Gervonta Davis vs Francisco Fonseca

Post by handsofstone »

Davis defends his IBF Super Featherweight title against the unbeaten but untested Fonseca on the Mayweather/McGregor card Saturday, pretty underwhelming opponent for Tank TBH, Ive never heard of Fonseca before, was just having a look at his record, he's unbeaten in 17/18 fights, drew his debut and has no noticeable names on his ledger, a points win over Edwin Tellez who I'm pretty sure was the guy Warrington stopped when he fought in Germany, Fonseca has never been passed 8 rounds and has 13 KOs on the slate

Davis looked the goods when he destroyed Walsh last time out, would've preferred to have seen him in with a better calibre of opponent but who knows Fonseca might be surprisingly good?

I don't think it's an awful opponent considering it was only announced a few weeks ago considering the fight is the weekend

They announced that Tank was on the undercard a lot longer than a few weeks ago though, as well as harping on about them lining up Salido or Roman Martinez as the opponent

I'm at the stage where I don't give a fukk about these nothing fights. Davis and Loma need to fight at SFW. Sooner the better.

This is simply a show case fight to fill out the undercard.
I wouldnt have expected anyone better or more expensive...

Yeah cause it's not like there's much money to go around on such a small scale show as this.

I'm sure Clev vs. Jack wasn't cheap to make...

His opponent was Roman Martinez but he pulled out as he wasn't ready.

Apparently Martinez wasn't even in training and was thus well overweight

Fukk mate! You're one of the better posters on here! That's what's wrong with our game nowadays man! That's the best fight in that division but the two of em would rather look hard for excuses rather than fight! To be fair to Loma I think he'd take the fight but there has to be two parties swinging! It's so annoying man!

Yeah this Fonseca is a much bigger draw though

Davis will be heavily protected for a long time I think. Shame as I think he is actually good.

He may as well just say he isn't ready he won't get crap for it. However contrary to that my belief (and probably most posters) is that if you have a belt then you are ready to fight anyone.

I can see Davis being protected for a time aswell

And it would be a breath of fresh Air if a fighter was honest and say he's not ready

You're probably right mate but he shouldn't be protected coz he's a top class talent! I rate Liam Walsh quite highly and always thought he was underrated! Davis coming over here and dealing with Walsh in the manner that he did shows that he's ready to be let off the leash! Davis v Loma is a natural fight but our sport will find a way to duck that one! It's a fuckin shame! We need these big fights to happen now more than ever after this weekends circus!

Davis 2 pounds over and loses his title on the scales. Is he showing serious discipline problems this early in his career? He was overweight on his first two tries last fight as well

He doesn't really seem that big for the division and I think his 5'6" listing may actually be generous.

Isn't this his first defence? Maybe Mayweather isn't the right promoter for Davis. Corrupted by money after only 1 title fight!?

600k purse and Floyd will get him a shot when he moves up, no incentive. Keeps him away from Lomachenko too.

Expect Hearn to get Stephen smith an IBF final eliminator in the next few months.

Those rankings are weak.

All he's done is follow the Press Conference tour around for weeks in the background.

Ellerbe the other day - announcing him as Floyds replacement etc. Maybe believing his own hype.

Pretty shitey ending to that, Fonseca didn't look like the type to bail, he was game and exposed some flaws in Davis but the shot was behind the back of the head, maybe it did hurt him?

Davis was sharp but a bit pedestrian

TBF to Davis it did look like the bodyshot that put Fonseca down when you see the replay

Pretty disappointing showing last night - surely Mayweather Gum must have top notch nutrionist for these guys.

I don't know at 5ft 5 and his size if Davis could go up another 1 or 2 weights that easily.

Saying he had a cold all week but didn't want to pull out the fight.

They were having trouble buying the ppv in America, all websites crashing because of all the casuals trying to buy it at the last minute, it was even announced on the American broadcast that the main event would be slightly delayed while they tried to sort this out, so maybe someone had a word with Gervonta and told him to prolong the fight, that may explain his behaviour in the middle rounds when he was acting like a tit, just a theory.
