Powerful, aggressive, open---he should be in some good ones. Reminds me a bit of Gervonta Davis....

That Japanese time zone thing gets me every damn time. There's a lot of these fights I'd love to watch Live, but I always thrown off by whether or not the fights are on at 7 AM, 6 AM, 5 AM or whatever...also it's kinda tricky to find the fights in Japan sometimes.

I'll look for this one on Youtube or something. I'm sure it'll be posted.
