It wasn't that great in the first two rounds either. Nice boxing by Nery while figuring Yamanaka out. Definitely my kind of excellent boxing match but I saw no evidence of a possible FOTY.
If Yamanaka could have survived the fourth and made a back and forth war of it then it could have I suppose, but that did not happen. Yamanaka clearly edged the first three rounds, imo. Nery figured him out and pounded him into submission in the fourth.
Great win, that I did not expect, for Nery. Love his style, gifts, skill, and toughness. He is formidable.
Hopefully Yamanaka retires.
Re: Yamanaka/Nery
Fair enough. I have no problem with it, and I certainly am not interested in a great champion like Yamanaka being seriously damaged at the end of his career.Datsue wrote:@Tanzio: I agree with everything apart from the "stopped it early" thing.
Yamanaka had taken about forty full-blooded bombs, couldn't defend himself properly & was reeling all over the place. Furthermore, he didn't complain, needed to be helped back to his corner & (most tellingly) didn't seem to know what was going on.
I genuinely thought he was so out of it in the corner afterwards that he simply could not tell why Nery was bouncing all over the ropes; at one point he's taking a drink & then he looks up at Nery climbing the ropes & he asks his cornerman something & you can see genuine surprise register on his face when the dude leans down & whispers in his ear.
I think if a guy's sustained enough damage to not know where he is/what's going on & his corner stop it, that's a good, justified stoppage. Wish more boxers' corners cared about their charges enough to do so.
At the moment I thought he might make it through the round. I did not watch much post fight at all. Nery was in control. I suppose that I was hoping that a great champion could turn it around for an epic win.
Another great case for consciously taking a knee at the right time like I believe that AJ had the ring sense to do when pole axed by Wlad.

Annnnd you disagreed with something I never said. Whatever, far be it for you to admit you read something wrong. Carry on, fight never appeared like it could be special.

I thought yamanaka's straight shots would beat Nery's wide ones. Yamanaka was straight up with his head on a tee for them, amazing he never went down. Nery reminds me of a much bigger punching Fortuna.

It wasn't an FOTY candidate and it never showed any evidence of possibly being an FOTY candidate. Clear enough for you, Professor Skidmark?

If only you could express yourself properly the first time you might avoid your profound similarities to Trump. A big time CEO bragging about all of his properties and businesses all over the world while digging in for his of so fulfilling internet battles where he gets to use classics like skidmark to try and get under a grown mans skin. Maybe if you get more upset I can get one of your ridiculously lame nicknames. Half the time nobody knows who the fornicate you're talking about.
Ramming Speed! Oh so clever, Mr. Trump.

Re: Yamanaka/Nery
i had yamanaka up 2-1.i dont think it went on long enough to be considered a FOTY contender but it had the makings of one just needed 3 or 4 more rounds.
that first round yamanaka was the one forcing it he was sticking the jab into nerys face and that straight left was still snappy.then into the second Nery has flipped it round and hes the one forcing it,Yamanaka now on the backfoot.3rd round Yamanaka turns it round again, theres a 5 second flurry from nery in that round but i think Yamanaks jab and the straight lefts were far better work for 2 and half minutes.
it was a good stoppage by the corner as Yamanaka was taking a hell of a lot of big shots, too brave for his own good when he shouldve taken a knee at least. Not sure what the score is with Yamanakas corner running in the ring to stop the fight...?I might be wrong here but isnt that a DQ?unless the ref waved it off first
the great camera work straight after the stoppage it never leaves Yamanakas face and you can almost read his thoughts as hes sat on his stool with the realisation slowly setting in of what just happened after defending his title 13 times with nery circling the ring on his coaches shoulders walking into shot.great drama!!!

Re: Yamanaka/Nery
Agreed, you could see it was going to break out. Nery got rid of him before it escalated to that level. Also thought it was good stoppage, he was fighting back while eating one flush shot after another. Nery couldn't miss him.LancashireLoyal wrote:i had yamanaka up 2-1.i dont think it went on long enough to be considered a FOTY contender but it had the makings of one just needed 3 or 4 more rounds.

Nery (age 22) is now the youngest fighter in boxrec's p4p top 10 by 3 years. We have found the future king.

Most people would have had Yamanaka around top 10 p4p at least top 20. Ring had him 9 or 10.
Nery just destroyed the unbeaten Lineal Champion and clear number 1 Bantamweight in their home country. There aren't 40 active fighters who have done that.
Re: Yamanaka/Nery
Yeah you're probably right. I don't expect his reign is gonna last long though. He's a wild fighter.Naandrew wrote:He has to be within p4p top 40 surely.gilgamesh wrote:He's not P4P Top 10. Re: Yamanaka/Nery
I think he can reign for a while. He is open and can be a bit crude, but he's also very strong and I imagine that he'd overwhelm most of the guys ranked by the WBC.
August rankings:
1 .- Luis Nery (Mexico)
2 .- Emmanuel Rodriguez (P. Rico) LATINO
3 .- Petch Sor Chitpattana (Thai)
4 .- Nordine Ouabaali (France) SILVER
5 .- Mark John Yap (Phil) OPBF
6 .- Karim Guerfi (France) EBU
7 .- Juan Carlos Payano (Dom. R.)
8 .- Lee Haskins (GB) * CBP/P
9 .- Rodrigo Guerrero (Mexico)
10 .- Arthur Villanueva (Phil)
11 .- Michael Dasmarinas (Phil)
12 .- Oscar Negrete (Colombia/US) NABF * CBP/P
13 .- Duke Micah (Ghana) COMM/INTL * CBP/P
14 .- Shohei Omori (Japan) * CBP/P
15 .- Mzuvukile Magwaca (South Africa) * CBP/P
I wouldn't say that any of the other champs at 118 are clearly better than him either.

Re: Yamanaka/Nery
What's interesting about this is Nery almost seemed to brag about his ability to put weight on.
Would be very interesting to see his ACTUAL weight on the night as a 15% increase is bloody huge! It might not seem like a major isue, but in a way cheating the scales, in a similar (but reverse I guess) manner to using a diuretic
http://www.asianboxing.info/asian-news/ ... -at-118lbsAs for Nery his comments to the media was about his ability to put weight back on and he's stated that he will put on around 18lbs between this morning's weigh in and fight time, essentially making him a Lightweight in the ring.
