FYI - TCM Fight Film Mini-Marathon

Post by APerno »

On 09/04 starting at 8:00 PM TCM will be showing five classic fight films:

8:00 PM Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)
9:45 PM Fat City (1972)
11:30 PM Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)
1:45 AM Golden Boy (1939)
3:30 AM Harder They Fall, The (1956)

The only one I haven't seen yet: Golden Boy (1939)

TCM synopsis: A crooked promoter lures a young violinist to give up music for boxing. With Barbara Stanwyck, Adolphe Menjou, William Holden.

God that's one serious cliche; a crooked promoter and a violin.

It is based on a Clifford Odets play from 1937 but rewritten by 1939 Hollywood.

I am curious if Odets parodied any of the big three promoters, William Brady, Tex Rickard, or Mike Jacobs, (It might have been too early for him to have known Uncle Mike.) or will we get an ethnic stereotype?
