Carlos Monzon vs Bob Foster what if?????

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

What if Monzon decided to step up and challenge him??/ what would have happened??

My prediction is Foster had one of the top 10 best jabs of all time and he even cut ali with it. Foster was a really tall guy with a long reach just like monzon, but foster also could hit. he had a vicious left hook like when he knocked out dick tiger. I think foster either owuld have outpointed monzon or knocked him out using the strength to his advantage. Monzon did have a veyr good chin though.

ShameUs you done did it again.

You'd have to favor Foster. He was a LHW but he fought heavies.

And Monzon....all he knew was one weight division. If he even tip toed out of that division for a moment, he'd be pickin' himself up, and dustin' himself off wonderin' what the hell just happened, in exactly two and a half nanoseconds.

Whereas, a fella like Greb.....knew the ins' and outs of the fine art of "multi divisional boxing" A very specific sort of martial art form, the secrets of which have only been shared with a select few. It was such a secretive discipline that Harry and his teachers agreed that it would never be filmed.

Seriously I would SLIGHTLY favor Foster. And though he could probably KO anyone his weight or lower, I'm not sure Monzon would cooperate.

A good idea of course, but I'm suspecting it's another case of "stolen intellectual property".

However..it's all good, as the owner has unlimited resources, and won't miss this one brilliant idea missing from his vast personal collection.

Two of boxings greatest over rated champions. Honestly I gotta favor Foster here . Monzon would not enjoy his usual height and reach advantage with Foster. Can you imagine Monzon walking Foster down and Bullying him? I can't . Foster wide UD or knockout .

Monzon seems to be well underated on these forums. I'd pick Foster I think but it's not a total walkover. Monzon was the greatest middle of his era and perhaps any era. Foster I'd say was prob a top 5/10 lt heavy but those stats don't immediately mean Foster wins.

The size difference isn't huge and anything can happen when two great champions step into the ring. As I say, I'd favour Foster but that doesn't mean to say in a h2h fight, Monzon should be counted out. He'd could well have won.

Carlos would feel an unusual situation 50 seconds into the first round. It would be because he is seperated from his senses courtesy of a monstrously left hook from Bob, probably would be the most potent one he ever threw.

Are "we" aware that Monzon and Galindez trained together on occasion? Do you know anything about how that all turned out? What the "norm" appeared to be when they shared a ring?

Might be worth finding out.

Great fight I would pick Foster by split dec Bob just edging Monzon after dropping him for a count in 15th and final round. :box:

Jake is known to blather incoherently and incessantly on boxing topics, and he was/is often subject to interpretation by those closest to him.

Very much like the character "Mumbles" from the Dick Tracy comics/movie.

I can tell you what I thought he was saying...but it would be conjecture at best.

He may not have known how to talk WELL, but he always knew what he was talking ABOUT.

Assuming it takes place at Light Heavyweight I'd have to favor Foster.

For some reason, in the 4 decades plus that I've been following boxing, I seem to remember a disproportionate number of fight fans who seemed to think that the guys moving up in weight were always at a big disadvantage, and yet they've been proven wrong on numerous occasions. There's really only 2 reasons for a fighter to go up in weight. Either he's outgrowing the weight division he's in, or he's looking for one big payday. In cases like Monzon and Hagler. PA Brown and others, my guess is they weren't confident enough of success at the next weight up.

And if I'm not mistaken....the HW and MW divisions HAD a slight fiscal advantage....not sure why...but the fan base was bigger than for the "jr" or "super" divisions. Equaling more Benjamins.

So a MW may not have had a great incentive to balance the risk in the case of LW division.

Historically speaking, the middleweight division probably has been more popular than the light heavyweight. Totally guessing here, but I'm guessing you could usually make more $ at middleweight.

Seamus is right about fighters moving up. Generally, it's not really that big of a deal. Countless guys have done it without a problem. It's actually natural. (Though it does seem to be easier in the lower weights. )

Fighters do move up when they can make more $ by doing so. If there is other fighters in weight class worth the $ to fight then of course you do that. Monzon had Benvenuti, and Griffith.
Hagler didn't really have any middleweights to make big $ against, but Duran, Hearns and Leonard moved up to challenge him. It would have been interesting if that didn't happen. Would Hagler have been content to stay at middle and keep fighting the Hamshos, Sibsons etc.. Or would he take the challenge and move up?
Of course Hagler and Monzon could had taken one shot at 175 anyway.

Having said that, I would pick Foster over Monzon. Would have loved to have seen it.
Yes, it is interesting how confident people are in the fantasy fights. :D

A very interesting fight. Too hard to tell. King Carlos had a hell of a chin. The great Bob Foster was a hell of a puncher. It would have been a very interesting fight to watch.

Foster is too tall, too long, too power, and is even faster. Does that tell you who I think wins?

An uninformed critic would say Foster was stopped a few times, sure at Heavyweight, but never by a middle weight.
