Glove Size Discussion.....
Glove Size Discussion.....
Gents, its an ongoing thing thats been highlighted again by the Mayweather McGregor discussions but what is your opinion on glove sizes in boxing in general and also in comparison to MMA.
Personally I think too many people look at the size difference and dont focus just on the knuckle part of the glove. Everyone has the idea of boxing gloves being cushions, a lot of these people have never seen or felt a properly wrapped hand or had their hand in an 8oz fight glove.
The MMA gloves admittedly do look pretty intimidating due to how small they are but think a lot of people are under estimating how brutal a boxers hands are in 8oz or 10oz gloves.
(If possible we can try to avoid this turning into a Mayweather McGregor thread)

Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
There was a TV show with Bas Rutten comparing the impact of a punch with a bare fist, MMA glove and boxing glove.
The force from a bare fist was considerably higher but the MMA and boxing gloves recorded almost identical impact.
Surprising.

I think the glove sizes at the minute are pretty spot on, I boxed in 8oz gloves and I can tell you despite them looking nice and cushioned they were pretty dam solid when you got hit

Reyes were known as punchers gloves because much of the padding was in the wrist and hand part of the glove

Interesting. I guess because MMA gloves largely cover the knuckle, whereas in boxing gloves a lot of padding is on wrists, fingers, and hand area.leejonesjnr wrote:There was a TV show with Bas Rutten comparing the impact of a punch with a bare fist, MMA glove and boxing glove.

Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
In all fairness gloves do have an impact, in MMA the smallers gloves aren't "devastating" because the martial artists don't always specialise in boxing but you see even bang average stand up fighters getting finishes because of the smaller gloves.
Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
I dont think the knockdowns in MMA are 100% because of the smaller gloves. A lot of its surely to do with positioning when the shots land. Their feet are all over the place when shots land, sometimes one leg off the ground attempting a kick or knee etc. Also the follow up to a knock down when they are on the ground causes more stoppages than the initial knockdown punch.
I think the difference in gloves between the two sports is looked into too much.

agreed mate, you usually see after the KD the martial artists follows it up with hammer fists at which point the ref steps in.Emmseegee wrote:I dont think the knockdowns in MMA are 100% because of the smaller gloves. Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
The glove was actually introduced to protect the hands and not the opponents head!
Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
Yes as without them most fights would come to end due to broken hands or most work would be aimed towards the body.bripez wrote:The glove was actually introduced to protect the hands and not the opponents head!

Their boxing skills are generally pretty bad. Even Jon Jones looked very amateurish in his recent fight. He's got every other possible skill though from knees to kicks to jujitsu so no doubt he is a very formidable opponent in MMA. but look at McGregor opponents. Also leaped in with a left hook from distance vs a southpaw. Something you wouldn't see 15 year old amateur boxers do. Nate Diaz is dismal and McGregor went life and death.
Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
I think they should maybe shrink the gloves down a bit.

Do you have any examples of research into this or just opinion?kbackup408 wrote:In all fairness gloves do have an impact, in MMA the smallers gloves aren't "devastating" because the martial artists don't always specialise in boxing but you see even bang average stand up fighters getting finishes because of the smaller gloves.
Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
Theres a video knocking around comparing thr 2 types of glove and the MMA glove does marginally more damage than a boxing glove but not as great as you would think.

You ever seen 'Tyson and Jon Jones in street fight' on youtube? Just type it in.....
Only play fighting but you will see how a 50 year old Mike Tyson would deal with Jon Jones in a boxing fight.
He bobs and weaves, then slips him a body shot.... Jones throws a pretend uppercut, but Tyson has sold him a dummy already, his pretend 'body shot' is a disguise so Jones thinks about the body attack...
Tyson does the same body shot again but this time follows it up with a overhand right.... BINGO!
He doesn't throw it properly (obviously) but the oooohhh of the crowd know what shot would have been landed if he was committed to the shot.
A short clip to illustrate the difference in technique of a boxer to an MMA fighter
Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
Tyson was already thinking about the KO shot two shots earlier..... Just had to get Jones to buy into what he was doing.
Which he did.![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)
Which he did.

Re: Glove Size Discussion.....
Cool story , and if they had been doing anything other than just pretend stand up sparring it might of had some credence , in the real world Jones would not stand in front of Mike for 5 seconds ,typson might have a punchers chance but anyone with half a brain would know Jones would double leg him and have mike on his back and wrapped up before he knew it ....thats unless your one of them Wallies that thinks you can have a singular approach to fighting !?Kilsby wrote:^^TheLeprechaun wrote:Emmseegee wrote:I dont think the knockdowns in MMA are 100% because of the smaller gloves. Go and read the second paragraph of my post again - I mention nothing about a street fight or jones having him in a double leg (whatever that is)
I was pointing out the difference in skill set between the two sports.
Kinda in relevance to the so-called fight that's happening this weekend.

It sounds rigorously researched.
